This pub has improved since my last review in March 2010. There has been a new manager & lots of new bar staff. There is an ongoing problem with the cask bitter, it is served with a good head on it but within 5 minutes it is as flat as a fluke, resembling cold tea. This has been mentioned to the bar staff but as only one or two of them actually drink real ale comments fall on stoney ground.
Last night, Wednesday 23rd October was a normal night in the pub until I went to the bar to order my last drink at 11.55pm. This pub shuts at midnight so I was well within the advertised hours. I asked for a pint of bitter only to be told that the pub was closed. I asked to speak to Rory the duty manager, I informed him that there had been no bell at ''last orders or ''time''. He just stated that ''We are closed''. I asked him why he hadn't informed the customers in the pub as to why they were closing early. He replied ''Show me where it says that I have to inform you that we are closing early?''. I said to him ''That is disgraceful'' & walked away. As I was leaving the pub, I said to one of the bar staff (female), ''Please tell Rory that I will be reporting this to head office tomorrow''.

Can't see many recent comments. Staff are fine despite comments - I don't eat there so won't comment on that one.
Latest info - discounts for CAMRA members no longer available as of today. The manager is 'using his discretion' not to take them other than the 50p off vouchers.
It never was much, but if he's using his discretion not to welcome there, I'll use mine not to buy that extra pint.
His choice.

I went to this pub recently on a mid week evening when it was quietish. I was looking forward to a pint of cask bitter & I was expecting a good choice. To my 'bitter' disappointment out of 12 hand pumps, 6 had signs on stating '' ??? bitter - coming soon'', 3 had the signs turned away from the customer because the barrel was empty, leaving only 3 bitters on sale. There was a choice of Abbott Ale & 2 straw coloured bitters which are not really to my taste.
There is absloutely no atmosphere in this pub, it just isn't like a proper pub. The staff were a mixed bunch, 2 friendly, 1 ok & 1 miserable person with no sense of humour whatsoever.
I won't be rushing back to the Robert Shaw.

It has improved a lot recently. Good beer at a fair price and the new staff are a big improvement on the old lot.

Have to agree with all the comments above, no other wetherspoons pub I have been in have stroppy staff like they do at Westhoughton they don't even look round the bar to see who is next to be served and even when the pub/Beer factory is quiet it can still be hard to get served, the Customer can be viewed as a nuisance who interrupts the staffs conversations.
The Beer: I guess real ales especially the out of date ones wetherspoons serves can be a bit temperamental but when on form Blonde witch, Abbots Ale, and Pendle witch are beautiful and cheap.
Summery Staff have serious attitude problems the beer can be nice when on form.

While it may have cheap beer, the service in this place is a total disgrace with staff that cannot control their own tempers. We walked out of here 6 months ago in disgrace and have never been back after being verbally abused by a staff member. The food is hit and miss and quite often is either cold or certain food is not available. It is also very unclean with absolutely no atmosphere.

A good pint of Abbotts for 1.39 but like most Wetherspoons it is boring. Excellent beer at fair prices. A drinkers pub rather than a place of entertainment.

The beer is very good. The food is ok. The staff need shooting. But at least this pub is open when you would expect it to be open, a rarity for this area.

Very poor for a Wetherspoons. Slow service even when custom slack, dirty tables, unemptied ashtrays and tables not cleared after meals. Beer good and prices are good but the quality of staff lets the name of a great Westhoughton actor down. Robert Shaw wouldn't be seen dead in there. More atmosphere on the Moon, rated 4 for good real ales.
