Paid another visit recently, this time on a Saturday night. Pretty popular with the student crowd, plus a few older couples and older unaccompanied men. It made me feel quite old amongst all the youngsters.
At the bar, I had Urban Fox by Bootleg Brewing Co, but unfortunately I made the mistake or resting my half empty glass on the bar for a minute and when I turned round it had been swiped and the contents disposed of by the over zealous barman. Attempts to get his attention failed due to the volume of the music.
Toilets are a bit unpleasant, graffiti all over the doors.

Bootleg Lawless, bootleg Urban Fox 2.90 decent pint, Joseph Holt Golden Ale, Robinsons Trooper, Rosies Pig (Cider). A few decent looking keg beers on (including bootleg IPA), Friels cider, and Crystal Gold. Quite a few beers in the fridge from 'around the world). Happy hour on 2-8 monday- friday. The place itself is actually smaller than I thought. It's still a reasonably big room of a place. The layout of tables is also a bit strange and chaotic almost. Has beer mats taped above the bar, not the most interesting of interiors. A bit more of a studenty place. Not as dark or dingy as I thought it might be. Has a pringle machine incase you get hungry. Quite relaxing music playing in the background when I was in, can also feel the vibrations from the train tracks above. Probably nit bad for a reasonably priced pint during happy hour, don't think I'd hang around though. Also has a 'vegan drinks list'
I walk past this place quite a lot but this is the first time I have been in. My first impression was that it wasn't as big or dark as I was expecting it to be. It's still a reasonably big room of a place, the layout of the tables and seats was a bit odd though. When I was in they had- Bootleg Lawless, Bootleg Urban Fox, Joseph Holt Golden Ale, Robinsons Trooper as the ales and Rosies Pig as a cider. There's some interesting keg beers including Friels Cider, Bootleg IPA and Crystal Gold lager from Joseph Holt. I went for the Bootleg Urban Fox which was a pretty decent drink and well kept and cost 2.90 so was an alright price. They have a happy hour on from Monday- Friday at 2-8pm on those days. The music they were playing was quite relaxing when I was in. This is a bit more of a studenty place but I would say it's worth a visit for a reasonably priced pint.

Been many years since I have set foot inside the Thirsty Scholar - and a recent wait for a train seemed like the ideal opportunity to put that right.
Available on the hand pumps - Greene King IPA, Robinsons Trooper, Black Coral Stout (Hornbeam), Rosie's Pig Cider, and one pump was off.
I had a pint of the Black Coral Stout at £2.85, service was quick, the pint was good. A handful of other customers in at the time of my weekday visit (around 5:30pm) and had no issue finding a seat.
Was surprised how pleasant the experience was - I would recommend this pub.

Enjoyed going into this pub and had a few nice pints of Old Rosie cider. A dark but quirky little pub which was serving a vegan menu when I went (not sure if this is all the time) but I didn't eat in here. Would go back again. Good pub.

Tucked under a viaduct, this cool little joint has a lot going for it. There are live bands and there are DJs not playing the usual rubbish, but things which are somewhat different- there was a ska night on when we were there and it wasn't overpowering- there is a little paved area outside where you can relax and drink and the place is open until 3am with no hassles from over-zealous bouncers.....beers are varied- prices astronomical.

Never really been a fan of this place! Best left alone in my opinion.

Starting September 19th - INNER CITY BLUES - live music from The 8 Ball Blues Band, with Martin The Mod spinning blues and R&B vinyl. Plus Martin's jumpin' hot Jambalaya! All for FREE!!!!! 8 til late

The scholar is ace!!!!!!!!!

I have been living in Manchester city centre for 10 years now and have been visiting the thirsty scholar regularly since moving here. This has to be my favourite pub by far! The live music mid week is excellent and showcases a whole range of acts, while the dj's on the weekend really get the place movin! The night time atmosphere is unrivalled!! They have a wide range of beers and spirits and the prices are not too bad. I highly recommend you try it. Also the large outdoor smoking area is a must!

Sunday Night DJ is ace - Rock/Metal played all night. Has the hostile and Northern Alternative nights on at the Attic and other nights too...

A bit dark and dank. The beer wasn't up to much when we went and the jukebox decided to play tracks that we hadn't selected. Told the bloke behind the bar but no refund. Seems to be unsure what kind of pub it wants to be, but currently isn't the kind of pub I'd like to visit again.

Could be fair to call it a student hangout, but nothing like the fallowfield-type scream pubs. went on a friday, great soul tunes- agree with the lovely vibe!!

I got taken here by my 27 yr old aunty and its so bizarre. Very relaxed and some of the furniture looks like it from a porn film!
Toilets are ok-but still gross!
Juke box is pretty good and the drinks are priced fairly cheap.

Check out CHIPS'n'GRAVY every wednesdasy at Thirsty Scholar. This live music night's been going some time, and it offers some truly fantastic acoustic acts, bands and DJs. It's free to get in, and the music is always excellent standard which means it is usually full to bursting point. If you don't like crowded pubs, you'd do well to get there quite early as it gets real busy from 11pm onwards. The atmosphere is fantastic tho.

1 - Salisbury 2 - Grand Central 3 - Thirsty Scholar...
Good DJ on Sundays but this is how the three pubs will ALWAYS be ranked :)

Cramped and stressful. Not my favourite pub. However, if you've got to choose between this and the nearby Grand Central, there's no competition. There are much better pubs nearby, though.

I've never really liked this pub - the layout is terrible and it can get very smoky.
