Went in this pub recently and thought I had walked onto the the set of 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'. Wierd.

Awful pub. God knows when it was last cleaned, it had a horrible musty smell, there were cobwebs everywhere and a former strip light above the bar was a disgusting shade of nicotine brown. My husband told me the gents toilets were the most grubby he'd ever seen - cold, paint peeling off the walls and yet more cobwebs. There was no food being served which I'm thankful for given the look of the place. The barmaid looked thoroughly miserable, not surprising really, I'd hate to work there. I had a small bottle of wine, not cheap, and my husband tried the local real ale which he described as 'satisfactory'. Hay is a pretty town with many visitors but it is let down by pubs like this. Whoever runs the place clearly has no regard for regular custom and relies solely on public holidays and tourists. Plenty of other pubs in the town so you'd be wise to avoid this one.

What appears as a very cosy pub full of character is quickly let down by the service. I'm not sure if it was the actual owner but the barmaid seemed more interested in being sat down on her phone rather than serving customers. We were greeted with a rather blunt "What d'you want?" and I'm sure if she tried to smile her face would crack. As for the beer - a real ale, it was quite good, but I noticed a couple of the lagers were not on and the only other choice was bottled beer. I'm staggered at the sheer complacency in this day and age when so many good pubs are closing. Plus the fact their was no food available it's amazing this pub is still open. Incidentally, we were the only people in there for a good hour. Pretty much summing up the popularity of the place.

Looks lovely from the outside, but thats as good as it gets.
Landlord told us he was off to walk his dog so couldnt serve for 10 minutes. Told they dont do food (not a big deal in itself) so we asked if we could eat some of our own stuff. After much firing up of cogs in his head, he said yes, but we had to go to the back of the pub, so as not to give others the impression he was doing food (the place was empty and the weather utterly miserable, so he wasnt going to much passing trade).
The one ale he had was off (he warned me before trying it - why not just change the barrel ffs?) and his answer to 'do you have any j2o' was 'I can do you some orange and top it with lemonade'.
Its a shame when pubs are closing down left, right and centre to have a potentially lovely place being run by someone who, despite being friendly enough, could not really give a toss whether his pub lives or dies.

Very busy on a warm Sunday afternoon, with locals spilling out onto the pavement, good friendly atmosphere and an excellent pint.

Liked this pub, didn't see any food but very relaxing and nice atmosphere.

Traditional pub,lots of beams and roaring fire in the winter.No food served but dogs are allowed.Used by locals and walkers/ramblers alike.Real ale served aswell as guinness on draught and all the usual lagers.Great selection of whiskey and bourbon.

Very old,popular with walkers,occasionally serves food, good atmosphere
