Called in here as it looked like the most inviting pub in the area, and you pretty much know what you're going to get with a large Wetherspoons. Went for a pint of Yates of Cumbria Golden at 3.9% which set me back the grand sum of £1.90. I think this must be the cheapest pint I have had in a long time. The ale itself was fine, the pub was pleasant enough if a little sterile. Plenty of seating though.

Unfriendly staff, who threatened to ban 2 seemingly respectable customers while I was watching, for complaining about the temperature of the beer, after telling them to drink somewhere else if they didn't like it - seemed very excessive. Seemed to take ages to get served. They'd ran out of wine glasses so served it in a half pint glass, also refused to serve a bottle of wine after 10.00 incase the four of us hadn't finished by the time they closed. Food tepid, typical Wetherspoons offering. One to avoid.

Typical JDW conversion close to the railway station. A good selection of real ales and lots of Cumbrian beers available last Saturday. All beers tried were in good condition and the staff were efficient & friendly.

Staff are hard working, helpful and friendly. Beers - always 10 guests - are good - well-conditioned in the cellar. Big emphasis on beers brewed in Cumbria - supplied direct to the pub. Lately: Yates, Cumbria Legendary Ales, Derwent, Geltsdale, Ulverston and coming soon Hawkshead.
One of the best Wetherspoons anywhere and certainly the best pub in Whitehaven.
Almost opposite the station.

I found this Whitehaven Wetherspoons decent enough, i would go again!

As has been said "Wetherspoons is Wetherspoons". I remember my 1st experience of the pub brand way back when in Wolverhampton and it was aweful. This isn't and is the meeting place the young and old of the town - nights out on a weekend tend to start here but other less popular times are good also. Don't rate the food much but thats a taste thing and mine only and not my idea of a good range to be offered. They aren't really pubs, definitely more of rendevous points where I've hadmany a pleasant drink.

Just to update, I still agree with what I posted in 2004. The best place to go in Whitehaven.

Now serving 15 different real ales, always in tiptop condition - there's no point in going anywhere else!
|
True enough, Wetherspoons branded. Still most people seem to start the night there and many never leave. Best selection of beers in area (check your CAMRA guide!) and cheap as chips.
|
Wetherspoons is Wetherspoons so if you like cheap warm real then this is place for you. They cannot be classed as pubs, more of rendevous points for meeting to meet before going to real pubs, with atmospheres.

Lovely bar with the best selection of real ales i've seen in a pub for a long time. clean, warm, friendly staff and good food make it a must if you visit the town.

A first class pub. The best in Whitehaven if you like real ale. Ever changing range of beautifully kept guest beers, always worth a trip down to see what's on. Great service, clean loos, good food.
