The Saxon Arms has a strange location in a newly-built part of this village north-west of Dorchester. But the juxtaposition of old and new works well. The pub was extremely busy on my weekday lunchtime visit. Most people were there for lunch and there was a 45 minute wait for tables. There was a fair wait for bar service too. Ales were mainly national brands - Butcombe Bitter, Greene King Abbot, Sharps Doom Bar & Timothy Taylor Landlord. But they did also have Orchard Pig Philospher on a handpull.

Very nice foody pub. Thatched roof and picturesque. Plenty of parking. Very popular on the evening we visited. Enjoyed the food and the ales very much and the service was excellent. Dogs were made welcome too. Nothing to complain about at all and is well worth a visit if you are in the Dorchester area.

been several times and always had a pleasant experience.Food has always been well cooked & presented and staff are both friendly and efficient. It does have a bit of a "chain" atmosphere but is well laid out and reasonably priced for the area.

Visited here a few times over the years so looked forward to a return. Nice, well laid out pub in a lovely Dorset village seems very popular judging by the number of diners on a midweek lunchtime. Timothy Taylor Landlord in average condition, but the visit was let down by a poor quality meal. New potatoes not properly prepared (bad bits not cut out) and no taste- tasted like yesterday's reheated, and a very chewy yorkshire pud. Won't be back again in a hurry.

We have eaten and drunk here several times and it had always been excellent except for when we called in for Monday lunch. The food was obviously (and confirmed by the staff) Sunday's left over roast heated up. It was very poor (dried, stuck to the plate, etc) and we haven't been back since - this was in 2006/7. Pity because before this we would have given it 10 out of 10.

I totally agree with he other reviews here - fantastic true pub. Good food, well kept good beer and fine wines. Even if you don't eat there, treat yourself to the cheese board between two. My only complaint - the "chain-pub" style menu - don't let it put you off though. Well recommended!
