Very nice pub, my family and I ordered a Ploughmans board, which comes with extra thick slices of ham, blocks of cheese, bread, onions, pickle, etc, and also ordered a Sunday Roast, and a bowl of Nachos. It was quite filling and we would definitely go back there again! Normally most pubs give you basically a bag of chips and small amount of dip for 5 but one bowl was enough to fill me up! There are 2 zones for parking up on the hill, and they have lovely and friendly bar staff. It can be a little difficult to know which is the right turn to take but that goes for all of High Beech really. Would highly recommend a visit.

Absolutely dreadful, rude staff, drinkers (locals) are rude and unfriendly. Staff cannot be bothered to help in anyway. Ask for food and you might as well have asked them to climb everest. Bad, bad bad. Don't bother.

Really unfriendly staff. If u r not a local they look down on you. Very unwelcoming pub. Hopefully this was just a one off and it's not like this all the time. Lovely area. Looks great from outside and nice grounds. Shame about the atmosphere and the bar staff.

Lovely location, but prices too steep for what you get. Miniscule sandwiches are 4.75 amd a bowl of chips with about eight chips in was 2.50. Two beers 7.00. No wonder pubs are going out of business. If this one didn't have a garden and stunning view it would be on its knees. Bob-cut waitress v. friendly to us today as opposed to a previous comment, but there is a very dour fellow in the bar who looksa as if a close elative has just died.

large pub with a in a nice setting near epping forrest. Had the sunday Lamb roast, dry meat, chewey potatoes, under cooked parsnips, pretty poor. Also seems to have a bit of a wasp problem at the moment in the beer garden

I walked to this pub today and upon approaching we saw that it was child and dog friendly with bouncy castle. Excellent I thought. Unfortunately one particular employee did nothing for customer service. A request for the cheese in a jacket potato to be melted was responded with "We don't melt cheese." Hmmm. A worrying sign. I then ordered a burger (which came with chips). I asked if it was possible to have curly fries. "No it is not possible", was the response. I know the best thing to do as a customer is to remain nice to win people over rather than be rude. So I asked nicely if possibly they could on this occasion. I was told the system won't allow it. I pointed out that I would gladly pay the extra. Again I was told it was not possible. I pointed out that surely it was possible for one of their great chefs to simply cook and place some curly fries on a plate instead of straight cut ones. The middle aged blond hair (bob-cut) lady retorted, "Yes, we could do it but we don't, we have never done it and won't do it for people and I am not starting it for you". Try and guess on the quality of food. Please anyone, choose to spend your money in places where they value you as a customer. I will not be returning. The pub was not overly busy, other staff were friendly enough but there is no excuse for this experience. A shame because the location is fabulous.

Great location with a lovely view. Apart from that a typical chain pub with average food, average beer and plenty of screaming kids with loud mouth parents who think they own the place!

Potentially a fantastic pub in a fantastic location. Staff who can barely be bothered to serve you, dreadful food fresh from the microwave and a self service system that permits anyone to be loitering around your food (including sneezing kids on my last visit) because they can't even be bothered to serve you at your table all take away from the experience somewhat. A real shame. Try somewhere else.

I found a postcard amongst my Grandmother's belongings from her grandmother sent to her in 1901. It has a picture of The Owl - High Beech. The the back is written - "Grandpapa and Uncle George walked to the "Owl" yesterday - it is a funny old place over hundred years old and is liked for its good beer. All send fondest love to you .......etc" Her grandparents lived in Loughton at the time and my grandmother lived in Victoria Province, Rhodesia - she would have been about 3 yrs old.

The 'Don't tease the water otter' sign is a joke. At one time there was an old water cistern (full of water) with a chain running into the water. At the end of the chain was a kettle (a 'water (h)otter'). Lame joke. But, as the previous writer pointed out, great views.

Set on top of a verdant hill above the forest, there has been a pub on this site for centuries, though the current incarnation was built in the 1960s after the last one was demolished becauise it was unsafe. Serves decent food and the beer garden affords excellent views over Epping Forest below. And what is with that 'Don't tease the water otter' sign?

A very nice pub in a pleasant location. Particularly nice in the summer months.

A lovely pub, in a very pleasant rural location. The Mullens beers are well kept, and the food not too bad either. Even in the depths of Winter, it is a warm welcoming place, and the perfect way to break up a walk in Epping Forest. A genuine local country pub, within the M25.

Only to really agree with the comment above really, food pricey. It is a safe and nice place to visit with younger children though, safe play area, pet otter, owl etc Great view, al fresco beer great garden. Might be a bit grim in the winter months.Very pleasant pub.

A nice enough pub situated in the middle of nowhere which unfortunately precludes at least one member of your party(the driver) from drinking for the evening. Quite old fashioned inside but normally clean and comfortable. Service at the bar not too bad and whilst there isn't the greatest selection of drinks and the price is not particularly cheap the beer is always drinkable. Comes into it's own in the summer when it's beer garden affords a good view down the hill and there is plenty of space to enjoy an al fresco pint and the place becomes a bit more lively as people come from further afield than usual arrrive to bolster the small but perfectly formed number of regulars.
