Red Lion, Cotherstoneback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Describes itself as an "Eighteenth century (1738), grade II listed, stone built Coaching Inn set in the idyllic Teesdale village of Cotherstone. Within the walls of the Red you won’t find a T.V, jukebox or bandit. Just the crackle of the open fire, good beer and the pulse of conversation and laughter". Whilst it's like drinking in your grandmother's house in the 60s, it's ridiculously cheap and the Yorkshire Dales Brewery Rowantree and Aysgarth Falls were both quite good. Very different from its near neighbour The Fox and Hounds but well worth seeking out.

Does anyone actually update this website anymore ???? Red Lion still an awesome real ale pub with beers at only £2.40 a pint (that of 2015) which is truly great enterprise when supping and enjoying the "League of Gentlemen" clientele !

Great rotation of real ale with Jennings Cumberland as the default. Honest village pub which hasn't been mucked about with, long may it continue.

Still love this pub. Reliable good beer, excellent landlord, warm and atmospheric. Deuchers IPA highly recommended.

June '08 - The Red Lion was voted Darlington CAMRA Rural Community Pub of the Year, and 'Runner Up' Country Pub of the year. Many thanks for everyone's continued support.
I'm still just trading on drinks alone - and for the time been can't see a return to the kitchen, sorry everyone!

Dec. 07 - The Red Lion is now trading as a wet only free house. There are three real ales available throughout the year, with Jennings Cumberland always on tap, plus two local guests. The Red Lion was awarded 2007 'runner up' Darlington CAMRA Country Pub of the Year. A recent addition to the pub is a free to play pool table, which is nicely located in a separate room away from the bar. The Red also now boasts three domino (5's & 3's) teams; the latest addition being the Red Lion Cubs, and as the name would suggest is a team of young'ens! Hopefully their enthusiasm will continue to grow and strengthen Teesdale's 5's & 3's league for the next generation. This is a shining example of one of the last locals, a dying breed of community pubs that entertains with conversation not music TV. The pub is the hub and long may it last!!

Is this the best Real Ale pub in Teesdale ?? certainly has a good case...Traditional village pub with a good guest ale rotation policy means that this Inn is worth seeking out if in the region.
