Clips facing forward, but no ale. Tragic this used to be a Firkin.

Quite simply one of the worst pubs I have ever has the misfortune to visit. Only ended up there because our match at Crawley was cancelled with an hour before kick off. There were three ales, none of them interesting and not one of them was on. Had to make do with Guinness. Did not think much of the décor or the ambience. At least there was soap in the toilets.

Benn refrubed since the above pic - looks like a typical Marstons Pubco job. Not bad but not great either and still a few of the past 'unsavoury' elements haunting the place. The Marstons EPA was 1.89 a pint.

Keep out from this "Mickey Mouse" of a pub.

Just love the Railway.. Only have a few guest ales but the food is to die for.. Such a brilliant pub with friendly staff and regulars.

This is a good old fashioned pub with great staff and a wide range of drinks. They do a small range of real ales on the pump, the ones we had were very well kept. At first glance the menu looks like cafe food BUT we had the mixed grill and it was superb. The steak was perfectly cooked and you could see the high meat content in the sausages. The drinks and food are very reasonably priced. The pub is clean and has a very friendly atmosphere. I would go as far as to say it is the best pub I have been to in Crawley.

never changes it is what it is !

I have seen some good bands in her recently, and the staff are fair and quick. There is no real ale, but they do sell a range of bottled beers from smaller breweries, so not a complete desert.

the decor has been updated and looks really modern and from a girl's point of view - very pretty, ha!

it's definitely changed in the clientele for young people though. but still worth going along to for a drink on a weekday.

I remember The Rocket as a great place to socialise in the early 70's. Fred and Lesley were great hosts. Steve Cheesman - where are you? Would love to get in touch. No bands then but plenty of raids from a nice (not) man in blue called Lipscombe???!!! Plenty of beer, food and good company. Wish I was able to visit it again. Aussierock

weekdays, a nice quiet place to have a drink. on a friday it just isn't the same as the clientele have changed, and not the same atmosphere anymore. though i'm only 22 been going to this pub for 3 years now and definitely notice it change.

Prefered the place when it was the sleazy old Rocket but was good when it was a Firkin and run by Rob.

Now I just go there coz the beers cheap. Bands have gone down Hill and doesn't have much of an atmosphere anymore. But where else in the town is there to go... there all crap!!!

I used to work at The Rocket in the early 70's. Anyone remember or know the whereabouts of Steve Cheesman, Animal or Fred and Les (who used to run the pub), please let me know. I'd love to catch up with them for a chat. Many thanks from Australia

This pub is a dive! Used to be a great rock venue when it was The Rocket...now its a nameless, faceless hovel-filled with the clones that Crawley is famous for. The atmosphere is 'beige' at its best. Boredom guaranteed...visit if you enjoy being ignored by the bar staff, having practically no choice of beer and staring at orange walls!
Bring back The Rocket!

I don't go out very much in Crawley but when I do I go to the Railway really friendly pub, no trouble, you can relax. Food is excellent. Music if fantastic. See for yourself Saturday 5th November Cotton Candy Killer rock band - fantastic.

This used to be such a good pub when it was The Rocket...now its just the same as everywhere else and its soooooooooooooooooo F***ing dull...
ericthefisch - 29 Sep 2005 18:27
Yeah yeah yeah... *it's a druggies pub*... big deal... at least you knew you could go there, drink in a friendly atmos and NOT get your head kicked at closing by some *Trevor* in a Ralph Lauren shirt 'cos *you looked at him funny*. The only pub in the town centre SOUTH of the tracks and has a strong live band culture...
digyerownhole - 29 Apr 2005 10:35
British rock-band The Cure used to play in this pub in the late 1970s. It was called The Rocket at the time.

has a bad rep, but is a good place to go chill out. very lively on friday nights, everyone's friendly.

This started life as the Station Hotel until the station got moved 100 yards down the tracks, then it was the Rocket, then a Firkin with its own brewery. As the Rocket it was the druggie pub of the area, and you would get customers conversing about new veins that they'd found to use. Not so in-your-face now.

Infrasound are the best band to have ever played in this place and seem to be somewhat of a resident band here. They rock big time and i would urge anyone to check them out if they're passing. Classic..
Dave Barone - 28 May 2004 18:03
Claim to fame: I believe that The Cure played their first proper gig here.
Vindaloo - 20 Aug 2003 09:58
Used to be a great pub.
Post refit it was still rocking.
Now ?
Trav - 15 Jul 2003 16:13
Still plays rock and at least there is still one bar left that isn't for the trendy fraternity.
azur - 10 Jun 2003 13:55
It's my local and I love it - good friendly staff, nice facilities and the spirit of the old Rocket lives on.

Probably one of the best pubs in town, but then again that is not saying much when up against the Rat & Parrot (impossible to get served) and the Old Punch Bowl (lives up to its name). If you like rock its the place to head to. Beer good.

Haunt of Crawley's pierced-gums and sweat-caked-Slipnot-Tshirt brigade. I once vomitted by the pool table, but that was probably cleaned up when the place was refurbished. They tried to turn it into a towny boy gaf a year back and failed.
