Tenancy taken over in March by Lawrence Dixon, (Cambridge CAMRA Life Time Achievement Award 2013) from The Champion of The Thames, managed by the lovely Bex, The Clarendon Arms is establishing itself as the best place for food and beer in central Cambridge.
The most amazing homemade scotch eggs and pickles with hand peeled chips - yum! Always two guest ales, along with Abbot and IPA and the not often seen GK mild.

Well worth a visit for the best Sunday Lunch in Cambridge for only £9.50!

Under ( yet another ) new manager. Still a good pub, as it was under the previous 3. No idea what's going on here, but ale's well kept and pub is good. In spite of whatever the Green King landlords are doing.

I just heard yesterday from the bar staff that the pub will be closing in early march! What terrible news. Apparntly Greedy King have struck again; i didn't press the issue but it was something to do with a new deal and a loss of cash?

This pub has suffered loads over the last frew years but I thought the team there had sorted it out. Hopefully one of them can let us know what happened or is happening.

So you have got three weeks, and i recommend you MUST come and at least try their mild, and their incredible chips, before they are gone for good.

Like The Snark, I'd also avoided this great pub since Barry left, after a hugely disappointing visit under the last regime (I think they did try, but it just didn't work). But after seeing the advert and write up in the local camra newsletter, I was tempted back in.

It was a little quiet (about a dozen people midweek), but the beer was great: Greene King Mild, York Guzzler, St Peter's Best and Milkwood Nut Brown, with GK Abbott and IPA as ballast. We tried the food, and was quite impressed - nice chunky 8 oz steak (11.45), thick bit of gammon with decent eggs and pineapple (about 9), both with massive chunky chips (proper chips), with a simple green side salad. I'd be tempted to say that the gammon and eggs was rival quality and value to The Geldart's (which is saying something).

Good to see/hear regulars are drifting back, as it could do with a bit more of the old atmosphere. Most of the pub paraphenalia has gone, so it felt a bit 'empty', but I'm sure that will pick up as this pub is definitely back on the map. With the Elm Tree and Free Press just round the corner, this bit of town is now worth the discerning drinker spending the whole evening in again.

I'd given this pub a wide berth since the long standing landlord Barry left a couple of years ago, but now on a second change of regime I found myself back. Although the real community spirit seemed diluted, old regulars are coming back. Greedy King beers are what you get, but they are well kept and the guest list is expanding. Food looks good (but didn't eat), and bar staff smile nicely - necessary given the prices. This one's on the up...

This place used to be a great boozer and I have spent a lot of time over the years drinking away the hours in it with some good friends, I heard today that it has been taken over by the guys that run The Green Man in Grantchester which is my favourite pub in that village. I am really hoping that they make the Clarendon into something as special as that, they have loads of different beers and its just such a cool place to hangout. I am going to pop down this weekend and see how much the place is changed.

Nice place. Stopped in for a quick half when I missed the bus, a pleasant surprise!

This a great little oub with very freindly staff. The landlord was kind enough to lend me a ladder to get a shoe off the roof of a house (Another story entirely) on the promise that I A) brought the ladder back B) we came and drank in his pub. I'm glad i followed through with both of my promises. The beer was good as was the food, which was very reasonably priced. The pub was getting busy as we ate our food but this only added to this great little pub.

Thanks for lending me the ladder. I would have been shoeless until returning to Suffolk!

Lovely chracterful back-street local, friendly staff & guvnor.Had a good lunch there and was pleasantly surprised to find mild on,which was in excellent condition.Wide range of newspapers available. I don't live in Cambridge but if i did i would certainly make it one of my main haunts.

This pub is a little gem. Set in a quiet back street just round the corner from the bus station. The landlord Barry is very friendly and certainly made a little time to talk to me on what was a very busy Friday night.

The pub serves Greene King Abbott and IPA. I was pleasantly surprised to also find Greene King mild on the pumps. Uniquely in my experience there were 19 different malt whiskys on offer, a definite improvement on the one or two usually available in the average English local.

The pub has a strong following for darts and cribbage plus regular quiz nights. It also boasts a small reference library for crossword and quiz enthusiast so that one can sit quietly in the corner trying to complete The Graudian crossword.

Home made food is served with a regular daily special, there were lots eating which is usually in my opinion a good sign. I didn't actually eat here but it looks good and I shall definitely place it on my places to check out list.

Definitely suffering from there being only a few scorers - this is a super pub. Greene King, but always with a real guest, the landlord is friendly and the atmosphere convivial. It is a classic-style pub, with no pretence. Sunday lunch is gloriously satisfying and the beer superbly kept. Even the GK beers (not my favourite) are very enjoyable here. This pub forms a superb component of a crawl down King Street and towards Parker's Piece: Champ of the Thames, Radegund, Clarendon, Elm Tree, Free Press.

Gets a big plus from me for selling beer other than Greene King - I had a very nice pint of Tetley's mild here. Decor and pub type is fairly typical for this part of Cambridge - quite understated and mellow.

I think it's worth more than its review score at the time of posting (5.9/10). It has lovely aged decor and locals, and the sandwhiches and Bangers & Mash are the stuff on legend. Definitely worth a treck across Parker's Piece.

As a student in Cambridge, this pub was somewhat off the beaten track but well worth seeking out. Standard Greene King beer range although periodic guest beers made an appearance, both of which were well maintained and served.
Staff were efficient and the pub generally had a good atmosphere. It features a small beer garden outside (2 tables). A limited menu is served and the food was pretty good although not spectacular. The pub also has accommodation although due to its proximity to Central Cambridge, it tended to get booked up well in advance. Visited last August and still going strong, recommended if you want to avoid bumping into student dominated watering holes!

dark, dingy, unfriendly pub. concrete corpse-trench/beer garden. get away from it all at this unique tavern. close to fire station.
colinqueen - 24 May 2006 01:46
Whilst subtly Greene King (only the crown logo was displayed, not the GK banner), it had a superbly served Tom Wood's guest ale.

A pleasant and quiet luchtime pub, I don't know how lively it might get in the evening - if it is lively get there early if you want a table in the garden!

It's also a B&B, which will be very useful to know in the future, I'm sure.
