We called in here Saturday lunchtime and found it to be a friendly place that served a fine pint of Woodforde's Wherry and we enjoyed a meal which set us up nicely for a tour of some of some of the pub-gems in Matlock.

Found myself in Matlock with nothing to do for a bit and decided to trek up to the Sycamore for a nostalgia fix, having been a (fairly regular) customer donkeys years ago when it was run by Arthur Bassett, a legend in both Rugby Union and Rugby League after representing Wales and Great Britain at both. Glad I did. Decent selection of well-kept beers. Cheerful staff. Food looked good. And best of all, there was a really good, friendly atmosphere about the place. Wish it was down the hill rather than up it but will certainly not leave it so long before heading back.

Went there without booking with about 10 family members, busy doing Christmas lunches however couldn't have been better looked after. Sycamore Burgers have to be tried and the two 8oz local butchers sausages with Mash, Peas, Gravy served in a giant Yorkshire Pud (with extra gravy) looked stunning and by all accounts from my Brother-In-Law and Nephew it was...cant believe they both finished theirs! Cheers...Tony

Turned a corner. Much, much better than six months ago and seems to have got its regulars back.

This pub has turned a corner - with Becky in charge check out the food - you can even phone your order in and have it ready on the table for when you arrive - good selection of well- kept hand-pulled beers including Timothy Taylors Landlord and Adnams Broadside

Seemed OK in Summer 2006 but recent visit found next to no customers on a Saturday night at 9.15pm and those that were there F'ing and blinding at great volume. I fear something has gone wrong here. Bass was still very drinkable though.

Solid, comfortable local, beers (Black sheep, bass, landlord) superbly kept. Good staff, cheap food (big portions), nice garden with boules pitch and absolutely no aggro/attitude. If going into town centre, good pub for starting in.
