Another decent old school, old man's boozer (many of whom were spread along the bar). Decent pint again (at £2.70 a pint) directly opposite the Crown. Seems to be a bit of rivalry with the Crown as the locals were pouring scorn on their big coup of getting Bernie Clifton to judge the town's mince pie contest in the Crown.

Will be hosting a joint beer festival with the Fighting Cock's over the May Bank Holiday weekend. If it is as good as the last one it will be well worth attending
Introducing hot food on a Monday night complement the Wednesday night curry. Expect burgers, ribs etc. Beer quality is still excellent.
WOW!!, attended the opening day of the Winter Beer festival yesterday, I can honestly say that this was the most impresive gathering of new beers/ breweries ever in Oakengates. All beers were in great condition, pub was busy all afternoon with people attending from far and wide to sample the impresive display of ales.
Oakengates free houses definitely prefer quantity over quality. Another place with only (!) seven on, but the Pictish Pale'N'Oppy was the best pint I've had for a while. What must be some of the biggest pork pies in the world were on sale and the whole place had a gloriously retro run-down feel. If the owner is retiring maybe he's letting the place go a bit which would be a pity because with a few licks of paint this could be one of the great pubs of the country.
Will be jointly hosting a Winter Beer festival at the end of November, to feature 60 real ales, all on handpump.
Pub currently on the market as the landlord is retiring..hope whoever takes it on is as good at choosing and keeping the beer.
Visited after a very brief stop at the Crown non-beer festival over the road. Pub is still doing the business beer wise, excellent quality and range.
Now then....this is more like it...spent an afternoon here catching the annual May Day Bank Holiday Beer Festival..great stuff..no make weights like Northumberland or Cottage..just a great selection of Yorkshire beer served in excellent condition..nuff said...go if you have the chance
Visited during the Crown Festival last weekend. Three of the six guest ales were interesting. Pub is holding a blind tasting of Milds in order to find a replacement for the now defunct Ansells Mild that it had been selling. Taunting Board had plenty of interesting ales for the future, some probably available this weekend during the second half of the Crown Fest double weekend.
As a lover of belgian and german beer I was disappointed that they didn't sell it considering it was advertised all over the outside. Nothing wrong wiht the ale though
Called in on Jan 15th 2011, and fell in love with the place ... Beer quality was top form, as was the friendly barmaid. 'Soaked' the Beer up with one of their very tasty cheese and Spanish onion baps !
Noticed they have several Pictish Beers coming on soon, and I hear that they also hold a Pictish Beer Festival ... I'll be back, I love Pictish Beers ! !!!
Cheers to all at the 'Station Hotel'.

best beer pub in oakengates better than the vinegar factory across the road real characters and banter in the bar in front of a roaring fire in winter good selection of real ales of varying abvs pictish flies out of the pumps if you need any advice ask one of the pictish twinning commitee in the fighting cocks you can take your own food but on a wed night try one of phils curries and pint great value at 4.50 if you like the music across the road come and get your beer here and take it with you but dont get caught lol

Never had a bad beer in here. Nice and relaxed atmosphere too.
rpadam, the station refered to in the title is a second one, that used to be at the top of the street and served a different line to the one that still exists.

Slightly confusingly, this is not the nearest pub to the station (but that is only a few minutes walk away). With other pubs almost next door on each side, plus another opposite, this basic-looking establishment has some stiff competition (which is probably the reason for it being rather quieter than I was expecting). Inside, it is slightly larger than I first thought with a side room in addition to the main seating areas either side of bar. There are also a couple of small tables outside in an alleyway, but I think you'll need a smoke quite badly to consider sitting out there. Nothing to write home about decor-wise, but it does offer a very good range of beers from eight handpumps (mostly from small producers), and my pint of Houblon IPA from Summer Wine Brewery (2.40) was excellent.

Back in the GBG for 2011 where it should be!

Having banished the "History of Oakengates" display to the pool room during the redecoration of the rear two rooms, why oh why did Phil not do something about the gent's loo's, they really are now the low point of the pub. Dirty, cramped and smelly, Get a grip man and sort it out!

Superb range on over the Christmas and New year period. Beers where flying out of the pumps, counted well over 20 different beers on during the Christmas and New Year. All beers where in great condition, tasty and from micro breweries!

Really back on form. Knocked spots off the Crown during the Crown's last beer festival. Station annual festival this weekend has had a good selection of Yorkshire and Lancashire ales, all in tip-top condition

Pub appears to receiving a gradual refurb inside. Bar area at the front and TV lounge towards the back. Also noticed a games room. Good selection of beers , friendly service.
The Station Inn continues to outshine its neighbour across the road with better beer choice and quality, and a pleasant welcome without the self-congratulatory trappings. On offer was excellent Shropshire Gold, Holden's Mild and the entire range of brews from the Pictish Brewery, Rochdale. Imaginative choices of ales, all above 4%, aswell as a choice of Dutch Jenevers and BOGOF coffees for the ladies. Give it a go.
Salopian gold 195 a pint , holdens mild the other permanent real ale 7 guests [ 6 pictish 1 titanic ] a proper no frills boozer , locals friendly and staff knowledgable , the Crown gets most of the plaudits in oakengates [ good pub it is ] but this is better .
The best pub in oakengates ? Probally
A good variety of very well kept ales. The Gravitas was excellent. A great place to spend a quiet afternoon's drinking.
Great range of beers (8 handpulls) and the 2 I had, Brown Cow Benedicts Pale and Vale Gravitas were both in excellent condition. Very friendly place with lots of banter going on between the locals. I like this place. I'll be back soon.
i have heard this is no longer a cask marque pub ????? does any one have any more info
On the up again, has regained trade from the Alex and increased turn-over of real ales.

has lost a lot of customers to the Alex. Guest ale turnover can be slow

Called in while waiting for the Crown to open, and found this a lovely no smoking venue with 6 beers on. Great choice of breweries, and I enjoyed my beer in the friendly atmosphere.
Some superb beers on, friendly locals, and great to see non smoking.
Stu, the Station Hotel closes between 4 and 7 on a Sunday. You are unlikely to find many milds on at this venue the landlords guest beer policy is to only stock guest beers of 4% ABV or above. He does regularly stock Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild. The pub also often stocks Stouts and Porters

Had hoped to see a selection of MILDS in Oakengates during festival weekend, but didn't make it. Made it today though a week late I know but was even more disappointed to find the Station closed. But never mind the Crown across the road was open where I was served an excellent pint of Hobsons MILD.

Cracking Yorkshire Beer festival was held here over the may bank Holiday Weekend

Big changes are planned here.
Lots more handpumps are planned serving a great range of top quality ales to an appreciative audience.
This pub goes from strength to strength. Best range of beers in Telford if not Shropshire.
anonymous - 18 Mar 2006 22:26 |
Best beer range in Telford. Six guest ales on most days of the week. Often new and unusual beers, all served at peak perfection, a definite candidate for pub of the year!
anonymous - 8 Mar 2006 14:51 |
There have been a few changes and improvements at the Station. 1) Erdinger draught German wheat beers have been introduced 2) Enville bitter has been replaced by Holdens Golden Glow due to poor beer quality from the brewery. 3) 6 Guest ales on at all times during the week. 4) A new "Wenlock" stove has been installed in the bar.
That unusual selection of guest beers isn't limited to Thursdays by the way - they're on all week. You have Enville Ale, Fuller's London Pride and Salopian Shropshire Gold as permanent fixtures, then up to 5 guest beers to choose from of which one is usually a mild/stout/porter, all of which are generally in excellent condition. I don't get in there as often as I'd like, but it's always worth a visit.
Phil the landlord puts a selection of unusual guest beers on, on a Thursday. Good selection of continental beers. The next Beer festival will be held over the Whit bank holiday weekend (North Yorkshire beers) Annual Belgian beer festival held over the August bank holiday weekend.
