please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

In here three weeks ago. had an hour waiting for my train. Beers were good and a nice selection of a few that I had not tasted before . Managed two before my train. Staff were efficient and friendly for a station pub. Normally I would not comment on a previous reviewer but I have noticed on this forum that there is a significant bias against Spoons pubs. Probably a class thing as I hear so many comments about Elderly Warmers or the Non Workables in other Spoons pubs.
Well this is one of the best Station pubs of any owners. Good bee,r Good service and Good prices. What's more to like.

With 30 minutes spare between trains in Leeds this morning, we elected to search out this Wetherspoon's branch in the station itself. It's tucked away next to a number of fast food outlets. You can also access it from the station's taxi rank. There is an alfresco drinking area overlooking said rank. Service was efficient and a screen shows train departure times. Ales were Greene King IPA & Abbot, Sharp's Doom Bar, Leeds Pale, Best & Mutiny, Goddard's Wight Squirrel, Ilkley Ruby Jane & Cairngorm Black Gold. The cider was Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon. I chose the Mutiny, which was billed as a coconut stout. But the coconut taste was only very faint. Decent choice when changing trains. But, if in Leeds for a longer period of time, it is best to venture further afield.

A Sunday afternoon visit while I had a 45 minute wait between trains.

10 ales on the hand pumps, I had a decent pint of Dukeries Farmers Branch @ 5.0%.

It was pretty busy but with plenty of bar staff on, the service was quick and attentive.I have used this 'spoons several times over the last few years , its one of the better station pubs, never problem getting served, pleasant clientele and decent ale.

Obviously a Spoons which is easy for a train you need to get. It is quite pricey for Spoons ale but it's quite nice. I find Spoons ale can be okay but not good. This spoons does nice real ale and the staff are quite nice and considerate when I've been in. Can be good if you want a pint or two before you're off out as well if you've come in by train.

Very handy place for a quick one when there is little time between trains, which is why I am a frequent visitor (there are pubs I prefer to visit not far from the station when time permits). However, the ale here is always in good condition in my experience, and I enjoyed a quick pint of Saltaire Elderflower Blonde on Saturday evening. The place was very busy as usual.

Excellent choice of beers, I come in often, and this pub always seems to have a varied choice of local breweries, even if they do favour Leeds and Kirkstall. Can be very busy however, with it being in the Train Station, and being so small. Still, good quality pints and friendly staff. Would Recommend.

Popped in on Sunday week for a quick pint while I waited for train to be prepared.

Good choice of ales on the pumps and I opted for a local brew Wharfe Bank, Lanterne Rouge @ 4.4%.

Cheap ‘Spoons prices.

Pretty much banged out, there was a large and noisy group of women I guess either finishing or starting a hen party!

The only pub on Leeds station I have used, no complaints from me.

Last pub and beers for the evening which ended a busy day of ticking.

Came in just after 11.30pm and the clientele were a mix of last drink of the night and getting ready to go on elsewhere.

Good choice of ales with half a dozen from the current beer festival.

My 2 halves were both well kept.

I sat and enjoyed my beers while unwinding from the day.

Decent modern 'spoons.

A busy 'Spoons on Leeds Station. No particular complaints.

Fairly bog standard Wetherspoons but passes the time when waiting for a train. Had Kelham Island Pale Rider at 2.59 and Ilkely Best at 2.45 plus offerings from Greene King and Rudgate amongst others. Lots of tanked-up blokes and orange-skinned ladies celebrating the Jubilee. Toilets are minging. Better than the White Rose bar though.

Wetherspoons - station - usual offerings - beer selection fair - beer quality fair - ambience pretty boring - customers? (Saturday evening - mobbed - blokes in shirt sleeves;large ladies in sort skirts - make up your own mind !) Plus points - it's very handy for the trains/they did actually have enough staff !

Contrary to other comments i found the service excellent. Just getting busy for breakfasts on a sunday morning (the large fry up , the best spoons one i've had this year...and i've had a few around the country) Good selction of ales though, too early in the day to try one though (wife was with me !)

Recently refurbished, although they've done little to the Gents other than change the toilet roll dispensers. Little change or improvement in service or beer quality.

Have been to better Wetherspoons. As mentioned it's in the station complex so gets very busy. Be prepared to wait to be served. After eventually being served I found my pint to be very much the bottom of the barrel. This should have been obvious when it was poured as resembled ditch water with bits floating in it. However, it was exchanged without complaint when I took it back. Not a great choice of beers either, only 2 guests when I visited.

In the city station complex and as such it's invariabley very busy. Usual range of half a dozen varied handpulled beers that are kept, well OK seems to be the best word. Service is fairly good for such a busy pub but the main issue here is getting a decently topped pint. Your pint will almost certaily be offered with nearly an inch of head, even the lager - something that is scandalous - asking for a top up can, at times, result in a reaction like you've asked for a freebie. Food is typical 'fast' pub food but has been fine everytime I've ordered. The Coors Redeyereuben mentions is now 2.40.

As comments for 22 Oct 07 review. Door staff present as req now though. Staff were coping with constant demand. My pint of York Brewery Wheat beer offering very enjoyable. Always a handy stop being part of the station.

My comment below should have been attached to the other Wetherspoons in Leeds - Becketts Bank.

Chris if you see this please delete both my comments on this pub.

We do not usually include Wetherspoons in our pre football drinks however because of the bad experience at Mr Foleys we knew this would be open. Quite pleased to see a dark beer available so went for the Treacle Stout by Ossett, I think. 2 banks of 6 hand pumps each side of the bar and possibly 8 beers available on Saturday. The nearest set of 6 hand pumps had 3 pump clips with surrounds stating coming soon. I personally prefer pubs that have a blackboard with forthcoming beers and not have them on show. I think we were served by a new member of staff as all the pints sank majorly before we even touched them. They must have been heavily sparkled but I still had to insist for the beer to be topped up to full pints. The pub is large and has an upstairs balcony type seating area probably for diners.

A quick pint pit stop, thats what this pub is. When you try order your favorite beverage the reaction is more like "Have just slept with my Mother?".

The customers varies from troubled clock watching travelers to absolute moronic nutters pickled in a reverie from their past.

If your with a mate who seems to attract nutters, then the boozer is to be avoided at all costs, (unless its a Monday Club 1.79 for a pint of Coors) other than quick one before the train home.

Good beer, nothing special but good for a railway station pub, 6/10
fat_beer_badger - 18 Jul 2008 17:39
Exactly. What score to give a bar that does reasonably-kept beers sometimes with an interesting range, but is also the haunt of drunks (face down at the table ... the staff just say 'Don't serve that one). That end of Leeds station is older than the rest and quite atmospheric however.

Having drunk here several times over the past few months I have to admit that the beer quality has only varied between 'good' and 'excellent'.
However, I have never found it relaxing to on my visits. The decor is of the 'bleached wood and bland' variety and so is not really the problem.
Ultimately, I think it's the mix of punters. Basically, it's agitated, clock-watching commuters/ train catchers versus large, raucous crowds of 'vertical drinkers' out on the pish.
Sometimes there's an almost palpable tension in the place.Fortunately, the pleasures of match day have passed me by.
One saving grace is that Rooster's 'YPA' is a regular beer.
aleandhearty - 16 Aug 2007 22:27
In the style of a station buffet bar, so it attracts all kinds of customers, and is best avoided on matchdays - Leeds and Barnsley "fans" clashed in August. Having said that, the beer quality is very good.

Visited in April 2006 so must have seen the old version which was pretty dire for a Wetherspoons pub.

I think the author of the previous comment is confusing this pub with the Wetherspoons "Becketts Bank" on Park Row. Wetherspoons at 1 City Square is at the far end of the Leeds railway station North concourse.

Until recently it was a rather run down place: sticky carpets, terrible service, rough punters, and if you wanted to avoid fag smoke, you had to sit in a small area next to the loos.

Following a refurbishment in June 2006 most of the pub is now non-smoking, some of the more earthy clientele seem to have gone elsewhere, more staff have appeared, and the atmosphere is generally much pleasanter.

The large outdoor area catches the sun in the evening, and its not a bad spot to wait if you're being met from a train.

Good range of beers and cheap but nothing else to recommend it. You'd be wise to avoid the place if Leeds Utd are playing as there's often trouble. Pub is on Park Row, not City Square.
