Visited yesterday afternoon. 8 pumps at the bar, one off with an amusing pump clip boasting "The Knackered Pump Company, 0.0%, guaranteed to be clear, a little watery" which did amuse me. I went for a pint of Drop O'' The Black Stuff by Springhead Brewery, a pleasant porter at £3.90. Can''t fault the place.

I have not visited the Rising Sun since 2011, usually being waylaid at one or another of the many pubs hereabouts. My impressions on this visit were mixed: good service & a nice pint (Sharp's Atlantic, 3.75), but I had an overall feeling of blandness.

Have visited a few times since my last review and am always impressed by the number of real ales on. Never had a bad pint in here. On my latest visit, of the 8 pumps there were 6 on, 1 of which was a cider. I had a pint of the Seven Bro7hers IPA (5%) at £3.90 for the pint. A bit more expensive than I remember from previous visits, but by no means outrageous for the city centre, and I'd rather that than pay 50p less and get a crap pint.
Was fairly busy on my late afternoon visit on my way to the train station, but service was friendly and there was no problem getting a seat. Recommended.

I would like to reply to the previous review. I have worked in The Rising Sun for almost two years and was unlucky enough to witness the behaviour of this reviewer and his three companions that evening. If as you claimed, you are in fact a National Co-ordinator for CAMRA (which I doubt!), you will be aware of the laws concerning last orders. As I said at the time, I'm very sorry that you "didn't hear" the landlord shout last orders, but it seems everyone else in the pub did, and managed to get their last drinks in. Between you and the other "gentleman" in your party, you were rude to me and my colleague, you were aggressive towards the landlord and one of you slammed your empty glass on the bar while the other poured the remainder of his beer all over the bar. As for when your lady friend woke from the little snooze she was having at the end of the bar and demanded I give her a taxi number, I believe I stated several times the location of two taxi ranks within a minute's walk and also told her that there was a local taxi firm number located on the ashtray outside the building. Again, this was met with rudeness and aggression, which is when the landlord stepped in and saw you and your friends off the premises. As somebody who has worked in the hospitality and customer service industry for 13 years it never ceases to amaze me that there are still a sorry few out there who think it is their right to treat staff members with contempt and assume that they, as customers, are due special treatment. You are not above the law and I am not obliged to serve you after hours, it would also be illegal for me to do so. Running a pub is a tough job, as is working behind the bar, and people who behave as you did make it all the harder for us to do our jobs. You should be ashamed of yourselves. You said that you wouldn't drink here again while the current landlord remains- that wont be a problem. My employer only allows customers in who treat us with the respect and manners that we all deserve. In closing, The Rising Sun is the best pub I have ever worked in- the landlord is a good man who values his staff, the pub is well kept, clean and a very pleasant place to be and, as we all know, good beer and service speaks for itself!

A selection of 4 real ales - particularly enjoed Greenfield Brewery's "Silver Owl."
However, as we came to top up our glasses one last time "for the road", the bar lights went out and the sparklers were being unscrewed. We asked the bar staff what time they closed, and they said the bar had closed already! We had been sat drinking at the bar for the past 45 mins or so (the pub wasn't too busy).
There was no flashing light, no ringing bell, and no thoughtful "one more lads - we're about to close" from the bar staff - seeing as we were sat at the bar with empty glasses and they knew they were about to close.
Matters got worse when we double-checked with the landlord (who had allegedly 'called time' 15 mins ago from the end of the bar - 5 yards away - we heard no such call).
Having given up the ghost on getting another pint, we asked if he knew of a local taxi number, at which point he became abusive and aggressive, and - shall we say - "walked us to the door." As part of our final pleas, we explained that we were responsible drinkers and members of CAMRA, and only wanted one more pint given the bar's unnannounced closure. His awful comments regarding CAMRA will also be shortly be shared directly with them!
As long as he remains in charge, I have vowed never to set foot in the place again.

Huge bank of handpumps - 10 or 12? On my visit a range of Red Willow ales was on as well as beers from other breweries including Bank Top. A good mix of light and dark beers was offered. Friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere. City centre prices £3.50 a pint. Well worth a visit. 9/10.

This is one of those back street pubs I have spotted while walking up Deansgate and was curious to try just for the experience. From the outside I expected it to be a bit of a grotty hovel but when I stepped in I was very impressed - presumably has benefited from a refurb within recent history, nice modern decor and well lit. Have now been back several times and am always impressed by the selection of real ales available. I would definitely recommend a visit!

My first and last visit to this pub last night, first impressions were good, it looked like it had recently been done up and there was a good atmosphere, it wasn't particularly busy though, we made our way to the bar, where there was only 2 customers waiting, there were 2 members of staff serving, well 1 was while the other seemed more interested in talking to people at the end of the bar who had drinks !!!!!!! We waited a good 5 min for the serving barmaid to come near us and when we presumed it was our turn to be served she decided the ice bucket needed filling !!!!!!! We left !!!! If you want a pub where the regulars are more important than any new faces then this is the place for you

5 cask ales on, from a range of breweries (3 were local). However, they turned off the sound and TV without warning and announced the pub was closing (about 7pm Sunday) without calling last orders?
|
I think the last posting has been a little harsh on this pub. I visited last night and had a superb time. The beer was spot on, Moorhouse Blonde Witch, a beer from Mosley called Navvie and 2 or three other ales. They had the rugby on, the staff were great, the atmosphere was spot on and I reckon this could be a hidden gem of Manchester.... only downside...its closing next week for re-furbishment for 3 weeks... I hope they dont change things to much... I will defo be going back !!

28 December. Jennings IPA & Marston's EPA. Why bother stopping? So we didn't.

What a gem of a place. As we came out the back of Old nags head we saw the Rising Sun. It looks like a garage so we had to go in. As we all walked through a tiny passage the bar just opens up, its quite impressive as it only looks small from the outside. An exellent rage of beers and real cider on here. Hop back brewery's summer lighting, Leeds brewery's Samba, Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Moorhouse brewery's Blonde Witch, and Bank Top Brewery's Flat cap. Every single ale was perfect. crystal clear. Posters covered the wall advertising the fact that Rising Sun is in the Good Beer Guide. (And so it should be) This place shows all sports and its a very nice place for couples can go, as no idiots were in here. The staff were very chatty and we had a good laugh, the landlord was a right laugh too. There are signed pictures from Mike Tyson, Ken Norton & Ernie shavers above the bar. It was a pleasure to dink in here, certificates cover the front of the bar for there exellent real ales. We stayed in here for over an hour but the pub crawl must go on. shame :(

Excellent pub with 5 real ales & 1 real cider on pump. Very clean when I called in this week. I noticed that The Rising Sun has won Camra's pub of the season which the certificate was proudly being shown off on the bar. (& rightly so in my opinion!) All 5 ales were perfect. Good pub with also good food! ITS A MUST IF YOUR IN MANCHESTER!!!!!!

As with previous reviews agree it is pricey. Local CAMRA branch were visiting, they seem to like it.
|
Great pub sat in between some modern office buildings, great pint of copper dragon, even tho it was nearly 3 quid i would rather give my money to these places rather than a soulless wine bar. Packed to the rafters sat 5th at 4pm, good atmosphere another all round good pub.

Small and basic city centre boozer. It consists of one long room with a bar at the far end from the entrance. Half of the pub has a wooden floor, the front half is carpeted.A few tables dotted about andsome informantion about old Manchester on the walls. The beer range has definitely improved since my last visit however, with Black Sheep, Abbott, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin and Moorhouses Blond Witch available. Tried the latter which was in decent nick, but 2.90 is a lot. That's typical for central Manchester now, as bad as London. it's a decent place to pop in for a good pint but is pretty unremarkable as a pub, and along with its neighbours I consider it to be pretty expensive.

This is a cracker of a pub..! My local on a friday evening after work.. Great staff, jukebox, atmosphere, characters..all types By far the best little boozer in Manchester
|
This pub really is a hidden gem. It has everything a pub should have, great atmosphere, jukebox, mixed crowd and the bottled beer is at perfect temperature. The staff are friendly and efficient. This pub has now become my local.

At 2.65 for a pint of black sheep 3.8% its vastly overpriced compared to a lot of excellent pubs on the manchester real ale scene, choice of only the one real ale also, certainly not worth visiting for value or choice.
|
Great little City pub in a developing area. On a recent business trip to Manchester I spent a pleasant afternoon in here during an off-site strategic planning meeting. Very welcoming and decent beer.
|
Doesnt get particlarly rammed most of the time...It does look pretty wierd in its position next to the modern offices on the street...but worth a look in.
|
I remember the first time I came across this pub. I spent the day sampling various pubs in Manchester, and then saw this camped between two modern buildings. Couldn't believe it! Loved it ever since. Always go back when in M/C

One of my favourite pubs in Central Manchester. Good mixed clientele. 2 TVs for watching the sport. Really good pint of Bombardier. Friendly landlord and extremely efficient staff.

Great staff who coped with the demands of a packed pub, full of England fans watching the Turkey match. Might be as well to shut the doors earlier next time or get more staff on but they coped admirably and the beer was excellent.

Yeah, a nice relaxing pub in a good location.

I spent alot of time here in the fall of 2002 while visiting from abroad, and it was my fave pub in all of Manchester. The nicest people in the city frequented this place, and the staff were as friendly as it gets! A great place to hang out all day. The people really make this place fantastic.
