A year and a bit on from last review, nothing much has changed - just the prices. Friendly enough, but not worth going out of your way for.

Looks a bit souless from the outside and did not seem much better when i went in. More books than Waterstones everywhere. Inside walls were white once, now just grubby. The beer was ok, Bravo Single hop £3.00.

Nice basic local and friendly with it. Easily the most pleasant pub at the his end of town. Ales were not to my taste but were in good condition and well priced.

The Duke of York is a backstreet pub, not too far from the centre of Salisbury with a decent real ale selection. Buntingford Twitchell & Partridge, Oxfordshire Marshmellow & Detox & Ringwood Forty Niner. The Good Beer Guide promises real cider. But both of the ciders on the bar were unavailable. So, this would seem to be a seasonal offering only.

What a shame as we were really looking forward to our first visit to this recommended pub to find it shut at a time we thought it should be open i.e. around 4pm on a Saturday
|
Visited early on a Saturday evening. Only a few customers but made very welcome. Very basic, traditional, pub. Landlord took time out to ask how four blokes had heard of his establishment and have a short chat.
Excellent beer, could only stay a short while. Would definitely go back.

Repeat visit today June 13 saw the pub quite busy, 5 beers on were Botley Old Cooperage, Sharaday Five Bells, Downton Eurohop and Boondogle. Tried last 3, all were in good nick and just 3 pint. Def one of the better cask ale pubs in Salisbury.

Went in on Sat night and was very impressed indeed with the pub. The Landlord was very knowledgeable about the beers on (Moorhouse Premier, Alton Triple fff Pride, Plain Ale Innocence, Botley Old Cooperage & Botley Pale Rider). They also sold two ciders on handpull (from wales?) and a German wheat beer. Pub was packed, locals seemed a friendly bunch. One of the best real ale pubs in Salisbury.

Great find, hidden away down a residential street within 10 mins walk of station. Amazing selection of real ales. Very little decor but what there is, is trad English pub. Highly recommended.

Good to see a pub in the style of a real back street boozer offering a good choice of real ale, Mat the owner welcomes you in and is very friendly. Worth a visit for those who love good Real Ale and not John Smiths!!!

This pub has just reopened. Five real ales, two real ciders and a selection of lagers. Matt the landlord is a local boy but has been running pubs in Southampton in the recent past. The pub and its toilets are clean and freshly decorated. Matt and the locals are friendly. Everyone is welcome. Well worth a visit. I hope the initial promise continues.

Matt the new landlord tells me he plans to open the end of June.

Being refurbished to become a straight pub serving real ales and unusual lagers, the Landlord tells me he hopes to reopen in June.

Its very, very closed :(

Its a lovely pub! Friendly atmosphere, worth a visit!

Sunday night is deff the best time to go, especially if ur into singing and seeing a celebrity. yes thats right Damon Scott, runner up in britains got talent 2007- the guy with the monkey- is running the karaoke!!
The place is nice and theres a friendly atmosphere... even if the decor is a bit bizarre (like headache mansion on harry hills tvburp)
add this to your pub crawl! its a fun little place... and you WILL be ID'd

This pub is like a large front room of somebody's house. Dredfull decor, nothing matches. The most uncomfortable seating and its truely dire. We managed one pint then enough was enough! Do youself a favor and bus to Bournemouth or Southampton so you can enjoy a 'gay' pint without driving.
|
have to say that the pub has a really nice crowd and they are very diverse. The pub has evolved as although there are 300 gay men in salisbury they rarely support the local pub. Therefore the pub has opened its doors to more and more straight people who like the safe enviroment and appreciate the money that has been spent on it.

Bar staff are friendly most of the time, although the management seem a little pretentious.
I went to the pub when visiting friends and when I was waiting to be served, one of the bar staff (Scott?) was arguing with a punter over their policy to make the pub more straight friendly. Err, isn't it a gay pub? The flag flying over the door combined with the staff's comments seemed a little contradicting. Apart from the managers lipiness, I had a really good time and the locals were really friendly.
If it wasn't for the staff's attitude I would have given a 6 or 7 rating. As it stands I am only willing to give a 3 until I see an improvement with the staff.

The Duke is tucked away down a sidestreet, about 5 minutes walk from the city's railway station. It is Salisbury's main (only?) gay venue. Ideal if you're gay, but don't be put off if you're not! Very swish interior, pool table, good music. Never any trouble, ideal if you are having an affair and want to be an "incognito" couple for the evening. Hey! Who's gonna admit they saw you in there?? Great bar, friendly regulars, attentive staff.Doesn't open during the day. Very tight on age, you will be carded, similarly, does not have under-age prats. If you're confident of your own sexual orientation, be that straight, gay or bi-, you have no excuse not to add this to your Salisbury crawl.
