A back street pub but well worth the search. Good beer & friendly.

I first visited this pub in 2013, using this website as a guide, after a couple of earlier visits to Eastbourne had left me a bit underwhelmed by the town centre pub offerings. It is now in my top 10 WORLDWIDE pubs, top 5 UK & of course number one in Eastbourne. Each of 3 visits (a year apart) has provided me a warm welcome, courteous & efficient service but most of all a hearty welcome into the local's conversation. My pints of Harvey's Best Bitter (3.45) were fine & the company excellent. Hope to see it again in 2016.

The best Harveys sussex I had in East Sussex, excellent condition of the beer. Very friendly barstaff.

Unfortunatly their foodmenu is too much based on deepfried stuff.
Would like to see the menu changed into local and seasonal food such as dressed crab/ mullet/ local plaice etc.

How pubs used to be. Nice pint of Armada. Recommended.

Top pub for locals and tourists alike. Only one I visited twice and beer first rate both visits. Food only at certain times and days but looked value for money and a good standard. Cracking locals boozer but welcoming to tourists who like a good pub. highly recommended.

Cracking pub, super landlord and lady and staff who made me and my girlfriend feel like regulars on our first visit, went back the next day and couldn't get in the door, was rammed with the rugby on, amazing atmosphere, came back later in the evening. Lovely Harveys beers kept well and full of nice friendly regulars and large food portions and a bulldog!!, This is everything a pub should be. Definitely worth a visit if you are down Eastbourne way.

When people think of a traditional town pub this is the sort of place they have in mind. A large but intimate Victorian building with high ceilings and a central bar governed by a large and friendly old school landlord. The service is top class - warm, friendly, chatty, and customer focused. The people here really like their customers, really like their pub, and are clearly confident, proud and comfortable. There is a wonderful atmosphere throughout the pub. The customers are all relaxed and friendly. There are four handpumps - all Harvey's ales. I visited three times and the beers were in top class condition except for my first visit when the Old Ale was a bit vinegary.

The front room appears to be two or three rooms knocked together to form a horseshoe shape around the central bar. There are comfy armchairs and tables for drinking, eating and chatting, and some standing area near the bar to watch major sport events on TV. Walk either way round the bar to reach a small back room with a snooker table, and then through to a back yard beer garden which is a bit of a sun trap.

The pub is clean, in excellent condition, and has plenty of character. Look out for the Victorian pennies round the bar!

Food is excellent value, with a good range of home cooked and tasty meals, and veggies are well catered for. This is not only better quality, but better value than Wetherspoons. We had huge portions of veggie bangers and mash, with a big boat of veggie gravy from which to serve ourselves. 5.95 - which I think is the same price as Wetherspoons, and we got twice as much, and the mash was freshly made.

The beer is London prices - 3 for a pint of 4% Harvey's Best. But I'd rather pay a little bit more and have both my beer and my pub in good condition.

This is almost a perfect pub. One beer not being in good condition, lack of a sufficient quiet area, no decent views from the beer garden, etc, keep me from scoring 10. But by heck, this is close.

Simply the best pub in Eastbourne

After leaving Buskers Bar was glad to be pointed in the direction of this gem. What a pub should be.

Harvey's Tom Paine on draught was excellent as was the chilli con carne. Well worth a few minutes walk from the town centre.

It does kind of resemble to the soap opera pub with a similar name. A bit away from the tourist haunts it's a pleasant back street local, A harveys house selling most of thier ales - I went for the Armada while the others went for the ordinary bitter. Beer was good and pub was a porper old style local, Worth the walk up to.

In my opinion, this is a pub that hits the nail on the head in every area. It's always clean, warm, cosy and welcoming, and it's a PROPER traditional pub, not some bland restaurant posing as one. The drinks are a bit on the steep side, but it's worth paying the extra to visit this little gem, tucked out the way in what is otherwise a bad area. Their food is fabulous, and the Sunday roasts to die for!

Busy local bar with a good range of beers and ales. Considering its tucked away down a side street its incredibly overpriced and is possibly the most expensive in Eastbourne. A shame but someones being greedy.

Looking forward to another visit this August, enjoyed many a few of the real ales during my stay for Airbourne 2009. Very welcoming hosts, food always looked superb and heard many compliments about it.

Went in here with my sister who had a nice meal. Good range of beers and friendly. My sis felt a bit awkward at a group of guys making anti-gay jokes (she has a gay grandson). Good pint apart from that.

It's not the Victorian terraces of Albert Square but the Victorian terraces of Latimer Road. It's not the Queen Vic, it's the Victoria Hotel. And they're not Eastenders, they're Eastbourne-enders, but you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in the Queen Vic.

When I visited they had on handpump Harvey's Best, Old, Armada and Fuller's Porter. The Armada was my favourite: the landlord told me they have this on all year round. Good reasonably priced homecooked food served Thursday to Sunday.

visited recently, an excellent traditional pub with a friendly atmosphere, good food, good range of well kept harveys ales, visiting is a must

I agree with all the last 5 reviews, nice welcoming proper local boozer with 4 good real ales, Harvey's Best, Bonfire Boy, Armada and one other. Visited on Saturday 31st Oct and one half of the place was packed with footy fans. Not a problem, the other half was laid out for dining and the scoff looked good with generous portions. The couple on the next table offered us their untouched bowl of chips that they were too full to eat. The Halloween decorations were also over the top but quite novel. I'll be back here even if its a bit of a hike from the station.

Proper local pub, with a friendly welcome to visitors and a great selection of well-kept Harveys beers, all a stones throw from the seafront - close to the pier.
2.80-3.00 a pint
6ish a meal
20-25 a room
Need I say more? A must see...

Very good pub with a community atmosphere - a proper local, but still welcoming to casual callers. The Harveys Best was some of the best beer I've had in months.
Heatonian - 18 Sep 2009 00:05
A fine community pub - one of Harvey's treasures. A full selection of the brewery's beers was available, including the special Star of Eastbourne ale, although several barrels had to be changed as the thirsty Camra AGM delegates were getting through their pints very quickly. First class.

Popped in for a quick one just after opening time before making my way back to the town centre after staying the previous night in a sefront hotel. Seemed like a nice traditional style pub, although they'd gone for overkill with the Christmas decorations so it wasn't easy to visualise what it normally looks like inside!

Harvey's Best was the best kept pint I had in any of the five pubs visited on my trip which, considering I was the first customer of the day, was impressive. A bit off the beaten track but certainly worth it for the beer quality.

Excellent local, although a minor criticism is that the menu is a bit limited
eastyboy - 28 Oct 2008 08:33
Excellent pub with a lot of internal character and a full range of Harveys (Dark Mild was good if a bit weak). Loved the bottled range menu too. A real English pub experience.

As mentioned before this place has a dart board and it also has a pool table with plenty of elbow room. There is a courtyard at the rear that has some covered and uncovered seating for the smokers and sun worshipers.

Being a Harveys pub it wasnt surprising to see 4 Harveys available alongside Fosters, Kronenburg and Guinness. Not much of a selection if youre not into real ale, but whatever your choice it will be served with a smile.

I liked it here and would recommend it to others.
Strongers - 12 Aug 2008 14:50
P.S. Could do with a new dartboard - Am sure it's the same one I used to play on 20 years ago...

Came down for the tennis & as was staying close by went in for a pint (or two). Beers were fine & locals friendly - Not been to Eastbourne for over 20 years, but used to frequent this place occasionally - would definately call in here again (perhaps I won't wait as long next time)...!

Chanced upon this one by accident on a Sunday afternoon in January. Grand old corner building, which the new landlord has tidied up, just behind the fort on the seafront road. Good selection of Harveys, including seasonals and the food was just as popular. Generous helpings and very tasty. If you intend to sample the fayre, the earlier you get there the better, as a constant stream of orders soon had the specials board crossed.

Look this one up. The beer's as good as the food.

This pub has benefitted from a recent redecoration, which has not spoilt its features. Three Harvey's beers were available on my visit, the Sussex Best being very good. The food was also excellent. On the whole, much better than on my previous visit of about 18 months ago.
