This is NOT a very small pub at all. All the real ales are £1.99 a pint except for Ruddles which is £1.89. I had a loverly couple of pints of Ringwoods 49er on Saturday morning. Fair crowd in for breakfast.

Had a few pints of good beer in here yesterday.Normal selection of beers that most spoons serve.Very busy.
Wetherspoons branch in the middle of Southampton with a reasonable selection of beers, but the normally bland interior. Not a million miles away from Central station or St Mary's football ground either. Beers on last night were Shepherd Neame Bishops Finger, Batemans XXXB, Salisbury Somer, Greene King Ruddles Best & Abbot, Caledonian Auld Lang Syne & Ringwood Forty Niner. Cider was Old Rosie. There aren't many decent pubs in the centre of Southampton. For that reason, this place is worth a visit. But if you're prepared to venture a little further afield, you could give it a miss.

Typical Wetherspoon layout and appearance. Good range of seating, and everything in reasonable to good state of repair. Toilets very clean. Visited during the day, half term, and the place was very popular with families. Bar staff friendly and helpful. Food served quickly, and in decent condition.
This place scored well because (a) it was halfway between the football ground and the station (b) we got served pretty quickly (c) the Titanic Iceberg was in good nick. Apart from that it was heaving with younger customers drinking all sorts of weird looking things but as I said we got a beer before the short walk to the station and the train home.

Generic Weatherspoons. You know what to expect - it's the same as the one you went to in Cardiff, York, Glasgow etc....zzzzzzzzzz
Above average Spoons, although the one in the town centre is even better. Cheaper prices although it is in a fairly decent area
As good a Wetherspoons as I've found. There are some real dives not far from here, yet this place remains rather pleasant. (I saw them refuse to serve a guy who was singing loudly and trying to jump the queue. Full marks to them. That's what keeps this pub decent.) The large number of staff work efficiently and cope well with big crowds. Food, as so often in Wetherspoons, is cheaply priced for quite large portions; don't know how they do it. Loads of real ales on; the Deuchars IPA was very potable and under 2 a pint!!
Popped in for a couple of pre-match pints on Saturday. Few of the ales were off, and the offering from the Alton brewery ran out as I got to the bar, but was still able to enjoy Old Thumper for just over two quid a pint. Four bar staff doing a decent job despite the queues being four-deep at the bar. Seemed pleasant enough inside, although most of us were squeezed into the small area outside on the pavement.
One of the better Netherspoons. There were about 8 ales on, the usual ones and some decent local beers from Ringwood. Usual Netherspoons' dcor and fayre.
Better than average Wetherspoons that came to our rescue when other pubs were not yet open. On handpump excluding Wetherspoons usual fair local Ringwood Forty Niner & Old Thumper and Oakleaf Hole Hearted. Hydes Golden Hyde and GK's disguised Bonkers Conkers were also available. Large seating dining areas away from the bar. The pub I understand was converted from an old furniture shop.
Pretty good. Service early in the morning was superb and the breakfast was served quickly and was pretty good quality.
Came back a bit later for a drink and loved the rooftop terrace, although glad we were not back for eating, seemed to be a lengthy delay and seemed to be the odd complaint from those sat nearby, that said the staff all seemed to deal with the issues well.

Went in here for a pre-match pint on Saturday. The pub was full of football fans and other customers and yet they only had three (occasionally four)bar staff on. V-e-r-y s-l-o-w service. Our patience was rewarded by some fine ales in good condition.

Multiple visits have led me to soften my attitude to this place. Although the service is embarrasingly variable (This lunchtime my mate was asked if he wanted ice with his Peroni, and there are rarely more than two staff on even at the peak times) they do keep half decent ales. Today, as part of the ale festival I quaffed a pint each of Everards Equinox and Brakspears Oxford Gold. The former was in much better condition than the latter. Pedigree and Courage were still on though, to my disappointment. The decor is quite nice but this pub attracts its fair share of scrotes in my experience.
For a Spoons its not bad. Staff were always friendly and quite a decent crowd in there during the week. Would avoid on a saturday night though, the local living dead come alive and make it unbearable. Made the mistake of eating there once, never again!
very hit and miss, had some amazing ales in there before, recently some shockers and clearly the staff don't have a clue how to actually poor a pint or look after the beer properly. Food waiting time can sometimes be a long time
Standard Wetherspoons. Ringwood beers plus Pedigree, Abbot and some more Itchen Valley/Hampshire Brewery beers.
Old Thumper was nice enough tonight.
Good service, good food, good drinks offers. I love this Wetherspoons! Very popular with students but a great place to hang out. Is nice in the summer to sit on the roof and watch the world go by.

9am walk to uni: Bring out your dead.
I've always found the service very good in this pub. Like most Wetherspoons is better during the day as gets incredibly busy in the evenings between Wednesday and Sunday.
Nice Little number courteousy of JDW, Very nice beer, Very nice bar maid too! 8/10
One of my locals from my student days. In hindsight, it was probably rubbish, but it was cheap and we had some corking afternoons and evenings in there. Love it!
Floor as sticky as that of an abu graib interrogation cell. Bar staff breathtakingly rude. Not an experience I would like to repeat.
Well. I went there last Friday night and you had to wait about 15 minutes to get served at the bar. I would never visit this place at night again.

Nice pub 4 sitting outside in summer 2 have a cold lunchtime drink, i havent been in the evening but with no music wouldnt wan 2 either
Wethers are always for people with are too tight to buy pints over 2.00. Not bad for a Wethers though. Went there early on Saturday afternoon. Don't know what it's like in the evening.
Wetherspoon's pubs are not for me. They don't play music plus this one is no exception for being filthy.
In does what it says on the tin. Wetherspoons are usually a love and hate thing. Cheap drink, food, no music. Gets absoulutely packed most nights during the week.
In Southampton for the beer festival and found this place during afternoon break. After the other local JDW this was a relief. Looked the newer of the two and better for it. Guest ales on and beer/food OK. Toilets looked like they were regularly checked as well. Much better.
I'd say this is in the lower quartile of Wetherspoons' offerings.
It's a good place to go if it starts raining really hard when you are nearby. I can't think of another reason to go there.
Food and beer same as all Wetherspoons.
SO cheap, go there early to get battered quickly. Staff are lovely and like to pull each other a lot! Ignore the old men and chavs and you''ll be fine.

This pub is a great pre-match venue but you can't get in a football shirt after the match. You can't beat the price of the drinks and pre-match banter can be lively.
I hate weatherspoon pubs, cheap and tacky and that also goes for the people in it.

Cheap beer, friendly staff been going here for years and had loads of good times here. Occaisonally "losers and chavs" but generally stopped by doormen. good place!
Terry - 21 Sep 2004 14:39 |
Cheap and nasty, Chavs and losers.
Steve - 16 May 2004 15:55 |
Only go here if everywhere else is shut or you are skint. No atmosphere, no music and no fun
Chris - 9 Apr 2004 18:31 |
Agree with the comment about arsey doormen - annoyed they IDed me and not the 12 year old pikeys inside! Reasonable food - i've had better in the Wetherspoons at home. Good looking friendly young men behind the bar until their miserable boss told them off for flirting! Lacks atmosphere - typical Wetherspoons
Sky - 3 Mar 2004 22:33 |
Typical Wetherspoons pub, because the beer is so cheap it really does attract the absolute dregs of society with Lacoste Jumpers and jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos. Absolutely dreadful. Steer clear.
Bob - 22 Oct 2003 13:11 |
Beer quality hit and miss. Sometimes has interesting guest ales. Can take ages to get served. Popular with the younger crowd.
Alan - 24 Sep 2003 11:38 |
Funny, I didn't realise it was a Wetherspoons, but in retrospect, of course it is: plastic yet functional, with open spaces for the burberry capped pikeys to swing their tartbashers about.
My one memory of the Giddy Bridge was hearing a girly sqeak followed by the oh-so-familiar thudding of a body thundering down the stairs, which deftly silenced the Saturday afternoon pub. One of our party ran over there as soon as a member of staff shouted out for a doctor. We were appauled. She was just a nurse.
Typical Wetherspoons fayre, really busy Friday and Saturday with arsy doormen and barstaff.
Very good Pub Cheap and very atmospheric
