First stop for me in Hexham town centre on a Saturday evening was the Tap & Spile. This pub offers bed & breakfast and I had contacted them for a room. But they never replied. In hindsight, I was happier I had chosen a place a little out of the centre instead. The pub has two traditional rooms and a good selection of ales - Dent Aviator, Mordue Saaz, Pennine Best Bitter & Credence Revolving.

My home for the night. I have always wanted to live in a pub! Superbly kept beer, i tried the brains and doombar, both perfect. High speed wifi. Lots of friendly people, not least the owners and staff. Great pub.

Well appointed and friendly chain pub full of chatty locals. 7 real ales on hand pulls on offer, sadly none from the local brewery at Dipton. Would be my pub of choice in Hexham.

Excellent music in the pub once a month.

Re-opened about a month ago boasting coffee and Wi-Fi. I doubt the old geezers will be taking advantage, mind. Been in weekdays and early Saturday and it hasnt really livened up yet. Beer choice is good but it probably needs to advertise its rebirth a bit more.
Nice to see it back open though.

Pub now closed and no prospect of reopening. Chain owners want rid.
Was on a bit of a downer weekedays were getting absolutley funereal.
Its demise is making real ale the exception rather than the rule in Hexham

Bog standard old-fashioned town centre boozer - on the small side, on a street corner on a main thoroughfare. Four or five ales on handpump - decent quality but not sensational.

A good, solid, reliable pub. You can always rely on the Tap & Spile for a decent pint and a friendly atmosphere. I haven't been in Hexham since the smoking ban, but I suspect this will have done the Tap the world of good as it was never very well ventilated and I always used to come out stinking of tabs. There are a few real ale tw@ts in here, but it's definitely worth a visit.

This is a lovely pub - I wanted to put it in my pocket and take it back to London.
It is Victorian with acid glass saying "Sitting Room" and "Public Bar" and suchlike.
The beer is co0l and excellent - Deuchars, Landlord, Black Sheep when I was there.
There is no music, and the locals are rather quiet - really a very calm pub.
