A down to earth pub in an area you would no longer expect to find one - consider that the Mitre nearby has been completely refurbished to a trendy modern standard. Beer was Black Sheep Best which was good. Decor is oldfashioned and somehow nostalgic.

We tried Green Jack Trawlerboys Best Bitter, but it was off and was replaced. The Sharp’s Doom Bar was its usual excellent self and served in a Doom Bar glass should you forget what you are drinking. Dutiful bar service (so no more nor less than can be expected in London). Plain pub with bare floorboards, which judging by the bar furniture was once much more ornate. The best bit of the building is the old Charrington’s tile frontage. By the bye, if you like these things, there is a rare K2 telephone kiosk nearby in Princedale Road at the junction with Holland Park Avenue.

This pub has improved so much under the current management. Beer selection and quality is top notch and the staff are quick & knowledgeable. If there's a criticism its that the music can at times be too loud
Has a changing selection of excellent beers, every visit an agreeable surprise. Staff courteous and efficient, premises disordered but clean (especially toilets). Decor could be improved, and sometimes there's too much din from the music, which makes conversation difficult. One puts up with that for the beer, which is what we're really after. In August: Doombar, Northern Star, but especially the pure magic of Whispa. The pub has spirit - a lot of young clients, sometimes exuberant but never unruly.

We made the Castle our regular during a recent stay in London. Great food and drink, good service and a relaxed atmosphere. Well worth a visit.
This pub has now got it spot on. Good and ever changing beer choice, well kept and served by staff who know what they are doing
Good selection of beers (when they are all on)and well kept but be prepared to wait to be served by some of the worst bar staff in West London
Good pub with a selection of ales, 4, plus a huge range of continental and American beers. Surprisingly well priced for the location, 2.95 for a pint of Doombar. Food was reather good too.
This pub sells an impressive-looking range of ales but they've absolutely no idea how to keep them, and the staff are all half asleep. If you want to pay 3.40+ for a pint of vinegar, after waiting 15 minutes for service, drink here. Alternatively go to the wonderful Mitre further up Holland Park Avenue or visit their much classier namesake, The Castle in Portobello Road.

Mrs Kid_b and I came here one evening after work and were not unimpressed. The selection of ales was more than adequate, including Doombar and Harvey's Sussex Bitter. There were also some continental quaffables on offer including Fruli, and a couple of ciders including at least one 'proper' scrumpy (Aspalls) as well as the obligatory apple-lager that often passes for cider nowadays.
The service lacked nothing in courteousness and food-wise we couldn't complain: nicely cooked fish & chips that was a cut above most boozer grub without being overly pretentious.
Having music in a pub sometimes spoils the atmosphere, but when it's the likes of The Smiths as was the case here, it'd be churlish to grumble.
Without a doubt the best boozer in Holland Park. Excellent selection of strong euro lagers and hand pulled beers. Open `til midnight most nights. Attracts the usual lap topped city types after work but very much a local pub after 9 ish. Worth a visit for sure.

Good pub, great beer & ciderselection but badly let down by the bar staff
First visit here, interesting range of eclectic beers and surroundings, Had a pint of Fuller's seasonal Summer Ale which was light and refreshing. Service...well the guy seemed to resent being drawn away from his newspaper and my change was slapped down onto the counter....so not good!! There are plenty of other decent pubs in the area....it's worth walking on to the Churchill on Church Street a busy pub which manages to retain a high level of service and a good pint!
Had an interesting Nutty beer which was nice. Service is variable though.
On a quite Tuesday night the bar staff seemed to be having trouble holding everything together - I can't imagine what it is like when busy. The beer selection was unforgettable, with the most interesting choices being the keg Pilsner Urquell and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. As you can probably tell I was not overly impressed. A shame, because it is a nice pub in an area that is lacking in good beer.
Here a few weeks back and decent enough pub in pleasant location.....evening marred however by my colleague's bag being stolen by some lifestyle interface scumbag.
I like this pub and have been four or five times over the past few months, both in the evenings and occasionally at lunchtimes as I work close by. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere's good. BUT - and this has become a running joke - the food is truly dire. One evening six of us all ordered food, and everything *everything* arrived with a blackened tinge, and tasting of charcoal. Since then, we've always had a good laugh as meal after meal is served burnt and over-cooked. It's the only place I've ever had crunchy steak.
It started off as quite funny, and remains a joke amongst my friends and colleagues, but unfortunately, after so many chances, we're going to have to find another place to eat.
Nice pub, shame about the chef!

Not a large pub, and therefore seems crowded even on a quiet night. Good range of draught lagers and other imported beers. Only two handpumps, and only one working on both this visit and the previous one. Good service, and the prices were not a high as I was expecting.
Great layout, decent rotation of ales, friendly bar staff, _awful food_. I'm in there once or twice a week. The monday night pub quiz is very good. The music isn't very noticeable over the bar noise. I try and avoid the place on Fridays as the place becomes overrun by tossers. Open until midnight! Every once and awhile they try and do something new like an acoustic or DJ set. It doesn't usually stick but at least they try.
Nice place but annoying that even on the Tuesday night I went nearly every table was booked. Besides that I like it. Nice light front room, nice dark back one. Nice and close to the tube. Shame that there's only one ale on, but good choice of wine and lagers.
very nice relaxed pub light music and enjoyable enviroment, great section on food and most of all drink!
Nice pub near Holland Park Underground. Quick service and helpful staff. I didnt find the furniture very appealing, though. (worn-out, should have been replaced) But the place was OK for a quick meal and a pint under subdued light prior to the QPR-match.
Nice and dark
Comfortable, attractive, relaxed and popular pub. Only one real ale available - Bass.
Good food, friendly staff and a chilled out atmosphere. What more could you ask for?Great DJ, adds that extra edge that makes this pub well worth checking out.I look forward to my next visit!

I went to this pub with a group of 11 friends for dinner last night and received absolutely the worst service I can remember!! The waitress was totally rude and managed to muck up one meal, insult several people and refuse to take back and change the wrong orders. When we asked for the manager we were told there was no manager working and that we weren't getting our money back! BEWARE!!!

It's a very comfortable atmosphere with a great selection of beers (Hogarden is the best!) on tap. The food is a little expensive, but it's bar food in gourmet form. The sofas are very cushy and you're surrounded by beautiful mahogny wood and candles. They even have a fireplace that is constantly burning in the winter. The people are your typical younger rich/business types but not at all elitest. Great place to go!

Wicked bar area with lots of comfy sofas and low seating. Loads of really cool beers- belgian beers on tap, duvel in the fridges etc., My friends and I discovered it last night and the atmosphere was awesome! We ordered some food & the chicken & bacon parpadelle was brilliant, the calamari was fairly priced and delivered in a generous portion. You MUST try this bar out, I know that I'll be back very soon!!
