Almost two years later I bravely entered the door and to my great relief there was not a Greene King beer in sight. Deuchars was still there accompanied by Courage Directors, Edinbrew Pale, Timmy Taylor Landlord, Oakham Citra and Cairngorm Wildcat. The Landlord was as good as ever but the Wildcat was even better, strong at 5.1% but very smooth and helped to wash down a tasty rump steak with whisky and peppercorn sauce and fries. A big thumbs-up to the three young ladies serving both food and drinks who were all friendly and efficient and importantly had smiles on their faces. My faith in this bar has been restored.

I have visited this bar previously but not posted a review although Mappiman's 2011 description remains accurate. There are 6 handpumps with the inevitable Deuchars, another that I cannot remember and the remainder changing regularly but usually a good choice. However last Wednesday these 4 pumps were infected by 4 different Greene King offerings. How depressing! I walked out and spent my money in the consistently good Stockbridge Tap close by.

We were staying in the area, and armed with my Camra pub walks in Edinburgh book, this was the closest trail. There were meant to be four pubs to go to, but due to the quality of the first two, we only got half way through.

This is deceptively spacious (christ, I sound like an estate agent). Once you fight your way through the smokers who wont budge for love nor money, you enter a central, horseshoe bar with plenty of seating and then a room off to the side for eating.

We sat at the bar and people watched. We saw a man with a waxed moustache and a fat Noel Gallagher.

The beer was good - I was on flying scotsman and the staff were friendly.

Would come back.

Really nice below street level stockbridge boozer .

Its big enough with extra seats through the back and a roaring fire . Sky sports for the football and a decent quality pint , decent selection all round . staff ok as well .

It can get very crowded around the bar and a lot of the locals treat the gaff as their personal property which can be annoying but theirs no doubting its a quality shop.

I'd highly recommend a visit to the Bailie if you get the chance. It's an underground bar with a low ceiling so has a cellar bar feel to it. There are a few windows that add some light and some outside bench seating for smokers and sun worshippers. Inside there is a small circular bar with the spirits on a central island. There's the usual Scottish offering, Tennents, McEwans and Bellhaven etc. Six real ale pumps which look to be split between three regulars, Deuchars, Directors and Cally 80 plus three changing guests. Prices were a bit steep at 3.25 a pint but I'm getting used to paying London prices around here. The bar has stools and comfortable seating surrounding it with an eating area at the back with a good pub menu. There are lots of old local memorabilia on the walls and what looks like some original fixtures and fittings including some old glass in the windows and door. Newspapers and local information leaflets are available. Sky Sports shows premiership games and whilst I was there they were also showing the test match. Nice laid back friendly bar that has a lot going for it.

Lovely food, wonderful Guinness and friendly staff. Beautiful looking pub too and very comfortable. Was a bit on the pricey side compared to other pubs in the area but not too bad. Could do with getting some extra herbal options in on the tea front.

New town boozer that lies just below street level. It's quite large but very cosy- the large bar takes up quite a section of the pub. Nice roaring fire too and a great atmosphere. 3-4 real ales on tap and a few papers to peruse- perfect for a lazy afternoon. A very pleasant experience.

Really nice pub, can get really busy. Great beer but really pricy. Actually dearer than pubs I drink in in London.

lying below street level in a quiet but picturesque part of town, the bailie is a hidden retreat that once you get down and through the bar, is surprisingly large. i love the decor of red and black that gives it a traditional and warm feel and you feel that you can happily spend longer than you should there. when you climb back up to the street after a long night, you feel you've been somewhere else.
good beers i thought but i'm a simple lager heathen - the bar staff were friendly and there was a sense of familiarity about it all rather than just being another customer.
perfect on a winter's night. hard to find i expect.
