Better than most Wetherspoons even if nothing truly interesting on tap - decent enough ales but all much of a muchness. The building is a half timbered gem and the location on Berkhamsted's main street is good - but only go if you want you money to help fund the senseless Brexit campaign via the company founder's political funding peccadilloes.

A really excellent Wetherspoons'. For me, the beer quality consistently out performs the hightly rated Rising Sun. Has made a deserved return to the Good Beer Guide for 2014.

This is a great pub. The beer is well kept and low priced, lovely historic building. Food is JDW..its cheap, its OK. But the overall experience is excellent, well worth a visit. Very busy at weekends.

Had a couple of beers here this weekend: one from the Marlow and one fro mthe Gloucestershire brewery. An interesting range on offer and seemed well kept - although not all the pumps were in active use and my first two choices turned out not to be available. Pleasant enough for a quiet tipple and prices good as usual (rare to have pints less than 2 down in the South).

Its a small frontage but can hardly be called a small pub, it goes back so far that you think youre in the next county by the time you reach the extent of its environs. The low ceilings, lack of natural light and a general lack of cleanliness give it a typical dreary JDW feel. There are two staircases that lead from either side of the bar up to the toilets that give a sense of going up to meet the hangmans noose as you ascend them. What this pub really has going for it is the range of beer, there are about 10- 12 hand pumps with some interesting beers and also some from the local Tring Brewery. So, go for the beer but little else, Ill visit again if in the area but I think if I saw half the pump clips turned around Id probably do the same.

I visited the pub today (6 June 2007) for lunch for the first time for many months. As usual with JDW an excellent range of Cask Ale, here served with full measures, super pricing and at the right temperature. It was a delight to have a Wetherspoon not serve ale at Arctic temperature.
The bar staff were cheerful and helpful (much much better than I found previously).
BUT, I found the lunch food terrible. The lamb shank was so overcooked that it was mostly inedible. I fear that it must have been left over and reheated at least once.
So, I found this to be a really good pub to drink in, but best eat somewhere else first!

This a Wetherspoon's pub. Quite an attractive one with quite a good atmosphere. Not quite your normal run of this chains pubs.
Smallish bar with low ceilings and timbered effect with plenty of seating. Toilets upstairs as usual!
Fairly quick service at the bar although one of the bar-maids seemed unable to speak! Food provided very quickly although it is the standard JDW menu.
We were here about 2 years ago and it does not seem to have altered much. Not too bad as JDW pubs go.

if you want a drink,do not go to this pub,the bar staff are as hard to find as an honest politician,ie extinct.
