A nice pub with a welcoming atmosphere, good food and a decent range of well kept beer- I don't go there as often as I should, one of the best pubs in the Enfield Town area
This lovely pub is easy to miss as the pub sign is on the main street and the pub itself is set back in a side road opposite. It may be Greene King but the pub is lovely, service friendly, usual core Gk ales however the St Edmunds Ale was spot on (£6.38 two pints) great big beer garden out the back to boot 8/10

Without repeating myself on the level of professionalism and friendliness this pub has to offer, it seems the brewery has finally decided to bring the standard of the pub up to reflect the standard of service patrons have received over the last year or so.
It closed for a couple weeks for a refurbishment and it’s come out looking like a completely new pub. Not an exaggeration nor over statement, the pub looks impressive. It’s just a shame that considering how great an atmosphere there was on (re-)opening night with live music, that they may struggle to make such events a regular occurrence in their residential area.
I must say I love this pub staff and landlord always smiling and friend (landlady not so much) The pub is always clean inside and out the food is excellent! There's a wide range of drinks both alcoholic and soft (although you have to now pay for soda water £1 a pint!!!) The only thing I will say that needs work are the ladies toilets there's no cools water tap only hot which is so hot it's like using water from a just boiled kettle and on more than one occasion one of the toilets has been out of order.

I believe I would be fair in my assessment if I was to say that this is one of the best pubs in Enfield.
With the long awaited summer finally here, I think you find most patrons of Enfield sat in the Crowns large garden! Beer gardens in London are rare and this one is quite exceptional; not only in size, but it also has an outside bar, lots of seating and a heated deck area.
The staff are quick, courteous and pleasant. The food menu is incredibly varied, and my personal favourite would have to be the fajitas.
Monday evenings are quiz night, which is always quite a giggle and definitely worth a visit.
There are your key regulars that you will find dotted around the place or propping up the bar and a clientele that varies from families, couples to small groups of friends creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
As the cold weather creeps in there are also open fires inside, a favourite pub for all year round.
Six months on and this place has just gone from strength to strength. It’s almost unrecognisable from the pub it once was under the previous management incarnate. What’s most notable perhaps is that this has all happened before their (presumably) busiest period of the year.
The extensive and varied menu is nothing short of impressive, and having eaten their regularly, I can only recommend a visit for the food alone. However, with the busy yet friendly atmosphere on both sides of the bar, I can see why it has again become a favourite of so many people who had once lost patience with the lack of effort and enthusiasm of years gone by. So coming in for a drink is always a good idea, particularly on a Monday night for their lively and slightly amusing Quiz Night.
Although competitive with the pubs in the surrounding area, the prices aren’t particularly cheap, but then happily it is reflective of the preferable demographic of most of the patrons.
The outside bar now being open for business over the weekends and no doubt increasingly often as the weather becomes more enjoyable is a definite advantage.
All in all, with every month that passes, it becomes increasingly difficult not to consider this the best pub in Enfield.
The building, garden, staff and so forth are still as good as ever, but now come with a vastly improved food menu that is well worth investigating. It was hard to see how this pub could have improved without compromising the things that have made it good for so many years (like previous ill-fated experiments with a pool table and live jazz bands for those with long enough memories), but it turns out the new range of largely flame-grilled/smoked dishes might actually have been the one thing that could kick it up a notch.
My last review came a few weeks after the actual visit which inspired it.
Since then, it appears the management has changed, the standards have gone up and the service is exemplary. The pub is still very quiet, but the vibe one gets from the staff is that they're making every effort to change that.
Unfortunately (for them at least) being out of the centre of Town will always be a hindrance, but the obvious enthusiasm to make the pub as successful as possible may be enough to overcome such an obstacle.
Average to bad pub that people should never, ever bother going in to.
I would also suggest to the staff that fridges are meant to keep things cold; not simply act as a shelf with lighting and door attachments.
The attraction in summer is definitely the massive beer garden at the back. Lots of mums drinking wine and sprogs running around mid-afternoon. Also plenty of empties on the tables which, I'm guessing, the slightly disinterested woman behind the bar was either to busy or not bothered about clearing away. Only two ales on tap - GK IPA and Old Speckled Hen. Had a pint of the latter for 3.05 and went down fine. Obviously benefits from the location, but would be interested to see how busy it is during the dark, winter months.
In summer this is brilliant (huge beer garden) The inside of the pub is okay but their beer selection is limited.
Nice garden. Young crowd and service slow. Food in parts is awful...got potato wedges for 1.50 and got 2 bits of potato worth about 2pence. Joke. Beer ok but try cricketers next door, smaller garden but more adult pub.
Good little pub this. They had abbot, GK IPA and speckled hen on. iPA was good and the welcome was warm. They have a big garden out the back that must be heaven in the summer months.
Popped in last night for the first time in 40+ years (as well as the Cricketers next door) and what a surprise! The place has definately gone up market and is now a very comfortable and welcoming pub with a warm atmosphere. Excellent friendly service and well kept ales. The menu is normal pub fare but looks to be very good value for money - may well sample it next time we're in Enfield.

Lovely location, nice garden, satisfactory staff and reasonably good food, but it still falls short of being a great pub. I think it's because it simply doesn't stand out among other pubs in the area, although it does overshadow (but slightly) its next-door neighbour, The Cricketers. I shall continue to go to The Crown and Horsehoes (not The Cricketers) but not as often as I would do if the food and service were a bit better than "acceptable".

Rude lady behind the bar. Wine not chilled enough, serivce slow, generally explains why its full of kids and the Cricketers next door is full of adults. Made a mistake visiting and wont bother again - go there if you like to drink and be surrounded by 17 year olds. Shame great builidng and layout but run very badly.
Lovely inviting warm pub! Been in there a few times over the christmas and new years period and I loved it. I will make sure to come back more often. The staff always had smiles on their faces and made good conversation with me and my children while we were at the bar ordering. The food was quite nice considering it's a pub, and pub grub isn't always up to scratch. The vast selection of wines and spirits was good to see too. Very enjoyable. The new managers are doing a great job running the place.
Thumbs up to the smiling young women behind the bar and the brilliant service.
This was my local for a while. It was slighty manky then and remains so today. never quite done the business this pub, given the location. For a while it was quite good with the jazz bands but that was years ago. The IPA is OK and not too badly priced but the rest is way too expensive - if you want a decent pint of ale then head for the Old Wheatsheaf which is a decent beer pub.
Just returned from holidays. Never used this pub before, so thought we would give it a try. Had an excellent meal. The staff were very friendly and helpful.Ambience of the pub is great. You must try the '2meals for 10' meal deal. They were excellent value and large portions for the price. Will definatly be returning.
oh dear.... it's gone down hill once more. a new manager has arrived who hope to improve the pub by letting us regulars play Bingo on a Sunday evening. If customers wanted to play Bingo they would visit a bingo club where the prizes, ambience and the food are better!
The new landlord needs to sort this place out before the summer customers arrive in their droves. Can the new people run this seasonal site? Watch this space.................

There is something about crossing a river to get to a pub that makes me have high hopes of a finding a decent establishment, but unfortunately this place was a let down. As has been said before it is tired and needs some work doing.
This is a Greene King pub and they had three of their ales available during my visit alongside a standard draught selection. I found the staff to be polite enough, although they certainly gave the impression that the last place they wanted to be was standing behind the bar.
The beer garden is huge and the grass is thin and patchy, but I was more put off by the thousands of cigarette butts that have been thrown on the floor and there has been no effort to clean them up for some time.
Nice location, shame about the pub.
This pub is shabby and the fabric is very tired. This is a shame because it has a fantastic site, right on the New River and with a huge beer garden. Called in on Monday 21 September 2009. The usual GK offerings on hand pump - IPA, Abbot - were OK and the staff were friendly enough if a little disengaged. The general air of delapidation discourages eating. Without some money spent on it, this pub is going to get a kicking from the very adjacent Cricketers which is currently closed for refurbishment.
Yes, this pub is the place to be in the summer months when (if) the sun shines.
True, the place does get busy but the bar is so small there is no space for any more staff to work behind it! I've spoken to the Landlady there who tells me that the Outdoor bar and BBQ helps to cut waiting times down.
The grass is the garden does get thin and patchy in the summer. I wonder how long many of the reviewers on this site would last if 350 people walked all over you on a sunny day.. food for thought???
Very much a summer pub but we regulars support the pub all year round, it's due to be refurbished in September the staff tell me, looking forward to seeing that.
Never had a bad meal in here either, if it's busy with food the staff give you a good idea of wait times - what can be fairer than that?
I went to this pub on Sunday and had to wait 20 minutes to get served with only two young girls trying to cope as best as they could. Surely on a Sunday it should be priority to get customers served quickly although the waiting time for food was reasonable and the quality of the food and drink were O.K. The large garden area was crowded with families and the empty glasses and crockery had not been cleared from any of the vacant tables, which does not give a good impression for a first time visitor, although some effort was made to clear the glasses during my hour long stay. The patchy grass area was also littered with cigarette ends which is rather a shame as these little things count, especially with so much competition and the present economic climate. Shame to see a such a lovely ideally situated pub not running to it's full potential.
This Pubs only bright point is a large garden. I Tried to drink the IPA and Abbot Ale...........UNDRINKABLE. Now I understand why people drink at home.
This pub recently came under new management. It used to be my favourite place to drink in Enfield and had a lovely atmosphere with friendly staff but it has recently gone down hill. The staff don't seem to notice who is next at the bar and this encourages people to queue jump, which can be annoying when you have been waiting more than ten minutes to be served and they are fond of having loud, intrusive conversations.
There is a good, varied menu but I was disappointed by the food both times I ate there recently. The first time I ordered a roast which took 45 minutes to arrive despite the fact the pub was relatively empty. When it did arrive the potatoes were hard and the chicken was quite tasteless. I really didn't feel it was worth almost a tenner. Also, I recently ordered a sandwich with chips and a drink as part of a meal deal but when it arrived without chips I was quite rudely told 'That sandwich isn't part of the deal' despite the fact it was the sandwich featured in the offer poster and they had taken payment for the offer! I wound up paying more than I would have had I ordered the sandwich and drink seperately.
This pub has one of the largest beer gardens in Enfield and it will be interesting to see how it fares over the summer months. I would love to see it get back on its feet as it is a lovely pub and it's faithful customers deserve better!
Just moved into Enfield, this pub seems to be one of the better ones. Not a bad atmosphere, more students than chavs, which can't be a bad thing? Great location.
Tne new manager in here has done wonders for the place in only a short time of being there. Gone are the pool tables replaced with comfy leather sofas and an open fire just in time for the cold weather coming. The conservatory has had all the wood replaced and is looking good.
Lots of space to sit down and have a leisurely meal with lots to choice on the menu. When we visited there was a curry night, 3 course special meal and fresh sunday roast dinners on offer which was good value given that it's all freshly cooked.
The staff who served us were warm. friendly and happy to be there. The real ales we had (a choice of 3) were kept just right on taste, temperature and presentation.
We'll be back for more no doubts about that.
Just changed hands & although the beer is good and reasonably priced, the food menu has just suffered from a MASSIVE price hike. Go to a Weatherspoons to eat instead.
I agree the large garden is nice its a crowd puller in summer but overcrowding and slowmoving bar line are a shame. The beer is resonably priced food is ok but theres room for improvement! and the crowd on a fri and sat night are young and loud not really suited for a family dinner! i wonder to if everyones legal to drink?!? Big plus is the river side view but no parking
Lovely pub, has a real family atmosphere. All the customers seem to know both each other and the staffs names etc. The pool tables have recently been removed, the beer is not cheap, however not expensive either and of a quality which is not seen in many pubs in the area. i understand that it is busier in summer, but for now I am enjoying a nice quiet (and warm!) friendly drink. Am told by many that the food is also lovely but have not yet had a chance to sample this, will post a review on this when I have tested!
The ONLY pub to go to in Enfield. The wheatsheaf used to be the way forwards but unfortunately it has been taken over by a less-than-experienced, sports mad person! The landlord in here is lovely and friendly as are the barstaff and there is no droning telly in the corner showing every sport known to man!!!
Excellent!
the landlord and of corce lady have turned this pub right around and good luck to them!!!! well done fantastic pub but not as good as the old wheatsheaf!!!! hahaha love the pub xxx crazy lady!!!
Go here now.
You only have a short time left before it's the worst pub ever again.
Nice pub, the garden is the highlight but for some reason it shuts far too early (10pm). A pint of Fosters is 2.50 so its rather pricy but a good atmosphere and lively weekends keep this pub busy. Staff are good, but expect to be ID'd if your under 21. Batman Costumes?!? Why?

Good at the moment, will be rubbish in two months.

This is a lovely pub for the summer. Has a huge beer garden with lots of benches and grass. Lovely pub.
This place will definitely be coming into it's prime in the coming months.
Keep an eye out for this one!
Right now, it's still too cold!
Cant wait till the weather is (slightly) more bearable where we can get back into the garden again!
I know it's not much of a review but it's a woman's perogative!!
Or is that something else?
Stopped going here a while because it deteriorated somewhat. Went in for first time and it appears it's been done up a bit. However, I still don't like it. A pub that puts the A in Average. Does have a big garden but that means busy at the bar in the summer.
I stopped going here after I waited two hours for a Sunday Roast and an hour for a chicken salad the week after. That I am glad to say was over two years ago and I believe the new management have turned it around. The best location for any pub in Enfield and the Garden is great, just a shame we live with the English weather.
Fantastic summer pub! A beer garden so big you could play cricket in it... Small inside, but comfortable. Prices aren't great but I've seem worse, much worse.
One of my favourite pubs in Enfield, it probably has the largest garden of all the Enfield pubs. Even good in the winter when the garden is not being used much. It now has two pool tables, in very good order too. It has a couple of fruit machines (25p machines, 25 jackpot) and a multigame video quiz machine. Food is good, and has a nice selection of real ales (but not well looked after).
The only niggle was that recently, on one of the hottest days of the year, they only had two bar staff on and the wait to be served was about half an hour at the bar.
Only saving grace of this pub is the garden and obviously for 8 or 9 months of the year, it's not exactly the nicest place to be.
Inside, however, is comfortable during the week, not too busy and a friendly atmosphere, mainly let down then by the poor tasting beer.
At the weekends it's definitely a place to avoid unless a year ago you were stood outside Macdonald's on a Friday night instead.
Used to be a regular here throughout the 90's but was driven away by the ridiculously inflated prices and the complacency of the management that meant that the pub had gradually deteriorated from a lovely place for a drink and one of the best pubs in Enfield to being a place that my friends and I conciously avoided. I am very pleased to say that these problems have now been addressed and the pub is once again a good place to head for on an evening out. Bar staff are friendly and quick, the whole place has had a lick of paint and new furniture and carpets, etc. which has improved the environment immeasurably. Prices have come down to a reasonable level and the choice of drinks has improved as has the quality. Food is approachable if nothing special and a little bit steep. Now has decent TVs for watching sport and pool tables if you are bored. Beer garden is still the largest and best of it's kind for miles around. Great location and at last the owners are making the most of it. Highly recommended, may well become a regular haunt again.
Quite nice during the summer to sit out in the massive garden.
In winter it's a bit naff on Friday and Saturday nights. Kids playing on the pool table trying to look a lot trendier than they really are. Any other time and it's fine
