user reviews of the City Barge, Chiswick

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Used as a filming location for The Beatles 1965 film "Help ". I wonder if they still have a tiger in the basement?
Tuna - 2 May 2017 12:41
They have demolished the old inside bar where THE BEATLES did their filming and replaced it with the worst type of fake old furnishings and cheap repro knick knacks. Madness. The tiled floor, old fireplaces and brickwork have been torn out. The CITY BARGE now looks like a service station on the M6. I hate this type of casual vandalism. Someone should tell the Greene King shareholders that their pub group is screwing things up badly.

An important contribution to this stretch of Chiswick. I would agree some of the charm has been lost in the renovation but compared to what Chef and Brewer did to to the Bulls's Head, it could have been a lot worse and there is space for that increasingly novel act in a pub: drinking.
They take their drinks seriously and there is a good selection and quite a few of the staff really know there stuff. Well done. I do find the food a bit pricey although their drinks are reasonable. The staff work hard so they deserve success. One little thing, the piped music can be a bit naff but it is great that they have brought back live music.

Been back twice since reopening good range of ales which have changed since 1st visit.Modern style open plan split level pity they couldn't have kept some of the old bar area. That is now where the restaurant and kitchen are.My thoughts are split this would look good in a new building/pub.Miss the character of the old though.I will be back.Oh yeh I received table service outside so I would say the service was good(might have been cos I was on crutches!).

Aaargh. The beautiful and charming old City Barge has been transformed into a standard issue modern departure lounge-style gastro-pub operation.
It's still okay because of the beauty of its location. The beer is good.
The owners must be right because it was busy.
But to those who loved the wonderful old place - the pub-snatchers have been again.
AbeC - 14 Jun 2014 12:25
Passed pub today looks like it has reopened after a 5 month major renovation.Building extended out back and I believe it has separated the bar and restaurant areas. Will take a closer inspection as soon as I can as it used to be my local.Currently learning to walk again after road accident. Paul j.

My wife and I returned to The City Barge for the first time this year. This place is great!!!

The place was very busy nothing was too much trouble.

The manager has done a great job in improving the food and cleanliness. I think they have a new chef who obviously cares about what his or her food is like. Nice to see a good selection of real ales available. The Old Specled Hen is superb.

Its nice to come back and see the same faces behind the bar, very welcoming looking forward to my next visit.

10 out of 10 excellent all round and what a lovelly location.

I came to this pub a couple of weeks ago on a warm sunny Wednesday night and it was an absolute joke. Both the bars were heaving with people and there was just one member of staff serving behind the bar. The upstairs bar had a bell on it which stated ring for service. I rang this and received no service whatsoever. The lad behind the bar kept sporadically disappearing to take food out, interupting the already insanely slow service. On relocating to the bottom bar there were about 14 people waiting to be served. Glasses and plates were everywhere as there was nobody to clean them up. customers were so fed up with the mess they were bringing glasses and plates in themselves and piling them on the bar.
I don't know what the hell the people who run this place are thinking, understaffing was clear and the shambolic service reflected this. we shall not be returning here until the brewery take note and put some more staff on. One person is not able to cope with the numbers of punters who pass through the doors. A word to the wise- don't put a bell stating ring for service when there is nobody to come and serve you, it just irritates the customers who spend good money in your establishments. It's a pity as the location is great and the pub itself isn't a bad little place. But to stop this place going under it's time for the owner to invest in some staff- hardly rocket science is it???
kc2011 - 17 Aug 2011 20:41
Good pub with good, friendly staff BUT, they are chronically under-staffed resulting in much frustration and waiting for customers during busy times. Some good food deals. Due a re-furb, but don't let that put you off!
dalsegno - 15 Aug 2011 15:19
The City Barge is a pub in a lovely location by the Thames in Chiswick. It has to be said that the pub itself is looking tired, the fixtures and fittings could do with a spruce up. Greene King could also do with reviewing their staffing. When I went in the pub was busy and one girl was on her own trying to serve on both the bars and take the food out. This was impossible for her to acheive and there were irate people complaining about the length of time they had to wait. It was not the girl behind the bar's fault but she was getting a lot of comments from people getting angry with her due to the waiting time. The food is good, I had fish and chips and my wife had a lasagna, both of which were good quality and tasty. Again we had to wait for our food, but it was worth it as it was good, besides we could see the girl serving was doing her best to get food out while serving drinks. Sunny day should surely mean more staff needed.
The pub itself should be a gold mine, with the right number of staff and a sensitive refurbishment (keeping the character of the place) it could be a great. I will return here as I had a nice time. I just find it a shame to see a place struggling when all it needs is a little investment from the brewery.

harry_b - 8 Jul 2011 12:41
It appears to me that the city barge in Chiswick has stepped up a few notches since my last visit a year ago. 1st of all the staff are extremely friendly and make you feel so welcome and then the most important thing for myself is the food as it has improved dramatically cooked to perfection and plated to perfection I would rate the city barge 10 out of 10 across the board :-)
romari - 16 Jun 2011 21:15
Great place. Have eaten here probably 6-7 times in past few months and always good. Large portions, good service too. Not sure if the manager from last summer is still around but he made a lot of effort and since it's local to where we were living, we have kept coming back.

The beer is good and the menu has decent choice and the weekday specials are a great bargain! Lovely location too, of course.

Happy return customer. (Just wish the soft drinks were cheaper, like most pubs they charge more for these than beer... sigh.)
chickpea13 - 26 Apr 2011 12:19
Re-furb has been postponed for 2nd time now.Been told later in year.I suppose as the weather is getting warmer they do not want to miss the summer trade.Very busy at w/end as the sun was out. This is a pub that could always do better, succesive owners b4 greene king could have spent more wisely. However i still enjoy drinking here for the odd pint or 3.Haven't seen any celebs recently just a mixture of locals and families during day.
never2old - 22 Mar 2011 21:55
Apparently closing in Feb 2011 for a major 4 months refurb by owners Greene King..going to be turned into a two floor venue...no onsite accomadation for the managers....
Clivers - 18 Jan 2011 20:03
With its location it should be so good.....it isn't.
millreef - 23 Nov 2010 09:04
Forgot to mention there were a few celebs in when we were there but everyone was treated the same. Nice to see TV celebs rubbing shoulders with the ordinary folks of Chiswick.

Fabulous pub on the River Thames, very warm and cosy. My friends and I are going to be using this great pub as a regular. The other pubs along Strand On The Green are restaurants so its nice to know there's a proper pub for us to come to to have a bite to eat and a few drinks. The pub dog is so cute, I think his name is Wilbur.
This is the kind of place we were looking for to chill out. Food is excellent especially the sharing platters. Staff and the Manager (Paul) are so friendly and really looked after us. Beer is fab and the girls enjoyed the wines.

Good to see a pub like this.
bigboys - 11 Nov 2010 21:50
I visited this pub today with my wife and we were made so welcome. The weather was awful so whilst walking along the Thames river side we came across this very warm inviting pub and decided to stay and have lunch.
The food was first class, nothing was too much trouble and we even overheard other pub goers commenting what a nice time they had here.
My wife and I will certainly be recommending this venue to our family and friends. The beer was excellent also I had a pint of IPA and my wife was recommended a large glass of wine.

Nice to see Christmas menus avaialble we may even book our Christmas lunch here we were so impressed.

This has ben one of my favourite pubs for a number of years until the new management took over and since moving to the riverside five years ago I've taken off my preferred list.

My girlfriend and I order two steak and ale pies with chips and peas.

We waited nearly 55 mins, only to find mine was totally black on the outside and Katharine's was still frozen in the middle. Utter rubbish.

Furthermore the pub has lost it's quintissential character and has been upgraded with the usual fake leather chairs and plasma screen to show the football to entertain the residents of the nearby council estates.

I would go to the Bulls Head or the Rose and Crown next next.

Trying hard to do better and some big improvements since the days when Ms 'Chapel Hat-Pegs' ran it. if you want food, go for cooked, unless that is, you want to spend a week glued to the lav.

went to this pub recently on a very wet and dreary evening and had a lovely time. The pub is cozy on the inside and the staff were helpful and friendly. We had a lovely bottle of Sauvingnon Blanc and some delicious food. Will certainly be returning there soon.
funkymonkey09 - 18 Jul 2009 20:32
D'oh - "reputation" should read "location" in my below review.
grecian - 29 Jun 2009 10:45
The first point to note is that changes are presumably afoot at this place: posters announced the pub is changing ownership in July 2009, and the barman told me the acquiring party is Greene King. That would ordinarily not be the cause for celebration, but I hope GK are able to raise the pub's game a bit, as it's pretty mediocre at the moment - a bog-standard Pubco pub trading off its reputation. Quite a nook-and-crannyish interior but from the outside of the pub one presumes it's not *that* old. Two or three real ales - Pride, I think, and maybe Adnam's: I forget. I didn't think was very good, really.
grecian - 29 Jun 2009 10:45
This pub has had a rough time in the last few months which has overshadowed the fantastic job that has been done since the new Manager took over. The place is again a happy and vibrant place to drink with a mix of locals and visitors alike. The team behind the bar are friendly and efficient and the food is of a good standard. It has gone from being quiet on weeknight evenings to having a good crowd in. The efforts of the new manager should be applauded, and that of his team. Well done.

A fun, funky little pub. I enjoy my visits here.

Are you seriously expecting people to believe that a straight couple kissing/snogging or having a passionate embrace/kiss would have
a: been complained about &
b: Asked to stop/leave?

Come on! That is absolutely ridiculous! Besides which.....what does the City Barge consider inappropriate kissing? The fact that 3 people complained and CHOSE to leave is there problem frankly.

Personally I find it distasteful when mothers breastfeed thier child in public but they have a right to choose to do this. 2 people kissing and being affectionate is hardly offensive - I doubt they were performing a live sex show!
Goodness sakes there are far worse things going on in the world to worry about....get a backbone!
Mookie22 - 28 Feb 2009 01:01
I have witnessed, on a number of occasions, straight couples kissing and generally indulging in affectionate behaviour towards each other and not once have they been requested to stop by any member of staff on duty at the time. "citybarge" states, and I quote verbatim, "........the manager was put in a very difficult situation.........." and frankly that is rubbish. The manager has a duty to uphold the law in respect of extending equality towards all customers, regarding of race, sexuality inter alia and clearly failed miserably on this occasion.

spikeyd - 28 Feb 2009 00:09
Any couple kissing in an inapropriate manner would have been asked to stop, especially on a busy sunday afternoon in a family pub, there is no question of any homophobia or prejudice. The couple in question were not asked to leave but only to tone down their behaviour, as anyone would have been. Three people walked out of the premises and many more complained about the couples behaviour, it was not as "innocent" as has been made out. I hope that people will realise that the manager was put in a very difficult situation and that this issue has been blown out of all proportion.
citybarge - 24 Feb 2009 12:35
On Sunday 22 February, a gay couple were asked to leave following, allegedly, complaints from 3 customers who objected to the couple kissing lightly. One wonders if the gay couple had complained about straight couples indulging in similar behaviour if this would have resulted in the same action being taken by the manager at this venue. I think not.
spikeyd - 24 Feb 2009 00:29
Not a good time here. For some years it has been a scruffy pub but we decided to give it a try again, last night No change visible to me except the furniture having been moved around. The barman had to keep running off to the lower bar to check on availability of drinks. In the end there was no Sparkling water, not a train smash but there you are. The barman tried to overcharge me and groaned when I asked for the cash slip which showed he that he had charged for 2 London Prides, not the 1 that was ordered. He did apologise profusely. The temperature of my London Pride was such that is must have been stored behing the bar not in the cellar and of the 4 beers that were being advertised outside only 2 were available.
ixion - 1 Jan 2009 15:00
Good riverside pub a game of two halves, with the upper section closed for a private function at the time of visit (well, it is Christmas time I suppose). Hobgoblin on draught was tasty and the service was friendly.

I am the new manager of the City Barge, I have been here for one month now and have made some large changes.
I believe that we have had many problems in the past but I can assure you all that they have been dealt with.
We have significantly improved the Sunday lunch menu and I am confident that you will not find a better Sunday roast in this area.
Our kitchen team are now producing great quality food 100% of the time and there is never more than a fifteen minute wait.
Both bars are now fully staffed and therefore there is never a wait for drinks service.
We have become dog friendly and allow dogs into our lower bar all day.
We are also family friendly but have very srict rules on the behaviour of children. We do not allow children to run around/scream and have bought many toys, games, puzzle books, jigsaws etc to keep children amused whilst parents are enjoying their food and drink.
The layout of the pub has changed and we are now a lot more spacious and customer friendly.
We are rotating our real ales every week, with London Pride as our main stay and two others changing daily.
As far as cleanliness is concerned we are working to the very highest standards.
We are due for a major refurbishment next march but untill then will be striving to reach the highest levels of customer service and standards possible.
We hope that you will give us another try so we can show you what we can do.

Great location overlooking the river, with a handful of tables outside on the towpath where one can spend a pleasant hour or so enjoying a pint and watching the swans swim by. But the river will come up over the towpath when there is a high tide, so be careful not to get your feet wet! Clean and comfortable inside with seating on two levels, including a largish sofa. Nothing special in the way of ales Pride, Adnams and GKIPA. All in all a pretty decent pub, but for me not the best pub along the Strand.
RexRattus - 7 Aug 2008 22:12
Seems a bit grubby and tired. Friendly staff though!!
Badger350 - 29 Jun 2008 16:27
An allright pub.

By the way - why does BITE have continual pop ups now? Cut it out lads
TheGP - 29 Apr 2008 22:07
Decent enough pub in a good location but looking a bit tired and, as the previous poster said, it could do with a sensitive overhaul (emphasis on sensitive - doesn't need tearing apart and turning into something it isn't).
TerryTibbs - 3 Mar 2008 13:00
The least of the pubs in Strand on the Green, which is a shame because it could be a real corker. Really needs a sensitive overhaul, a bit of care and some enthusiasm from the staff.
Redriley - 23 Feb 2008 12:15
A completely average pub, in a location that you just have to visit.
ONscotland - 15 Jan 2008 00:02
I have visited this pub over the last few weeks whilst the landlady i understand was on holiday and found the pub very friendly, good food, John from the bell in east molsey was running this pub and talking to the regulars, they told me he had made a vast improvment including sorting the tvs out so the customers can watch the sports while having a drink.
John done a real good job and it needs to be noticed, he should be there fultime.

Have I got anything to say about this pub, YES I HAVE. The Car park had a disabled parking bay outside and seeing that, I assumed that the pub was wheelchair friendly. WRONG, there was a 4" step to get into the main bar and entrance into the bar hindered by tables and chairs. To make things worse I was in need to go to the loo, yes you quessed it the toilets were small an inpossible to use. To add insult to injury I noticed a concrete ramp leading to a door I presume was used for loading barrels of beer, I cannot understand the logic, why haven't they put a ramp at the entrance of the bar to enable wheelchair access? As for the staff, the service, the food, and the ambience, i would give it 1 out of 10. My advice to those hungry and desperate to drink, give this a miss.
cracker51 - 1 Aug 2007 17:18
I popped in here for the first time last night. I recognised the landlady who has just arrived - she uised to run the Grenadier in Belgravia years back (which was great then). I had a good pint at a reasonable cost from a friendly bar person. So hopefully the comments I read below are out of date. I plan to go back.
mediouna_fulham - 25 Jul 2007 16:55
I agree with the last few comments about this place. I used to be fond of this pub, lovely location, good beer, good crowd of visitors and a nice mix of people. Now it is the opposite apart from location. The staff are terrible and you are made to feel that you are disturbing them when you require service! and when they do they are slow, unfreindly and unhelpful. The food is not to bad but the chef is the one that waits and clears the tables in his whites!! but I have to add he is the most professional and friendly person working there. The brewery need to visit this pub because it could make a lot more money based on the staff if they where changed rather than just cashing in on the over flow from other pubs along the river. Being a lisencee myself I know what potential it has but at the moment it is not well run pub. I wouldn't recomend it to anyone anymore.
Chaplin - 20 Apr 2007 13:40
What a pity. I have to agree with the review posted on Nov 4 '06. I have never been made to feel less welcome in a pub which used to be so good, and unfortunately it's the staff (especially management) are to blame. Quite why they decided to 'gastrocise' one of the areas' oldest most beautiful pubs is beyond me. The previously quaint, cosy downstairs bar is now a mix match of ikea style coffee tables which are ugly and totally out of context. The dart board has been replaced by a shiny plasma screen which is useless as they don't show any sport???

A classic case of brewery money being spent by someone who hasn't bothered to visit the pub.

If you do decide to go to this pub the best service you'll get is from the chef, who also waits on all the tables. He was the most polite friendly guy I met there all day. I say stay away til the DEADWOOD behind the bar leaves.
anonymous - 9 Apr 2007 22:55
For some strange reason my department at my firm always go here for the Christmas party. We always end up in the downstairs bar with the dart board and quiz machine. The food that we end up with has been exactly the same for the past 4 years, it is good but unimaginative.

I cant grumble about the service as I have always found it polite, but it can get a little annoying having to ring the bell in the lower bar to get a member of staff to come down when they know that 30 people are coming for a party.

Unfortunately for the City Barge, even though the lager and cider is very good, I would have to walk past the Bell and Crown to get to it and that isnt going to happen.
Strongers - 22 Mar 2007 09:03
Last summer the car park was newly tarmact and a new layout reducing its carpark cappacity from about 15 vehicles to 8 including 1 disabled space.Every time i go there the managers huge 4 wheel drive is parked in the disabled space,a old capri also belonging to the manager maybe for their Sunday drives, but the managment do also have a Harley Davidson so its good to see they are doing their little something for the enviroment.
This pub will always do good trade becouse of its location but of the 3 pubs along SOTG the Bell and Crown is best for beer and feeling like your one of the locals. The Bulls Head for good food and quaint rambleing rooms, and the City Barge for the Basil Faulty managment experiance. Its even the Thames least favorite as its the only one of the 3 it floods.
toklad - 1 Feb 2007 10:21
always loved this pub and have spent many nice evenings there, but have to agree with previous review that says that the assistant manager is rude. Screaming at staff and customers (!) is not the way to run a happy pub. That aside, it's a nice cosy place to enjoy a drink.
anonymous - 19 Nov 2006 11:48
I like this place. Location is excellent providing some nice seating on the riverside pathway, front bar very cosy, back bar totally different, bags of room, dining area for kids etc.

Beers were London Pride, Broadside and Hobgoblin. Some of our group had the Broadside and it seemed in good condition. Hobgoblin was sublime.
anonymous - 6 Nov 2006 11:38
I have been using the Barge on and off for about 30 years and I have to agree that the service and atmosphere has declined rapidly of late.
There are those of us who are now on the lookout for an establishment with friendlier staff and a warmer atmosphere.
I would like to point out that not all the staff look like they are chewing a wasps nest, most of the staff are very friendly and efficient, but the good ones rarely stay there long, which is never a good sign!
A great shame, as the Barge had it all at one time, friendly staff, good beer, good food and a warm welcome.
anonymous - 4 Nov 2006 15:43
this is a fantastic pub in a great location by the river. Only downside is the rather rude way in which the assistant manager talks to both customers and staff. Her manner is impolite and her insistance in telling off staff in front of customers is most unprofessional.Slightly ruins an otherwise fine drinking establishment.
bb9009 - 25 Oct 2006 18:36
Great position by the river and the london Pride quality. But the service...soooo slow gave up in the end and went to the Bell and Crown along the towpath. Far, far better.......
AndySk - 14 Oct 2006 19:24
I like it here. Tucked in by the river there is something quie nice about having a pint in the Summer by the Thames. Cosy in the Winter. One you will remember as opposed to the generic chains that pop up on the High Road. Go on give it a go!
bekker - 26 Feb 2006 21:11
Very pleasant sitting outside last Sunday enjoying the warm Spring sunshine, but I am afraid that the pub left quite a poor impression.
Service was very slow and there were dirty plates and glasses piling up on the outside tables, with a result that new customers were put off from sitting there.
Definitely understaffed and could do much better - come on Mr Manager, get it sorted out !

JohnBonser - 19 Apr 2005 14:25
Locals definately do drink here - good atmosphere all year round - and fantastic to sit by the river on a sunny summer afternoon.
wonkyd27 - 9 Feb 2005 16:04
Pleasant riverside pub with seating on the towpath. Gets busy in the summer. Food OK but not great. The best thing about this pub is the jazz night every Thursday.

Yes my grandfather would be very unhappy to think his former pub had poor service.

I guess I will have to fix it as his Grandson.

Still those the service is poor but the place and it's local customers are rich.

comments are welcome.

Great location, staff friendly as long as it is not busy. Food is not great but edible - for your Caesar salad must admit that you should take a leaf (excuse the pun) out of The Pilot. Also don't think there is any need for the open fire on a warm June afternoon!!

Otherwise good atmosphere and very nice wine and beer!

This is the best pub ever, the service is good, although people tend to complain because it is so busy. Whoever said that locals don't drink there is wrong. We do, and we love it!

When you have 500 year old pub by the river it's difficult to go wrong. But my god they suceed in doing just that. Half the time half the pub is shut down. It appears to run by a phantom Basil Fawlty and the barmaid does a very good impression of Sybil. Avoid the food unless you are very very hungry. Big give-away - no locals drink there. Someone must have money to burn to run a pub like this down into the ground! All that said, a beer by the Thames is a treat, when the tide is out...

The pubs along the river can't go wrong really.
Good for: Hot summer nights

grear location. can be mobbed when the suns out. staff work & try hard! food - brilliant sometimes shite others. bring munchies for ducks( they like crisps) can be overrun outside by very posh loud obnoxious kids & their equally posh loud & obnoxious parents/grandparents esp on sunday lunchtimes

great location on a sunny day. have been there many times(local) & always found staff (esp manageress)friendly & efficient even when the place is mobbed although some of the barmen are a bit vague at times. food varies - have had some great feeds there & some not so good. bring some bread to feed the ducks(although i think theyre addicted to pringles)can be overrun with posh screaming sprogs occasionally but otherwise good!

Nice pub and location for when weather is good, food was actually really nice when I had some last week!

Went there once and they had ran out of food, so I can't tell you if it was bad or not. Wouldn't have minded if it was late in the evening but it was 12 noon!!!

I was there just recently. It is true that some of the staff are a bit terse but my food was excellent and I found the whole place nice to be in. My only serious criticism is that they don't serve crisps or peanuts and look down their noses at you if you ask for them.

Poor service and diabolical food - its catering is about ten years out of date. Roast pork swimming is gravy, veg hard. Didn't come with potatoes, when they did they were deep fried (a quick-fix)and bullet-hard. Absolutely no excuse in this day and age for this quality of food. It relies on its location not on quality.
