Standard stopping point on a crawl - no real ales as far as I could see but an interesting carpet! Service OK

Always quite liked the Blackie Boy! Has been done out now, mainly used for people trying to get throught the alley to Perdu. God know why, Perdu is awful. Think its trying to go upmarket? Prefer it the way it used to be. Least its still got 'dick' and 'fanny'on the toilet doors.

Always pop in for a drink when back in Newcastle, nice dark proper pub feel inside bright ly lit bars are just too bleak an experience. Used to go down to watch the 5 (6) nations rugby when i lived up that way. Traditional array of Newcastle beers. have only been on an afternoon, have a feeling the clientele is a bit different in the evening, especially from Thursday onwards.

This is the pub where all the mothers of the 15 - 16 year-olds who fill up the pubs in the rest of the Bigg/Groat Market area go. Avoid.

Bring your prices down a bit and you will get more punters in. Reputation for old boilers that need a good service.

Pretty standard Newcastle juicer this, a cut above the normal Bigg market dross, worth nicking into for a sharpener if you're passing I guess.
Does anyone remember Sal, the lovely blonde barmaid that worked here about 5 years ago? Best cans in the 'toon and no mistake.

Something about this pub ensures that I'm a regular whenever I visit Newcastle. Maybe it's the dark but somehow cheery atmosphere, maybe it's the beer or the cheap vodka, maybe it's the sense of humour (toilets named Fanny and Willy), or maybe it's the fact that women have outnumbered men by about 25 to one on some of my visits. On reflection, I think it's that. Good pub, I've had many a wonderful night there.

The pub is as dark as the name, however the beer is alright and the staff are friendly enough, considering 20 "cockney's" turned up mid afternoon on a Saturday. Worth a visit if you like to drink with characture

Decent beer but a touch expensive. Attracts older crowds as opposed to young. Decent food in the daytime.

Like Lee, I went to this pub straight off the train on my first time in Newcastle in 98'. Good beer, warm and a lot of dark furniture.

I went to this pub sometime in the mid 1990s, and the photograph on this site suggests it hasn't changed since then. That is good as I found the pub to be warm, welcoming and keep good beer. Indeed it was the first Newcastle pub that I ever drank in - I think!
