Hello everyone,
This pub is now shut. There was a pile of envelopes that could bee senn behind the glass door. It amazed me that this place was allowed to stay open for so long - it was filthy!
The sad thing is that if it had kept clean and spruced up, it would have remained the atmospheric 60's style student pub it once was. Another victim of bad management and the recesssion?
Another one bites the dust!

This place is awful. It hasn't seen a paintbrush in decades. Nor has it troubled the hygiene industry much over the period. The toilets are a disgrace.
If you dedide to ignore my advice and venture down the steps for a drink, here's a tip. Either stand, or grab one of the stools that has had its upholstery stripped off. It may be uncomfortable, but it will avoid the smell of Aikmans sticking to your clothing.

This pub was unhygienic in the extreme, peeling wallpaper, sticky, filthy tables, soft furnishings full of holes and covered with stains, the staff were scruffy and for the most part extremely surly. They used pretty bad language, too. There was no handwash in the loos and a stink coming from the gents. The place was really, really dirty and i'd not advise anyone to go in here especially if you have young children or elderly people with you because, frankly, they'd probably catch something within the first five minutes of being inside. Why this place calls itself a wine bar i have no idea because the wine was absolutely disgusting, i'd be surprised if they even spend 60p per bottle of the stuff they buy in. Really disappointing experience all round

If your idea of a fun night out is being surrounded by a bunch of angst-ridden, 6th year poets then this is the place for you. Abysmal service, tasteless food, all round grim decor and an inability to understand the importance of ice in a drink makes this bar a throw back to the 70's. Yes it does have a selection of good beers but that doesn't remove its obligation to have toilets that don't make you gag - Avoid at all costs!

Good for the belgian beers but bad for cask ales. pipes for the cask beers seem not to be cleaned leading to unpleasant aftertaste. Range not so great, restricted to thick sweet Scotch type beers from th likes of orkney. A very popular town centre pub split between two levels. upstairs is an open european style cafe bar with a good selection of cake and other cooked food available. downstairs a very dingy basement bar, which is not as smokey as was thanks to the ban but still can be unpleasant at peak times. Attracts a very leftfield clientele, live ethno-jock music only for the fan thereof in the week. Music on the speakers seems always to be just that bit too loud for relaxed conversation. would recomend a visit early doors before it gets too packed.

best beer in town ... worst toilets

Great range of lagers and beers: everyone should be happy with the beer here. Some of the guest beers are from smaller breweries, so be prepared to take pot luck.
The downstairs bar may be too smokey (and hot) for some.

Wide array of foreign (pricey) beers, but also a reasonable whisky selection. Nice atmosphere, seemed to have plenty events going on.

The best stocked bar in town, particularly for bottles of foreign beers. Also very helpful and obliging staff. I recall a friend of mine asking if they had any J&B whiskey, which he had been inspired to start drinking after watching 'American Psycho'. They didnt have any, but the next time we were in there, they did, they'd ordered in a bottle since we'd asked for it. How cool is that? The selection of beers does vary, but theres bound to be something decent, dark, strong and foreign for you to spend the night with. There should be more pubs like this.

A truly excellent selection of European beers, which is regularly updated to keep you on your toes. An extremely welcoming atmosphere with an airy upstairs area with a few couches and a cosy downstairs 'cellar' which feels like you're below deck on a ye olde style boat. Also a pleasingly friendly and amateur (in a good way unless you're in a rush) approach to customer service.
The only pub in St Andrews which seems to cater for everyone - long may it prosper!

This pub is by far the most outstanding by way of catering for its customers in St Andrews. With live music during the week and at weekends one can sit back and enjoy their favourite tipple. A beer lover's heaven with fine beers from all over Europe. This pub has the latest licence in town closing at 1.00am every night of the week. A great place to go chill out in, catch up with friends, take in a bit of culture in the form of poetry readings, gigs and open mic nights, and generally it's a great place to get merry in!
