Didn't like this pub, probably because of their rude reluctance to admit us for drinks only. Presumably with so many people wanting to eat here (even at 4pm on a Monday) they aren't bothered about repeat custom. Whatever my £4+ pint of Jolly's Reward Ale really was, it was only average.

Stunning location - over the harbour with the coast path running through the garden.
Beer wise - its Cask Marque accredited, with an old Timothy Taylor Landlord green sign on the front. I was delighted to see it was sold and in super condition. Other beers noticed were Black Sheep.
The food was amazing - crab sandwiches and kipper pate shared between us. High quality.

Despite previous comments, we had a great evening here - good atmosphere and good food and drink. Still have Mordue Workie Ticket as well as Timothy Taylor and Black Sheep on tap - in excellent shape too. Food was really good and very pleasant and attentive staff. Definitely worth a visit.

We've enjopyed previous visits to this one but were disappointed this time. Three ales on but none in particularly good nick (not even the Tim Taylor's). Didn't try the food.

First visited 22 yrs ago when this was a friendly local with incredible views from the upper tier - Now Craster is full of holiday cottages and it was inevitable the pub would change. It was in need of a little TLC but the refurb has taken away some of the atmosphere, and the upper tier outside balcony has destroyed the sea views - salt spray has given the retaining glass a frosted appearance that stops sitting inside patrons having a sea view. We found the food good but somewhat expensive. A real positive is walkers are still welcome and the beer (what else is a pub for?) top class, Mordue Workie Ticket and the iconic TT Landlord on tap - Overall I left with a heavy heart but cheered myself up by nipping over to the smokery and bought kippers for breakfast! Some things do stay the same!

Enjoyed a cracking couple of pints of Workie Ticket here recently after a walk from Embleton and down past Dunstanburgh castle. We sat up in the windows that overlook the sea and it gives the place a lovely feel. The food looked fairly expensive, but came in good portions and looked good - sadly lacking any veggie food though, so we didn't get to try. Overall, I wouldn't echo many of the previous reviews as we found it quite a pleasant little place.

I'm told it is under new management and they are making an effort. Yes there's Black Sheep but also Mordue Workie Ticket, a fine bitter well served. Food is well presented and very tastey with a good varied menu although just a tad pricey. The large windows overlooking the sea are mesmerising with Eider ducks, terns and gannets all performing. A lovely place to spend a summer evening, only it rained every s****ng day I was there in June.

Not a bad pub, but I echo the 'nothing special' reviews below. Decent ale (the ubiquitous Black Sheep), a dark main bar with whatever sport they can find on Freeview on a large TV, the sandwiches were ok (that's all they were doing from the menu because of the dodgy weather). The old girl behind the bar was very friendly.
One thing it does have going for it is that the upper seating area does have a nice view of the bay, with the waves crashing in all around, which does improve the overall feel of the place. Just needs a bit of love as others have said.

I agree with the dirty and dingy description. The beer is great as are the views but the pub needs a refurb desperately. the food is basic but expensive. Ok but nothing to shout about pub.

Probably my favorite holiday pub- unpretentious with a fire in the main pub, absolutly stunning views of the coast from the upstairs room, that can be savoured along with pints of Workie Ticket. Food simple and good local fare- Great smokery otherside the road!

Would not say dirty and dingey just lacking in a good refresh. Adequate though the staff could be a bit offish but got better the more times we went in whilst on holiday and by the third night were quite chatty. Two real ales Black Sheep and Mordue Worky Ticket both in top form so no quibbles there. Beer Garden overlooking the coast and harbour. Good place to have a drink whilst taking in the smoke coming from the smokery oppostive and then popping over to buy some fabulous Craster kippers. Yum.

Dirty and dingey,living off its reputation of many years ago, real ale expensive and really no good at all,as long as it is frequented by tourists and walkers who seem to not care about the quality they should be receiving it will remain the same.

I've only visited twice, each time for a New Year walk along the coast. Contact by phone beforehand was friendly. On arrival, welcoming staff and locals. Menu not extensive but quality is excellent. Fab chips and Kipper pate worth the 1.5hour journey.Good pub atmosphere often missing in food pubs. Will have to arrange a summer visit to sit in garden and enjoy fab views.

From Northumberland myself, the last time we were in there the food seemed chaotic. They were losing control of who had ordered what and to deal with it, they simply covered the pool table, put the meals down on it and said that diners would have to come in from the garden to collect. Not exactly great customer service. This is a pub in a fantastic location being run by staff who haven't a clue- which is sad. The beer is Ok but limited; I tend to stick to the brown ale as I know how it is going to taste everytime.
To be fair it is the only pub in Craster so it doesn't have anything to compete with it. However, I would rather take a short drive say to Embleton for a better atmosphere and service, whilst also avoiding the crab sandwich/Craster kipper brigade. It's overrated anyway.

Slightly dark and dingy,verging on the tatty, but without an accompanying cosiness. Overlooks the harbour, with a beer garden virtually on the sea's edge. Two real ales: 'Speckled Hen' and the ubiquitous Black Sheep Bitter. (The brewery certainly has Northumberland sewn up). The'Hen' seemed fresh but was served way too cold, a common criticism of many Cask Marque accredited pubs I feel. Staff were enigmatic and stony faced. No attempt at a warm welcome or any banter, but quietly efficient. Bizarre. Food was limited to just fish and chips during our visit. However, they were superb, with melt in the mouth fish. In short, a bit of a curate's egg.
