please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
No comments since 2013? This is a popular eating place, the beers seems to be almost incidental. Looking at other review sites, they seem to be having a few consistency problems with their food recently, but the beers when we visited for their recent beer festival was excellent and the manager very pleasant too. He''s been there since November 2016 so earlier reviews about service, staff etc. probably aren''t too relevant.

Expensive but decent enough family stop. You get a lot of students with their parents at the start and end of terms/years. Most Grannies would be happy to eat here. This is a rebuild. The original Mill was largely where the Car Park is now.

Excellent pint of Trelawny had in this large pub, decorated in farmhouse style. A bit corporate, yes with obligatory pop playing but won over by the fantastic views of the weir. Must be a stunning spot outside in summer. Worth the 10 mins walk from town or St David's.
|
Have been in a few times recently drawn by the well-kept St.Austell beers including 2-60 pint Dartmoor Ale. Great to drink on a summers day right by the weir watching the salmon ("the" singular, there is only one, he's call Ken) leap.

Totally overated overpriced pub with poor service. The price we paid for our meal should have had table service. A total scandal and rip off 2/10!

Love this pub every time that I have visited the staff have been friendly and welcoming and the view over the river exe is great. Nice ale on offer here aswell enjoyed a nice refreshing pint of rattler cider.

Situated on the banks of where Exeter Canal meets the River Exe is the imaginatively named Mill on the Exe, a former mill where corn and paper was produced in times long gone. We learn that there has been a mill here since the middle of the 16th century and that wool, corn and then paper had been produced here at various times. The mill closed in July 1967 and was converted to a pub in 1983.
It's a large, rambling affair set over 2 floors with much exposed brickwork, wood floors and beams and what looks like an addition to the building in the form of a conservatory at the front. There's a landscaped garden / terrace at the front with different seating areas where you can watch the waters flow by, and a predictably large car park.
It's a family restaurant type of place with large A3 size folded menus and condiments on most tables. The usual range of starters, grills, sharing platters and children's menus is on offer along with teas, coffees, latte, cappuccino etc.
There's the inevitable chainy, impersonal feel that you would expect with staff dressed in corporate black shirts.
It's a St Austell's Brewery pub and beers on were Proper Job, IPA, and 2 pumps for Tribute. The Proper Job - 3.00p - was an excellent pint and I remember thinking at the time that it was the best pint of the holiday so far. A CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2009 sticker was spotted, but the pub is not in the 2010 edition.
I don't normally like places like this, but I have to say that my food arrived promptly, was well cooked and presented and did the business perfectly. The beer, as noted, was excellent and it was pleasant sitting outside afterwards ( on table number 506 ) watching the river go by.
I'd happily come here again, but probably not just for a drink.

Quick pint of St.Austell Tribute here yesterday, beer in very good condition and a nice seat in the sunshine overlooking the weirs. Shame I didn't have longer.
|
Used to sell St.Austell 4X mild here, not any more, but the beer is still good and the gardens over looking the River Exe are fantastic. A great place to spend a sunny afternoon supping ale about 10 mins walk from St.Davids station.
|
This pub has a phenominal location right on the river exe. Owned by St. Austells Brewery, although the food was fairly standard Harvester type, but still good with very generous portions. Tribute was good too. Would reccomend.
|
had a great meal here last time i was back in exeter, would recommend!
|
Visited at lunch time yesterday. Decent pint of Dartmoor and pleasent food, veggies very nice. A bit pricey tho.
|
Seems to be improving all the while and is now well worth a visit, even if they don't sell HSD. The 'Proper Job' is one of the better IPAs that you're liable to find in the UK, nice and bitter and well hopped and it's worth going to the Mill on the Exe for it alone. Let's hope they continue selling it. The food menu is varied and well priced, too. It's a pity that St Austell beers are expensive (not only in the Mill on the Exe, but in all of their pubs), but that's the only downside to a very pleasant pub.
|
I like it. Its the kind of pub that's never going to blow you away but you know what you're going to get and its consistent. Have 'Proper Job' as a Guest Ale at the moment which is excellent :)

Nice Pint Of Tribute Always 2 Be Had Here. :-)

I think that The Mill on the Exe is probably St. Austell's most easterly pub. I haven't visited it for a while (not since they stopped serving HSD). There were 3 beers on when I visited it yesterday - Tinner's, Admiral's Ale and Tribute.
They use sparklers to dispense the beer, which I think ruins the flavour of St. Austell beers. If you want to be pedantic you could ask them to remove the sparkler, as my Cornish friend does (he's not very popular in some of St. Austell's pubs because of this). Watch out for the barman who seems to be unable to pull a slow pint and gives you an inch of froth. They're Cask Marque approved, so don't be afraid to ask for it to be topped up.
The beer is outrageously expensive for Exeter and the South West. My pint of Admiral's Ale (4% ABV) was 2-50. If you're not that concerned about watching the canoeists on the river, walk back into town where (for example) you can have an excellent pint of Young's Winter Warmer (5% ABV) in The City Gate for 5p less.

The food does seem to get better.
As for flooding, this has earned it the nickname (at least from me) "The Mill IN The Exe" with my condolances to the owners! they'd only just finished the referb from the first flood when the next one happend! They now have proper flood defences!
As you may guess this is actually an old converted mill on the river. It's rather expensive. Serves great real ale, last time I went the staff were polite,
I think "nice" describes it.

Have eaten here a few times in past years and its getting steadily better. Lovely riverside location, shame this means its shut sometimes due to flooding in the winter, best ring before you walk there and find out as we have done! Will no doubt be benefiting from the new bridge from the other side of the river so at least you can actually get there now without walking along boring dirty road.
