Richmond Inn, Portswoodback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
A traditional two room pub, owned by Greene King. Three casks from the Greene King range, plus a guest (Longman on my visit). Standard pub meals around £6. Relaxed and friendly, with distinctly older clientèle on my afternoon visit. Place is clean and tidy. Fairly ordinary place, but quite acceptable, which is generally typical for Greene King. To say that it feels like the common room of an old people's home may sound harsh, but feels appropriate. Apart from the low volume rock music the place feels calm, relaxed and homely, though there was a vicious assault on the landlord a few years ago on a Saturday night.

Myself and a couple of mates went into this pub at 2:15 ish on Xmas eve and ordered 1.5 pints of Batemans xxxb and 1 of golden hen. The xxxb was "on the cusp" and in a friendlier pub I would have returned it (the Golden Hen was good). What really annoyed me was that the tab came to 9.93. I queried the barmaid not just once but twice and her response was that one of the beers was 3.75 a pint and the other 3.60 (expensive for the area). Quite plainly this was not 9,93 for 2 and a half pints but her response was basically "computer says 9.93 - so go away. Not good enough!!! (either the xxxb or the staff attitude)

Friendly Greene King pub in the university district of Portswood. The locals were all keen to engage in conversation. The pub was modernised a couple of years ago to effectively merge the 2 rooms into 1. Whether it has lost any character, I'm not sure. But the locals assured us it hadn't. Beers on were Greene King IPA, IPA Reserve, Abbot & Old Speckled Hen & Elgoods EP.

Great range of ales, very friendly and nice cosy decor. Exactly how a pub should be. The garden is magical. The till is a real metal Victorian one - none of this shiny plastic rubbish!

Superb, friendly local. Good range of mainly Greene King beers, but always with a guest beer on. Clientelle generally local but students and passing trade welcome.
