user reviews of Golden Hind, Plymouth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Looks a bit rough from the outside but inside is fine although maybe a little bit bland of an interior.
Drinks were a very good price and they had three good ales on.
Wish we had eaten in here instead of stuffing our faces with mcdonalds earlier on.

7/10

Bee range (and prices) have changed recently - GK IPA at 2.57 and Brains SA at 2.68. Fosters and keg John Smiths still 1.99 and the food is still excellent vfm.

It really isn't as bad as the previous reviews suggest!

Courage Best and Sharps Doombar on offer at 2.47 a pint were both in fine condition on Sunday. Cheap offers on some lagers and (non real) ales. Very good value food from an extensive menu. Usually busy but service is still good.

Pool table and darts board in a separate room and TV screens for sport throughout the pub although the volume is usually quite reasonable.

Now a "Sandersons" which means lots of cheap meals in the lounge and a constant smell of chips. It's not all bad however. They've got very good ale (including Sharp's "Eden" on draught) and excellent sports coverage. It should be even better once the smoking ban is introduced as it does get very smoky, the locals apparently not giving a shit about the large food trade. Only pub for quite a way could be worse....

This pub has taken somewhat of a nose-dive since the landlord and lady left recently.

I believe they are now at the Hill Park, near Mutley Plain in Plymouth.

Ah.... the Golden Hind.... many an evening spent supping ale and downing whisky.... also good for 'preparing,' for mid / late 1990s raves in fields the day after and keeping it tidy for drives New Years Eve parties up country!

Still a favourite of mine when i return to Plymouth, but more for convenince and memories! that and the fact I used to live nearby!

I visited this pub recently and found the new landlord receiving a good hiding from the "friendly locals/lads". I understand that he has just retired from the trade. Good luck to the fella, he's better off out of here for sure.

The revamp it received a few years ago could not hide the fact that this pub suffers a bad location (it's looks out onto Manadon fly-over) . Functional then, with little much else to offer except maybe a gang of locals who keep it from descending into total pub degradation.
good for: Winter evenings when you want to make soemthing of the bleak weather

My second home! A true local for the lads and I, friendly staff, a fine quiz, and a clientele composed almost entirely of taxi drivers and Spurs fans. Still, nowhere's perfect.... On a more objective note, cheap beer, cheap food, decent telly, pool table etc. And now refurbished, to look like a timewarp to 1987 instead of 1985!
