user reviews of Millstream, Hitchin

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Big pub with which, for many years, McMullens have tried to establish as a "food" "pub" and have consistantly failed to do either. The food is ok and we do eat there, and the beer is good but occassionally you get a wrong-un. Clients are rather uncolourful. Service can vary from excellent to dehydrating (waiting to be served). You know - it's ok but doesn't set the River Purwell on fire.

After reading some of the reviews posted ,I thought the best idea was to try it for ourselves. Had A great evening - The Guv'nor was friendly as were all the staff. The food was spot on . All of us had a really good evening. When you go there be sure to ask for the RHUBARB custard!
We will certainly visit The Millstream again.

i visited this put over the half term with my friends and family. it was a big group of us. The bar staff were very considerate and helpful. The food was amazing, defiantly worth the money. The comments some people have written about this place is awful. It is a well presented pub with great atmosphere. When i was here last week, John (the manager) and his wife were very polite and co-operative. Made sure everyone was okay with there meal and made sure that if we needed anything just to let them know. So every one who has slatted this pub for horrible bar staff and the managers wife being aggrsessive its a lie. Wonderful pub would recommend to people at work, friends and family. Defiantly worth the money spent! Good job guys!

I agree with some of the points that have been made. Although you do know what you are getting as it is a brewery pub. I think these type of pubs will go under as they are expensive and serve micro food. However the millstream is a nice big place and when they have functions it a nice atmosper. Except they do over load on charity events. As a Hitchoneon I have used the Millstream lots in the past and know a wide range of people that do. Most people say the same. Charity nights are a plenty (too a plenty) Quiz nights are ok although it could be done by someone else that currently does it, ( The Landlord is a really nice bloke that is always friendly. The landlords wife on the other hand put me personaly of going in there, She is loud and aggresive, I know for a sure this has put a lot of people off that use to go in. Also a new woman who works the Bar( may be a manager) is the most miserable barmaid ever lived So in a nutshell, expensive place but welcoming with the landlord there, food a bit iffy but ok to eat in a rush, Miserable barmaid/manager and an aggressive wife of the landlord who is extreamly loud.

To be honest, the 'Millstream' (the name change was a shame, they lost the 100 year history of the place with that) is the best pub in the area.

My only 2 pieces of advice would be firstly to drink before you go there - 15 for a bottle of cheap generic Rose in a semi-rural chain pub is an unjustified rip-off.

Second point before you go to the Millstream (after you have had a drink at home) is to have something to eat. The food is known locally as "freezer to microwave fare"

It is a shame, perhaps the landlord is tied to the brewery and has no choice in charging astronomical prices for cheap wine, and maybe he/she is also limited in the quality of the food menu. Possibly the brewery has a few things to answer for here?

On positive the actual pub is very nicely decorated and friendly. However not only are the drinks way over priced compared to other pubs in area but complaint is the food. Booked for their Burns Night costing 15 a ticket. Went last year and food was very nice, this year was a disgrace. The portion was small but worse the potato was not even real tasted like Smash! Complained to Landlord wife who admitted it wasnt fresh potato. Lady with me had meal with was first undercooked then got it again burnt. Had to wait approx 30 minutes between courses and gave up waiting for the whisky we all paid for. Lots of people were complaining so know not only one. This was rip off. Left place starving and got food from local take away on way home.

Had a fantasic day at the Millstream. The new menu food was lush, the service was second to none. They really treated us like royalty. The drinks are more expensive but well worth it for the great service and atmosphere. well done mac's. Thank you staff.
icebaby - 23 May 2008 23:39
Expensive, generic, lacking in atmosphere, shame really as it's in a great location
makinpost - 8 May 2008 11:30
steve you are so negative about the orange tree as per your review but you did not order any food and the millstream is a friendly pub but the food is so terrible as you stated (your words the menu is c....p and the chefs need more training) eg chicken is burnt Mcmullens spent 1m on a traing kitchen apparently and they cant get chicken right, i really rest my case trust me THE MILLSTEAM IS IN MEET OF A GOOD MANAGER AND BREWERY

I can not understand the comments made about this pub!!! I dont visit that oftern (ounce a week). This in my opinion is great, I have got to know a few of the staff and Im made very welcome everytime! I do eat in this pub, and ok the food does need improvment! Had a chicken salad and the chicken was burnt! But as for the atmosphere WOT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? Its a very big pub, but saying pub, its not the normal kind of pub! I was in on thursday I see the same saff as I always do, great service and make the time to talk to me! I dont know where the comments come from, but I think this place is good! Im glad this pub does not appeal to the young, drunk and scum that the other two pubs have. WELL DONE MILLSTREAM, WELL DONE MCMULENS FOR BEING BETTER AND DIFFERENT!
steve23 - 7 Apr 2008 12:50
This is a nicely decorated pub and it is clean and the staff are really quite nice but it lacks atmosphere in some indefinable way. IThe beer is very expensive and I have TWICE been sold crisps that are past thewir sell by date. I have also eaten there, which I do not recommend.

The Millstream is a food pub that delivers good quality food, good beer and very good service. as with all pubs there are bad days and the occasional problem but on the whole this pub delivers and is welcoming. give this place a try, these sights seem to me to be a forum for people with a grudge as the majority of the comments appear to be particularly vindictive and seems that most pubs get a bad review surley not every pub is that bad.
jazzyjay - 25 Feb 2008 00:44
My 1st and last visit to the Millstream I'm afraid.

I have to agree with the majority of the comments made about how poor this place is, and not the +ive ones that are probably from staff members!

Drinks are on a par with Central London prices - much higher than the local average, and the food is very expensive too. Alas, the food's quality is way below its pricing and is microwaved rubbish. I had a prawn starter - 6 for 5 watery, pre-frozen bits of seafood and some limp lettuce isn't good.

A big place deviod of anything going for it. I won't be going back.
Tazz1976 - 17 Feb 2008 13:52
I have looked at this site today and I must say that the comment below is sad, as this is not the pub that I visit. I was in the Millstream at Luchtime tuesday 12.02.08 and had a great time, the 3 staff that were working were great, 2 female's and one male working, so fully staffed. It was quite busy and I was served straight away. I did eat and the food that I had was great. Ok the food is typical of a beefeater type pub, but they dont pretend to be anything but a nice, clean pub. I will say that the pub does have a sence of coldness, due to the size of the place. I will say some more sofa's and some exciting foods on the menu, very english, even with the chcken tikka. I will say to the person who wrote the comment below, dont go to this pub, infact dont go to any pub, go to asda get a multi pack of lager, and sit in by yourself, pubs are just a place that you dont like so dont go in them!
steve23 - 13 Feb 2008 15:53
A really poor pub, both for drinking, service and terrible quality of the food.

As listed below the beer prices are 40p - 50p a pint more than anywhere else. I don't mind paying more if there's a reason for it - there isn't.

The food is atrocious. I was atrociuos before it cjanged management, and sadly it hasn't improved. I took some family members there recently and was embarassed when their food arrived - it was awful and had to be sent back as it was cold. My dish was inedible.

The place has no atmosphere and seems to be mostly avoided by locals. It could make a killing but is so badly run it won't.

Too expensive for the drivel they microwave, beer VERY expensive, no atmosphere, rubbish staff who seem to be children.

It says something when the (very rough and dirty) pub over the road from it always seems to be busy and this place is always empty.

Don't waste your time, andcertainly don't waste your cash on this place. You always leave disappointed.

Definitely the crappest pub in the area - and there are some bad ones for this to compete with, but it wins the award hands down.
pieeater443 - 15 Dec 2007 18:47
New management, same old rubbish.

Beer prices are more most London pubs - 3.10 for a Heineken is outrageous.

Food: awful. Before it changed hands I ordered lamb shank that came frozen. After the change I ordered ribs and they were again, frozen.

You really need to avoid this place. Devoid of atmosphere, very, very expensive and the food is microwaved crap. If they can't even warm the crap up they serve properly, then it's not a good start is it?

The only thing is has going for it is that it's never busy - but that's because it is the worst pub in the area.
fatherpierre - 15 Dec 2007 18:32
To all, The Millstream has changed. This pub has a great feel to it. The food that I have had over the past few weeks has been great. The pub has been busy and you get a real feeling of relaxation, this was helped wth 3 real log fires lit. This pub has changed and I realy enjoy it there. There are new managers in the pub now, and the manners of the staff has changed. To be honnest there are not many , if any of the old staff there. I think this will become my local, however I dont live local. (haha)
steve23 - 19 Nov 2007 23:15
food expensive, service crap, won't go there again, people were drumming their fingers waiting for the food and when it came it was just uttery rubbish
anonymous - 19 Jul 2006 21:17
Typical family pub - like a Beefeater or Hungry Horse. Large, pleasant, relaxed and tidy. Fittings and layout have come from the standard pub mould so the place does lack distinguishing character, but it's clean, comfortable and inoffensive. McMullens are one of the better regional breweries, but are sadly under-appreciated. The beer here has always been of very good quality. The food is typical good value pub grub.
SilkTork - 15 Mar 2006 18:16
it's nice, lovely furnishings but expensive
katykit - 9 Feb 2006 12:40
A good pub to go to for a quiet drink or food, especially in the summer when you can sit outside. Oh and the fittest barmaid ever used to work there (hey Amy). Food is a little expensive though!
Jamesy77 - 21 Jan 2006 18:36
Agree with sopiett. Very little staff on.

Was also suprised at the "new" booking scenario. How Odd!

Food was lovely.
crusade - 24 Oct 2005 15:44
Hopelessly understaffed on a recent Sunday lunchtime visit - even though the pub was only half full I and four or five other people still had to wait ages to get served at the bar.

And rather strangely we were told that groups of over four people who wanted to eat had to book even though there were plenty of empty tables and a full menu available - we (a group of 10)got around this by giving three separate orders which seemed to be ok.?

Food (sunday roast) was good if a little expensive, atmosphere standard large pub quiet so good for talking
sophiett - 5 Oct 2005 14:26
A miserable, soulless place in one of Hitchin's few pleasant settings (ex-resident speaking) - but the McMullens AK was decent if expensive
mtaylor40 - 21 Sep 2005 20:52
last comment is a little mean, but I know where you are coming from.
ellenpage - 6 May 2005 11:51
A bit like Butlins, but without the Redcoats.
SCE - 1 May 2005 20:53
Typical McMullen pub, poor choice of beer, average food (although well presented). Just been done out, so I guess that's why the food is so expensive.
drummond5 - 20 Apr 2005 11:41
Just been to this pub for lunch today. I heard it had been done out. It looks really nice but the place was empty with absolutely no atmosphere. This place used to be packed of a lunch time, I really don't understand. I had fish and chips. It was ok but dripping in grease. I must say I was rather dissapointed.
