user reviews of Essex Yeoman, Upminster

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Having looked at their website before visiting recently, I got the impression that this was Upminster's equivalent of a Wetherspoons. But I was wrong. Over the years I have been in some iffy JDW outlets, but nothing approaching as dire as the Essex Yeoman. It is very tired and shabby and in urgent need of a complete makeover. Three hand pumps but only Young's available, the Doombar and London Pride clips were both turned round. The Young's was just about drinkable, but I suspect that it wouldn't be long before that clip was turned round too. Add to that Sky Sports football commentary turned up to maximum volume …

Only been in twice before, however on my last visit got chatting to a few locals - friendly bunch which is rare - most pubs i've known to be hostile to new people. staff were good as gold too.

Glad you're happy upminsterbee.I'm sure Sue would disagree with you about having no personality. Also Chelsea is hilarious.

Erm... DESERVEDLY banned WTF you on about.???.
Was I starting a fight ??
was i a drug dealer?? (like quite a few i know who were or still are drinking there)
and
was i not, just having a converstion when rudely interupted and told "If i dont like it,dont come back".
Dam right i have a BEE in my bonnet...never given a reason WHY barred...thats bad.
Trust me...quite a few regulars there may think theyre welcome but...theyre not...Staff have no personalities what so ever its done me a favour in the end.
upminsterbee - 21 Oct 2010 18:17
Barnet fan obviously has a bee in his bonnet since being (deservedly) barred.
Can't think of anybody else barred since March.
The staff all seem perfectly friendly and helpful to me.
No problems with the beer (especially on Mondays at 1.60 a pint).
Good atmosphere with everybody mixing with everbody else.
Don't listen to the barred bee.

popped in the other day , first time in about 2 years and they have done it up, looks alot more lighter and spacious than it used to be , visited around 1pm on a weekday , wasnt very busy , only popped in for a couple of beers , had ipa on draught which was very drinkable , wasnt many customers when first arrived , by the time i left the local chav population were in playing pool and being loud and obnoxious (around 2pm) , the only member of staff who was behind the ramp was friendly enough

good pub , but let down by the patrons
romfordir - 20 Sep 2010 17:44
VERY unwelcoming..the old staff were great but the ones bought in esp the landlady are not welcoming at all
Wont be coming back with my family

barsofessexdrinker - 24 Aug 2010 17:43
The pub use to be great HOWEVER now taken over by the most unfriendly landlady and staff Iv EVER witnessed in a pub..NOT TO MENTION..BARRING REGULARS JUST COS SHE DONT LIKE THEM
(Witnessed severall times)
Food is CRAP
Atmosphere is CRAP
Jukebox is SO LOW IN VOLUME youre wasting your money
Beer is horrible..Not sure if they change theyre barrels as often as they should
BRING BACK...COL or SID or anyone but Brewery if you know whats good for the pub GET RID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My octogenarian in-laws went in here one wet Wednesday (the Crumpled Horn being too much of a walk) and waited 45 minutes for their food - which, to be fair, was quite nice - in what was an empty pub. The barmaid was having a snooze in an armchair. So, yes, it must be a pub for drinkers and I can understand anyone's wife hating it..
HornchurchJohn - 7 Dec 2009 15:04
This is a pub for drinkers, a place for relaxed binge drinkers and those that just want a quick pint or 5. Whilst it can be like the bar from star wars, just as in the film, everyone just minds their own business and drinks with friends. I love this pub, my wife hates it, which suits me just fine.
walkingthedog - 13 Nov 2009 21:46
got to say this is one of favourite pubs , i come from rainham to drink here , mainly due to the friendly staff , extremely good prices , good atmosphere .its a blindin pub alot better now than it used to be

upminsterbee - 2 Aug 2007 14:52
well after all the reviews with detail about the pub have been taken down and its turned in to the ingrid fan club board , i thought id say a few things about the pub , end of the tube line pub , not brilliant but does what its spose to , cheap food n drink , good staff , and good punters probably the best pub in upminster , but when you look at whats nearby its not a hard choice having this pub as best in upminster

it has gone downhill a bit lately , but dont think this has anything to do with the landlady leaving , think no one cares anymore which is a shame , with the right person at the helm this could be the best boozer around , still i consider this to be the best in upminster cheap cheerful and does what it says on the tin , was in there the other evening think i saw romfordir in there if he was the young guy playing the fruit machine by the bar , was quite busy but got served quick , some idiots playing pool but nothing untowards going on
anonymous - 17 Dec 2006 13:42
went in yesterday , still got the nice blonde girl behind the bar , and a new manager by the looks of things , the beer wasnt bad and still 2.05 a pint cant go wrong really
still best pub in upminster
romfordir - 14 Dec 2006 09:41
well im a regular and im still coming back for more when i get the chance the G man
romfordir - 22 Nov 2006 21:30
Contrary to The Truthmasters personal comments above, at this pub and others...
This pub and its staff are and were the best Ive ever experienced in many years of drinking both North and South.
Made me and my partner, feel so welcome in 8 months.
Searched severall pubs in the area when we moved there but the atmosphere (especially; Sunday night when the footys finished and the music goes on) is unbeatable.
My beers are ready for me without muttering a word (even in a busy spell).
In addition..the best pint of John Smiths around.
The landlady "Ingrid" was one of the nicest people Ive ever met.

In response to the above view
NO...the landladys kids are not running about all the time.
No...her partner is not always fighting (a reformed charactor over the short time I knew him and also sadly missed)
No,,,Certainly cant imagine any of the staff being rude when being asked for food etc.
Only one incident of trouble in all the time Ive been in,which was quickly sorted.

The landlady and severall staff are now sadly missed as shes moved onto pastures new abroad last week.
Having said that the relief managaer is also a breath of fresh air and a special mention to the staff that remained whove become good friends of ours
I just hope the locals keep coming and new visitors arent put off by comments above I simply cant beleive Im reading!!!

raboreham2 - 20 Nov 2006 23:47
i remember the ginger lady , now thats a landlady , but the thing is you go to a pub for a drink and with the yeoman you dont expect kids running around , my only gripe with the landlady is she is always too busy playing the quiz machine with her friends or helping the guy with a limp with his betting selection, i am a regular of this pub and i do like it , the staff are excellent and so is the landlady every so often , but her bad days well out weigh the good .
anonymous - 8 Nov 2006 11:12
i was one of many relief managers in the essex yeoman and i take my hat of to the landlady there its not easy doing that job plus being a full time mum aswell i dont know how she does it.so before you comment on her and the staff's performance think about the stresses that they get from there bosses ect. a very well run pub from open to close. from the ginger lady xxxxxxxxxx
crazylady - 30 Oct 2006 00:41
Not a bad place, good atmosphere. not a regular haunt though.
Spartakoos - 10 Oct 2006 20:53
visited yesterday and it wasnt overly busy around 15 people in there , but the manageress still seemed a bit put out to be dragged away from her paper to serve punters and she also seemed to into helping a bloke with his betting slips , beer wasnt bad and for under 2 quid a pint of fosters i couldnt complain , most probably the cheapest pub in upminster
anonymous - 11 Apr 2006 17:39
a good pub , used to be a grungers pub , but has changed a lot since then , still a rock orientated pub but full of suits and chavs , but they tend to leave you alone , cant forget the looky looky man that always seems to be there when i am , the staff are very friendly and know the job well , the beer is above average quality but about right price wise , use this pub a fair bit as like the atmosphere in here during the day , many a day off pub crawl has started here
romfordir - 7 Feb 2006 11:52
Looks shabby and dated especially when compared to the fantastic tapas place next door. Do not be tempted to pop in the Yeoman for a drink before or after.
anonymous - 16 Oct 2005 20:00
Average boozer
BinBagBob - 22 May 2005 12:16
Run of the mill pub, pretty expensive and the beer isn't well kept..the barstaff seem friendly enough when you can get them away from the one armed bandit to serve you!
Toilets are pretty cruddy but other than that its ok.

harlequin - 19 Apr 2005 01:20
Im not sure the low rating is entirely deserved. If we're honest, none of the pubs in upminster are amazing, why's this one so much worse than the others?
Ok, i agree the toilets DO honk quite a bit, and the view of the road, station and bins is far from breath-taking, but its got pool tables, TVs, a few beers, and ive had a few enjoyable drinks from the tables by the windows. After a couple, the view starts to grow on you.
Iceman - 16 Apr 2005 21:40
Usual chain watering-hole, only raised above the norm by the management. They do their best but due to the fact that this is an end of the tube line pub.....
Still have had some good evenings mid-week, Friday night is full of suits trying to prove they are still rebels! The staff do their upmost to cope with idiots, but be prepared to make allowances.
anonymous - 18 Mar 2005 22:26
A friendly pub with lots of regulars and nice bar staff. Traditional old style pub. Pool table and 3 televisions, not the kind of pub to go to if you want class but nevertheless I enjoyed myself when I went there
David - 23 Oct 2004 15:40
Gives a great view of the local tramps rummaging through the bins at the station. That's the best thing that can be said about it. There is a permanent fug of smoke in the bar, beer is expensive yet nasty, and despite an expensive refurb some years ago has toilets that would make a third world hovel proud - clothes pegs and boots advised.
Jon - 22 Oct 2004 12:26
Umm... this pub is as basic as it gets. Cheap functional pub but a bit grotty. Its very small but has pool table and several tv's.
I wouldn't plan to go here but have stopped in for a few as its right by the station.
