George Stephenson Inn, Newcastleback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
This pub was probably the worst of the day for me. On entering, I was ignored for a few minutes, until a regular walked in and I was finally acknowledged. Ales were Moles Six FIngers, Theakstons Locomotive Brew & Rocket Ale & Everards Ascalon. A number of other handpulls showed beers that were "coming soon". The Rocket Ale I had was the worst drink of the day and clearly on the turn. I'd have taken it back if I hadn't had a bus to catch. I later found out that CAMRA discounts are available. But there are no signs to promote this and it is not offered. Situated next to a railway bridge carrying the East Coast main line. Seemed popular. So maybe I was just unlucky.

just thought i would update people about the changes as the last review was right it went up for sale a month later in november, now it is under new management again the owner also owns the trent pub in town, the manager is friendly and the the atmosphere is what it use to be years ago, there are bands back on a friday and saturday and sometimes on a sunday afternoon. they also so have loads of sports on, plus the car park is back and the farm at the back gone its a pleasure to drink in there now

Well I suppose all good things come to an end. Went in Sunday no real ale, went in tonight, Wed, still no real ale, the pumps had not been touched ie still in the same skewed positions. I asked the lass behing the bar but she did not know, the place has really gone down the pan. It used to be a great music and real ale venue but that finished in the early summer now they seem to have given up on real ale. Still they do have food, jolly dee, nothing special just the usual pub fare, nothing like the Brandling at South Gosforth or the Hungrey Horse on Newton road, I would'ent go specially to the George for the food as it just seems the usual. This used to be a brilliant pub but now just another mediocre boozer with no atmosphere and a few die hards hanging about. Come on new management whoever you are, we want our pub back. Otherwise you are heading for another 'For Sale' notice outside the pub around Feb 2011 I would estimate.

The new management has been in for nearly a year now and it is much improved.
Food is now on the menu and it is really good.
The beer is also good with about 4 ales on at any time.
Give it another try folks!

In fairness, the pub went through a rough patch after the last manager left. Jan, the new one, takes getting used to as she seems a bit abraisive at first.
Get to know her and she is a generous host and the beer is always well kept and the real ales keep changing.
I cannot comment on the music though as I don't come in on those nights!
Give it a try again, it is worth the effort.

Even if the reviewer has issues with the Operator it doesn't negate their comments. I happen to know that nothing_better_to_say had an involvement in the other well known music venue and had an attitude almost as bad as the Landlady/manageress that 'they happens to know'. The fact that she used to work at the other place and left after complaints had been made about her attitude (coincidence maybe)seems to have been forgotten. Now I hear she has left the George Stephenson as well, another coincidence, who knows? The operator, by the way has managed to run the place further into the ground than nothing_better_to_say managed to do.

Blimey, what a coincidence two very negative reviews in such a short space of time especially when the GSI has been operating for quite some time and is very busy boozer and music venue. Wouldn't be anything to do with the fact that the second reviewer has 'issues' with the operator? I happen to know the Landlady/Manageress in question and think very highly of her, she does a sterling job especially more recently as her boss has taken on the operation of another well known music venue in the borough - coincidently the second reviewer has left very negative comments about that pub too........

I totally agree with Kitchen - that woman is vile. Mouth like a sewer and an attitude problem the size of the national debt. The whole place could do with cleaning up, in all respects

Rude landlady. Warm beer most of which had run out. I almost ran out myself.
