Clarence, New Brightonback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
We recently visited The Clarence for the second time, this time with a friend who is somewhat of a regular and in the habit of chatting up the very pretty barmaid, so a lot of good humoured banter arose. The Otter Ale was good enough to persuade us to refill our glasses several times. We got into conversation with two other gentlemen about professional diving opportunities in the South China Sea, so don't let people tell you that the locals only talk about football.

Bar to one side and a lounge the other that kind of telescopes out in to a bigger room and then an even bigger one behind it. A mix of clinetelle including a few old folk, some goths and the odd mid range person that frequents the 'Marley's' chain of stores (they have a few branhces on the Wirral). Three ales on, of which I had a pleasant enough pint of Copper Dragon.

This pub is a little larger than it looks from the outside. There is a small bar to the right as you enter and another similar sized section to the left opens up to another couple of sections down a couple of steps. Two different TVs offered different sporting options (rugby & football). 3 real ales were available - Sharps Doom Bar, Deuchars IPA & Mayfields Spring Target. A fourth handpull was not being used.

Large suburban boozer with a rustic feel about it. Two rooms, a large lounge on spit levels and a vault/games room served by an island bar. The games room had handsome wood panelling around the pool table and is the more characterful of the rooms as the lounge is a bit barn-like. Youngs bitter, Peerless triple blonde and Weetwood Eastgate Ale made up the selection on my visit, a couple more pumps were turned round- a modest selection, but locally sourced.
Local crowd like most pubs in the area.
Close to New Brighton railway station so easy to reach and a good starting point for a real ale crawl.

A wood panelled tardis! A deceptively comfortable and welcoming real ale pub, but what is obviously a community boozer as well. The home made food (including their chips!) was very reasonably priced, as was the ale - daily changing, completely independent guests at �2.45. A very impressive array of continental bottled lagers was on offer, including Erdinger, Pauliner, Leffe, Warsteiner etc. This is an Enterprise pub doing its damnest from what I can see to retain its own character. Not known to many, this pub also boasts an attractive beer garden, which is far more than just a smoking den.
Closest pub to New Brighton Railway station makes it the obvious starting point for any local pub crawls - real ale based or not.

I'm in 2 minds whether to rate this pub because it is rare you find such a hidden gem, & I think I want to keep it a secret. On the face of it, this is an insignificant back street pub. However once through the door this is my equivalent of the moment in the film where Charlie enters the chocolate factory. What seems like a relatively small pub opens into a catacomb of clean, well kept rooms with classy wooden decor & for the first time in my life I noted the clean smell - Sorry you traditionalists, but this just reinforces the excellent smoking ban for me. I was lucky enough to visit during their beer festival & went out into the marquee in the well kept suntrap of a beer garden to sample their delights. At this point I was in danger of becoming Augustus Gloop but managed to limit myself to 3 excellent pints of Otter Bitter, Hambleton Stud & Daleside Blonde. Proper pubs like this are rare & luckily you do not need a golden ticket to get in. Please support this establishment & their superb staff. If Carlsberg made pubs it would be nothing like this. Nuff said!
