The Rose & Crown was the last pub we visited on a tour of Bury St Edmunds in late October. It's a traditional Greene King pub on the same street as the brewery. The interior is old fashioned and all the better for it. Beware the opening times, as it does close on weekend afternoons. Ales on my visit were Greene King IPA, Abbot & XX Mild, Skinner's Betty Stogs, Exmoor Gold & Timothy Taylor Landlord. I always enjoy their Mild, despite the low ABV.

A very traditional pub close to the Greene King Brewery and the Theatre Royal. A Greene King pub and one with decor firmly in the 80''s but that adds to the charm of this pub. A very pleasant landlord. They usually have three guest beers on as well as the usual GK offerings. Timothy Taylor''s Landlord is often on and they do keep a great pint here. Popular with workers from the nearby GK Brewery so that is a recommendation in itself.

It is friendly and traditional. One of a few GK pubs still selling the superb XX Mild of which the landlord is a firm supporter. The old fasioned jug and bottle is a pleasure to still and apparently does well particularly during the summer barbecue and party season when locals need some extra bottles or even a jug of ale. Tasty solid lunches.Excellent ham,egg and chips at a good price.

My 3rd and final pub from the 2014 GBG to tick and its this GK pub within a stone's throw of the GK brewery.
The Oakes Barn was very good, The Dove was a cracker and the Rose & Crown is just decent.
It’s an unassuming small old fashioned back street boozer. There are 2 bars with most of the pumps being in the front bar.
6 ales with 3 of the offerings being from GK and the other 3 guests. My choice was Wolf Brewery Dog Star @ 4.4%. A decent enough pint
Pretty quiet even though there’s quite a few punters in, as I say it’s just a decent pub nothing fancy but good for a beer.
Sandwiches were being served and they looked good.
Towards the back of the pub there are a few shelves with books on, all books for 50p and the money going to charity. A nice idea by the pub.
7/10 for me.

Another pub which I always make a point of visiting when in town. Best GK Mild for miles around and the pub is a bit of a "time-warp". Near the brewery and just off the town centre. A couple of bars and what looks like an old "Jug and Bottle". Beers are IPA; Abbot; Mild and guest (Hook Norton Old Hooky on this visit). I got chatting to the landlady and she knew many of the people I worked with in Bury but she was surprised to find I was not a "local" from down the road as she had thought, but actually all the way from Berkshire!

Used to go there daily whilst at school in the late '70's but had an odd experience one day... Walked in and the landlady's daughter accused my friend and I of making some sort of 'prank' phone call. It seems that her first husband was 'carrying on' with a newer, slimmer model (male or female-we never found out) and it was something to do with that. Should've sued and got free beer for life!

This pub has hardly changed in my lifetime, went in recently after 10 years away from Bury and it seemed the same as it ever was. No frills, just a proper local pub, possibly the last in Bury town centre. I've only been down a couple of times recently, but usually one guest on and then GK ales. The only place in town (that I know of) to sell Greene King XX Mild, which I am rather fond of. This pub is family run, and all the more special in a town where the usual style of my pub management is to try and shoehorn a square bar type peg into a round historical pub hole hole. Long may the Rose and Crown continue unchanged. (oh, and food wise you can pick up snacks like beans on toast for a couple of quid).

Tried to go in there yesterday afternoon but was shut!

Old-School pub. If it feels a bit quiet and reserved when you arrive, have faith! The ales are easily the best on offer in my hometown.Awesome draught Abbot/Abbot reserve.Silky smooth. Quaint interior, vinyl floors, ladies darts team in residence. Full of that thing Greene King will regret chasing and ripping out of virtually all the other pubs in Bury......character and genuine friendly landlord/lady. Don't come here for luminous over-priced cocktails and designer-posers.This is no-bull original Suffolk boozer. The last of the greats in Bury,my hometown for 30 years. And i love a pint!

Friendly staff excellent beer cheap food, how a pub should be!!

This is what a traditional town pub should be. The staff were friendly and the beer was well kept. I don't normally like Greene King's beers but in here they tasted very good. The decor is a bit 80's and it does look like it could do with a coat of paint or two but that's half the attraction. When I called in there were several Greene King staff drinking in here. If you are in this part of the town then this pub is well worth a visit.

The Rose & Crown in one of the only real pubs still around, the landlord and landlady are the longest serving in Bury, and as such expect something old skool. Real ale is the key at this pub, yes they serve lager and spirits, but you really come here for a real good pint. Ok the beer is Greene King, but the new tenanted guest ale choice does mean they should sell something that isn't made by GK! They also have teams that play crib, darts and dominoes and there is always people around who are willing to play a game with you. They serve food at lunch, but do not think gastro think pub grub! THe best pint in Bury!
