My wife and I called in here for lunch after a walk today. It was very busy (obvoiously popular, this was Monday lunchtime), but, in spite of that, service was friendly and fast. I was impressed at how well they were dealing with the rush. The beer was well kept and the food was good. Like other, I cannot understand the low rating – it has 5 stars on Google, which seems nearer the mark.

This is one of my favorite pubs. It's run with wit & charm. The food is really excellent and value for money is ok. The interior is clean & cosy and the garden (with cricket pitch over the road opposite) is very pleasent on a sunny afternoon. The area is vey rural and there are some great dogwalks to be had before going to The Hit or Miss for a decent pint and roast dinner. If this place is a 5 then the pub industry's had it. 8 for me.

Accent mainly on food but it is more pubby than some of its ilk. The food is a little expensive but then it isn't standard pub grub and is usually well cooked. Likewise the Hall & Woodhouse beer isn't everybody's favourite but is usually well kept. Whatever way you look at it, deserves more than 5.

My husband and I had our wedding reception in this pub 4 years ago. We had about 25 guests, was in a very pleasant room on our own & the staff were great. The three course meal was really nice with no lengthy waits in between courses. We thought it was a really nice venue, good food and very reasonable. Highly recommend it.

Good all round pub, real ales are well kept, food OK but expensive. Very surprised at its low rating.

Nice pub in general, pleasant staff, though not enough of them. Service for food was painfully slow, but due to being understaffed. Food was average to good, but not amazing. However the location is very pleasant and has nice rural surroundings

I have been to this pub on a number of occasions for a drink, but ate for the first time here recently. Food was nice, but I felt a little overpriced for what it was. However, despite this I did leave happy as I have never been disappointed with the Ale on offer!!

'OutofTouch' is not as 'out of touch' as his name implies. He's spot on..! I've been an occasional visitor here for 20+ yrs, seen a good number of ownership changes, and his review pretty much applies throughout. Popped in for a couple last nite and enjoyed well-kept pints of Badger & Sussex. Welcome fire on a cold nite too..! Staff fine, as usual. Long time since I've eaten here.. same reason, not value for money. To summarize.. nice old-style pub for a couple of pints on a winter's eve or a summer's day.

Just went here for Easter Monday Lunch yesterday. The main (old) part of the pub looked very nice with low beamed ceilings and open fires but unfortunately we were seated in the side extension which was pretty characterless in comparison.
The food was good but overpriced in my opinion (and I live in central London). 3 adults and one child with only 3x two courses and one kids meal, one pint, one glass of wine and a handful of soft drinks came to 100!
Service was OK but a bit slow (they did apologise). I'd happily go back for a pint or two in the Summer but I won't be eating there again. As the names suggests, it's a bit hit or miss.

Overpriced restaurant that serves beer as a distraction to their largely fish based menu

Lovely staff, very welcoming. Brilliant food, excellent service and a relaxed atmosphere.

staff very unfriendly, food way below standard. Had an unexpected visit to the doctors after visiting here!

Great mix of beer, excellent food and welcoming staff staff - recently voted Chiltern District PUB of the Year in 2004. Set in a small chilterns village it is a marvellous example of how a pub can thrive by concentrating on its customers!
