In here last Saturday and a bit quiet. Two bars with 4 hand pulls in each
Run of the mill GK IPA Abbott and Ruddels Counts but also Dark Star Hophead which was very nice and cost 3.30 a pint

We went in here at about 1.30pm on Sunday 5th June. The public bar was empty and i asked the friendly barmaid if we could bring our dog inside and order some food. She said yes.The roast could be ordered after 2 pm because the barman/chef had changed the menu back to the roast because the weather forecast had changed from hot and sunny to cool and wet that day and probably thought the roast more appropriate.I enjoyed a good pint of Greene King London Glory and my partner had a lime and soda and 2 packs of cheese and onion crisps for 5.80.We ordered the lamb roast for each of us and a half of London Glory. The roast was 7.50 per person and arrived within 20 minutes. The portion was very generous and well presented with condiments and mint sauce separate on a side plate. We were asked a couple of times by the friendly barman/ chef if everything was alright which it was.The public bar area had a useful spartan interior with a few tables and chairs on a lino type floor,a cosy low ceiling daubed with nautical maps. There was a dartboard and a shove h'apenney and a doorway to an outside smoking area. The woodgrain effect scumbling was quite convincing on many features. You could feel welcome in this bar if you were in work clothes or walking attire. For the more smartly dressed you could sit in the saloon bar which could be accessed via a doorway from the public bar which passed through a cosy snug seating area or from the street. The Saloon bar is more plush and lighter which is where the toilets are. Both the Ladies and Gents were clean and tidy with soap and hand drier. There were a few other customers here. One couple also had their dog with them. The pub is an old building dating from the 16th Century. It is good to visit a traditional pub with a Public and Saloon bar and a cosy snug.
A similar roast in an overstyled modern image establishment would probably cost 11.95
Our experience today deserves an 8 out of 10.

Two really lovely home made pizzas for 10 washed down with beer that hasn't been kept so well in the past - but now is the best pint for miles. Highly recommended

About time a bit of life at this end of the high street.

Mmm. Rather empty on a Thursday evening yet the musak was FAR TOO LOUD - live Lionel Ritchie concert - in an empty pub. An old fashioned place with beamed ceiling in a rustic village with heavy traffic. Agree that it is worth a visit.

The pubs in Rottingdean tend to take their turns in being the most popular/busiest. This pub had its heyday in the late 80's and seems to have been a bit dull since then. It is quite dark, so needs bright staff to give the place some sparkle. Having said that, the comminty spirit is very good in the village and because there are five pubs and a member's club, it is a particularly good place for a pub crawl. The beer is always good and the food excellent value.
Worth a visit.

They do a good quality, really good value (6.50), really big Sunday roast here. Actually, that's all they do Sunday lunch but if you fancy a roast, this could be the place to come. Slightly mediocre Greene King beer and it's a bit smoky (not for much longer!) and dingy inside (no garden ... or car park for that matter). Staff were friendly and Rottingdean's a nice little seafront village with the undercliff path to explore, a windmill and nice views.

Not sure how the previous reviewer found Beard's ales as they stopped brewing many years ago! This pub is now part of the Greedy King empire, but I have always found it pleasant. Unfortunately on my last visit, the front bar was inhabited by the local racist club, or so it seemed, as they were moaning about foreigners in general and Poles in particular. I finished my beer (Belhaven Fruit Beer) as quickly as I could and left!
