user reviews of Paragon, Chiswick

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I thought that Id actually have a stab at reviewing the pub rather than the staff and clientele.

First and foremost half a Carling costs 1 and I didnt spot any signs advertising a happy hour. There was an overpowering smell of disinfectant, but I didnt mind as my drink only cost 1. Lots of screens and football advertised on blackboards around the pub and a pool table is situated at the rear of the pub next to the back door emblazoned with fire exit signs. There are a few chairs and tables under a canopy on the pavement outside, but I dont think that there is a beer garden of such.

Its not the sort of pub that I wouldnt imagine having a coffee machine behind the bar, but it does and a couple ordered some and drank it with no complaint (unlike Shackology up the road).

The usual lager suspects are on offer alongside Strongbow, Courage Best and Directors (this is not an exhaustive list of the selection).

The Paragon is a little tatty around the edges, but if I lived in the area I would watch the football there.

Cheekyemmanuel - 4 Apr 2008 19:06
Well James I see you are upsetting every girl that comes near you!!!! Still leering over anything in a skirt or trousers aslong as its female! Are you still bald and fat? Still drinking heavily and smoking like a chimney? a freind of mine still reckons you are revolting I can think of stronger words!Anyway love to all and good luck in your next adventure I'm surre you will ruin it aswell as the rest if not better!!
blondie7 - 18 Mar 2008 19:04
judging from the comments below - no wonder this place is for sale!
Cokey - 25 Jan 2008 20:55
jane69 is only writing negative comments because she is now barred from the paragon and she is allegedly an ugly duckling. Her trade is now presumably appreciated elsewhere, where she can fit in with people more equal to her lowly social, moral and educational standards. P.s. James is a really nice guy

wtf happened to this pub? when paul was running it it was a fantastic friendly pub with a great choice of real ales, an excellent selection of real ales n good food. guess u take the best staff out when u decide to sell up n stick in the staff u want to loose but not sure they had to go to these depths!! note to the manager; stop sleezing on the customers! also stop thinking ur better than everyone, ur not. oh n the odd post from u singing the pubs praises doesnt fool anyone!

if i wish to stay up on my day off and take an interest in the comments about a venue that i use for a pint after working hard all week i will do so, i also have a right to comment on this site as its not here just for the managers use, who only seems to use it to post insults. If i am a tosser then im a tosser that uses this venue frequently. but after reading the managers comments i will now be taking my business along with my friends to the revolution who im sure have better customer service.
anonymous - 3 Sep 2007 18:30
Well if you've got to work so hard all week stop staying up till 1:19 in the morning posting pointless comments!
Surely you should be sleeping getting ready for your really "hard" week. Then if your nicely refreshed you'll enjoy your "hard earned" pint that bit more you tosser.

Are you really that bored Alison or is it because i wouldn't sleep with you, that you have to post comments about my business? Hows the nail business going for you? Why did you make up that story about me sleeping with you? I'm hardly a catch? Was it because you couldn't bare the thought of anybody else being happy when your so depressed and miserable with your pathetic, tedious existance? I've always wanted to know the answer to that. Hope your well. nice to hear from you again. Enjoy Chineham. x

aliceone - 28 Aug 2007 10:17
Smashing pub and a smashing governor! Beer festival this week was a true winner as was the excellent sunday roast. James is really doing wonders with this smashing pub. Will strive to drink there every night and share a cider or 25 with the boss.

If carlsberg did pubs, this would probably be the best pub in Chiswick!!

Ropey at best
ted_savage - 17 Jul 2007 14:57
The Paragon - I was in there the other day and thought it was ok however did feel that I was being watched or leered at the whole time by the manager James which made me feel uncomfortable so we had 1 drink and left. Service ok wine selection abit dated wouldn't go back alone.
anonymous - 6 Jul 2007 01:13
Wow, what an amazing transformation. Now the Paragon is back!! This truly is an excellent pub now. Award winning real ales and the most enourmous burgers i have ever seen. The landlord, James is brilliant bloke as are all his staff. This will be my new local for a while to come.
anonymous - 16 Apr 2007 17:57
Fat bearded lone man taking up a table for four quotient: high. Cute twenty-something sex-in-the-Paragon ladies popping in for a small Chablis or three: low. Shame that that nearly always tops my scale for best pubs ever, but there we go. I'm pathetic.

What the hell is "stripe info" when it's at home? Or when it's down the pub watching the football supping a nice ale for that matter? Point taken on the "low female front" though. Haven't seen many lovely lasses down there myself. With a low front or otherwise!
chopperbomb - 19 May 2006 19:08
You're just ticked off 'cos I didn't go out last night. By the way, if you're watching Sky and some dumbell throws up the wrong stripe info during a game of footie, blame Chopperbomb as it's his job to do that. And you can laugh heartily at his ineptitude as you watch it from the Paragon, which shows football and has beer. And is low on the female front, generally.

However, if you happen to like men kicking balls around a big green thing then this is a good pub. In fact, it's a decent place whether you like football or not. There is a good choice of lagers and ales that are different to your usual pub choice. Last night there were 4 ales on (although 3 of them ran out during the night!) and they have guest ones which change fairly regularly. Can't comment on the food but it looked alright. The atmosphere in here is pretty non-existent but it's a good size place with loads of seating. Floor to celing locking door in the Gents, thankyou please. The screens Ruby talks about are all decent plasmas plus there's a big screen for the big games. If Ruby doesn't like footy then he should just avoid it on a Sunday afternoon I guess. And Monday nights. Saturday lunchtime and evenings have Prem Plus games I suppose, so they're out. Wednesday is Champions League night. Oh, so is Tuesday night. Sometimes there's UEFA Cup matches on a Thursday night isn't there? Football League Fizzy Football gets shown on a Friday night so best not come in then. So that leaves.... Oh well Rubes, there's always the summer months. Not this summer of course, it's the World Cup.
chopperbomb - 18 May 2006 11:05
This should, by rights, be my local as it's one of the nearest boozers to my latest rented flat. But it's probably the fact that the tvs are always on and said tv's are normally displaying either a group of men kicking a round ball, a different group of men picking up and running with an oval ball, or a couple of seated men in suits talking about the performance of groups of men....

You get the idea.

This pub deserves mention. It's small and that's good. It has a vibe that isn't chain, even though it is. The food is good, but if you are in a hurry, then there's KFC next door. Paul and Ellen are fantastic managers and it is a great place to watch football. And when it's empty, you like being there. Admittedly, it was my local for several years, but for Chiswick it gets points for NOT being like so many of the other places. I never noticed a single arsehole there. Though I do recall the old manager, Colin, once taking a fire extinguisher to a drunk (spraying him with it), which was hilarity in the extreme. Superb place. Memories of Euro 2004 are marked by this place.
BoozerFC - 21 Oct 2005 17:07
Good friendly pub, with the best priced selection of well looked after real ales in Chiswick - the inevitable Fullers Pride (but cheaper than most if not all Fuller's pubs) and usually 2 out of 3 from Timothy Taylor, Adnams and Archers. For those not into those 3 (I think) beers have both regular and "exra cold" version to suit most tastes.

Very popular for major sporting sports events, disabled person friendly, and good sized food portions at reasonable price.

Only real downside is the (non existing) parking if you have to drive but if you are trying the real ales who would want to.
dogcat - 18 Oct 2005 19:02
Formerlly a Wetherspoons. Barracuda bought a lot of older, smaller Wetherspoons.
Food takes AGES to come, but is tasty. Staff who stand around/read newspapers, etc. when there's no one to serve, really hack me off. They can lean on the bar, and look disinterested here, for Britain.
Beer OK, and reasonably priced. Some scum-bags drink here, and there can be a negative atmosphere. Suppose being half way to Hammersmith doesn't help.
Graam - 12 Sep 2005 13:36
Average food, beer ok, there should be a non-smoking area for people who want to eat while not being fumigated ... but that doesn't just apply here. Service friendly enough as people have said.
beeronaut - 23 Oct 2004 13:05
I've been here a few times now, and every time I go I'm impressed by the service here. They really do make an effort to look after their customers.
Johnno - 9 Jul 2004 11:20
This is distinctly a bar rather than a pub, but its not bad at all. Decent beer and good service. Great place to watch the football.
Johnno - 22 Jun 2004 13:00
Good beer, reasonable prices, friendly staff, very big sofas, a great place to meet up with friends, but the TVs are very noisy when the footy is on.
Michael - 27 Feb 2004 09:52
great atmosphere for big screen sporting events.(get there early in football season) fantastic staff with low turnover. good food. folk of all ages in here.excellent.
millym - 25 Jul 2003 21:25
Best cask beer range in W4.
Currently sells London Pride, Taylors Landlord and three Adnams beers.

Robin - 19 May 2003 10:20
Excellent cheap food, good beer, friendly staff and a good atmosphere.
