Crooked Billet, Iver Heathback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
We swung by this Pub today after a good session at the local Go Ape black park, and thought it looked OK for a late Lunch and a few beers.
After having to find and clear own own table, which did seem a bit odd, we hit the bar for a drink. The highlights were:
- 2 Pints of Guiness had to be returned because the "Keg was bad". The fact that they topped up the already half poured pints from the bad keg with the new one for another customer showed how much they cared.
- Being told that the substituted wine they selected for you was "Effectively the same", when one was white, and the other a Rose.
Unfortunately, we didnt cut our losses and leave, we stayed for a meal.
This is what we were served after an hour wait:
- Chicago Chicken - An absolutely annihilated breast of chicken in some form of herby ketchup. It was supposed to come with Bacon, but that never made the plate. It must have been with the Salad, because that too never showed.
- A medium-rare steak - It came out extremely well done with some vegetables that seemed like they had been under the heat lamps all week, it was promptly returned to the Kitchen. After 20 minutes waiting for another one, the order was cancelled. One of the fine waitresses came over when we were finalising the bill , wanting to know "Wot was wong wif the stake?", and grudgingly removed it from our bill.
- The sweet potato chips - Sounded delicious , maybe could have been if they ever turned up.
- The Teriyaki steak with Prawns - The only person in our party who had this, said "it wasnt that bad" , he's now at home with food poisoning like symptoms.
I've had some bad pub food in my time, but this, hands down is the worst.
Avoid at all costs.

Went there last night (Thursday) at around 8.15. Greeted and shown a table. Waitress comes and takes drinks order. Quickly back with the drinks. Then tells us quite a few things are off the menu. Ordered Cod and chips. No cod I'm afraid. Ok then, a couple of steak burgers. Comes back 3 minutes later to say there are no steak burgers. Or chicken. Or pheasant (rather bizarrely). Apparently the delivery had only come at 6.00pm and it was still frozen. Nothing like freshly produced and cooked food!!
At this point we said we'd leave it then and go elsewhere, we didn't fancy a microwaved lasagne. Obviously had to leave the 3 diet cokes pretty much un touched but we were still relieved of 6 for them. Might it not have been a good idea to tell us there was no food before taking our drinks order?
Ended up in the Black Horse pub down the road where we had a lovely meal.
We went into the Crooked Billet because it had just been refurbished. Don't be tempted. There are far better places to eat locally.

went here at 9.45pm with my wife and was told that they wern't serving any more. I asked why and was told that it isnt busy enough and staying open wont pay their wages. completely shocked by their attitude and will deffo not be going back there in a hurry.

Had a pleasant meal with friends on Friday 11 December and although the place was very busy the service was friendly and generally efficient. Food is up to the usual standards of the Beefeater chain, but beer lovers will be disappointed with the range of beers available (I saw no hand pump beers).
I would recommend this place for a meal, but it is not the sort of establishment to drop in for a quiet drink.

Went here for a night out on the Monday with some friends. Was very disapointed with the service, the woman that was serving us would ask whether we wanted a drink, one of would say what twe wanted and the next minute she was gone without waiting to hear what the rest of us wanted. Though she would have forgotton what we had ordered when she next came back to take our orders for the food. I thought they had pads to write down what you order so that they didn't forget though clearly it seemed these didn't make a bit of difference whatsoever. The food was disgusting, seemed like it had just been cooked in the microwave and was ver very slimy, some of it didn't even seem like it had been cooked. The only thing that was good aout it was the pudding but that still isn't going to convince me to go back there again.

Loved the place as an 'Out and Out' - a restaurant menu that was slightly different and child friendly with helpul staff.
Now..... well it's just another Beefeater!

crap food and expensive drinks

Had to make do with this pub, as two others I tried (Black Horse and Whip and Collar) don't serve food on a Saturday ! (What's all that about ???) Anyway, the Crooked Billet. On entering the place with children, first impressions were OH NO ! Full of louts and definately NOT a family place. It was smokey and very noisy. However, we were hungry and as previously stated, pub food was thin on the ground. When we did discover the restaurant section, it was much more appealing. Staff were great (our waitress, though foreign, spoke very good English and made a fuss of the kids) Food, though on the expensive side, and not big portions, was very well presented, and cooked perfectly. Also, it only took 10 minutes from ordering to being on the table. If you do go there, don't let first impressions put you off, as the restaurant area is much more relaxed than the bar area. Anyway, if it's Saturday, you don't have much choice....

The Crooked Billet is incredably smokey, especially given that the restaurant is apparently smoke-free.
The new hardwood floor and painted walls makes this pub incredably noisy, even when few patrons are present.
There is a large beer garden (read beer field!).
