Listed for closure by Wetherspoons, last year - and placed on the market. Then taken off, a few months later.

The Friar Penketh appears to be the nearest decent real ale pub near to Warrington Bank Quay station. So it was my first stopping point in the town on Saturday morning. It's a Wetherspoon's built on the site of an old friary. There is a glass window on the floor near the entrance where you can see some of its remains. The pub itself is split over two levels. I passed the upstairs bar on the way to the toilets and could see it had one or two different ales from downstairs. But there didn't appear to be anyone serving and I'd imagine these were just old pumpclips that had not been removed. Downstairs, there appeared to be confusion around where the pumpclips actually were. Eventually the range was revealed to be Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best, Sharp's Doom Bar, Phoenix Wobbly Bob, Peerless Red Rocks, Shepherd Neame Night At the Village, Caledonian Talisman, Longman American Pale Ale & Rudgate Ruby Mild. They also had Broadoak Perry in a box in the fridge. The pub appears to be in the centre of Warrington's nightlife and I did return to the area much later in the evening. But at this time of the day, people were enjoying Wetherspoon's breakfasts. A fair number of odd groups were entering. A decent enough choice. But I did prefer their other branch in the town.

3 banks of 5 pumps. A couple of strong ones including Wobbly Bob. However I had Aegir by Milestone (5.2%) at £2.39 for the pint. Would go again.

The service was superb, very clear quality if real ale (Peerless) a big issue. Upstairs craft bar a bit disappointing, but a top Spoons.

One of the more downmarket Wetherspoons. Full of lager-swillers. However, they are about to open a real-ale bar upstairs called "Crafty Friar".

Above average Wetherspoons based upon good staff and a better range of less common beers than many. Otherwise you've seen one.........

One of my favourite JDW venues which always has a superb selection of real ales from around the country. Busy leading up to club time, then strangely deserted til chuck out time. Can usually get served relatively quickly (compared to other JDW pubs) even when busy. Some great ales supped over the last few months including Blue Moon, Yellowhammer and a selection from George Wright plus many more.

Was in here a couple of weeks ago, one of our noemal crowd does'nt rate the place for some reason (bit snobish I reckon). Anyway, those that did turn up enjoyed some golden colled Ales from Geroger Wright Brewing Co and Moorhouses - all in good condition and at 1.59p a pint, excellent value. They also accepted the 50p off a pint CAMRA vouchers at one per round. 8/10

went in around 5.oopm quick service was on red rock, good pint excellent service at the bar one of the better jd i have been in.only thing that spoiled was a lot of the people in their had white yellow blue sports shirts and were shouting and singing very loud which is a bit much when i was trying to enjoy a good quiet pint

As the previous reviewers have suggested, this really is one of the better 'spoons. Great choice of real ale - 15 handpumps in total, with all but one in service. The selection included four beers from the local Northern Brewing Ltd, and my pint of 'Two Tone Special' chocolate stout was particularly good.

Nice and friendly, otherwise a typical Wetherspoons. One of the cheaper ones.

What a pleasant 'Spoons! Very busy this lunchtime with a mixed crowd, yet the service was up to the mark, tables were being cleared, it was clean and tidy and had a good atmosphere.I had time for a couple of ales (George Wright's Pure Blonde and Slater's Premium)and both were in very good condition.

Considerably better than the usual Wetherspoons. I usually go in early evening - around 6.00 - and there are very few chavvy types. Ale selection excellent.

I agree with u chesterman! Love this place, less of an attitude than the usual warrington crowd. Handy for Warrington Bank Quay station as I can testify nearly missing my train in here one day. Never got over leaving half a pint and loads of nachos to leg it up the road, boo hoo!! I find the staff very friendly and chatty in here, even if they all seem to slag off the management, but the bosses r doing something right to run a top notch wethers like this one!
