Great beer and pub. One complaint Mr landlord stop looking so miserable and sullen it puts people off returning, maybe try engagiyng in conversation with your punters.

Visited the H&H on Saturday 17th September with two other beer enthusiast friends. First impressions were that it was a bit Wetherspoonesque. We looked forward to sampling the delights from the board and as a Moorhouses fan I went for the Broomstick bitter, which took a while to clear. Before I had even tasted the beer I could feel that it was far too cold, the tasting confirmed this and we were all in agreement. During our visit we sampled six of the ten beers from the board. We were not over impressed with any of them and thought perhaps if any of them did have any outstanding qualities then these could have been masked by the extreme mouth numbing coldnes. The pub itself is clean and appeared civilised but lacked any soul or atmosphere. We caught the bus outside to take us to our spiritual home...The Trackside in Bury. When we told another of our friends at the Trackside where we had been he saild "COLD" and we agreed and left it at that. The visit was worthwhile in that we now know that we can exclude it from any future visits to Rammy. My rating is based on my opinion of this as a Real Ale Pub

When it comes to real ale, there are few pubs nationwide that provide the drinker with such a varied choice. (10 on tap) Ales are usually sourced from micro breweries, with Yorkshire being a popular choice. It has won both a cask marque award & is also in the CAMRA 2011 real ale quide.
The pub is large with a central bar and an open plan interior, at the front is a sports section with a large TV, with the rear & left side consisting of mixed seating & dining & on the right a small pool table & the toilets. Outside it also has a rear patio table/bench area. The pub is clean & comfortable but impersonal & unwelcoming? It seems to lack character and I'm sure the number of gambling & games machines don't help with this.
The pub does enjoy it's regular patronage but its clientle base is a little transient, with sunny days & match days/nights (Sky TV) in particular attracting large numbers. Getting to the bar when football is on can be horrendous.
Further, on my visits I've noticed some Staff pre-occupied with their mobile phones or talking to each other rather than serving people. This is major irritation which is often compounded by them consistently serving short pints & asking for "top ups". Whilst not a major crime, it's important attention to detail (or lack of it) and it's something the manager needs to address or people will eventually vote with their feet & drink elsewhere.
Contrary to other reports, I found the choice of food quite reasonable, however the portion quality/size/prices were disappointing, there is definitely room for improvement here. In my opinion the menu needs updating, simplifying and the prices reducing, unlikely to happen though.
Aside from the latter negative gripes, overall this is a good pub (and worth a visit) located at the foot of Holcombe Hill on the outskirts of Ramsbottom, with a convenient bus stop outside the front door (474/474 Bury-Ramsbottom) there's no excuse.

Beer well kept. Food is too ordinary for the high prices charged, needs either upgrade in food or reduction in price. Rather soulless and not a place one longs to return to for another visit.

got bared

Food is run of the mill, text book, oven ready chain pub fayre, but the beer is EXCELLENT.
Great choice, well kept cellar. Ask the bar staff for a sample before you buy. Just don't ask for a smile....
Not bothered. Chair. Table. Newspaper. Beer. Winner

Not sure what this place is meant to be. Very clean and pleasant inside, albeit a bit of a barn. It soon becomes obvious its part of a chain selling (over-priced) supposedly high-quality food (we didnt have any). Its like an up-market Beefeater but with ten hand pumps; all the beers we had were excellent. Saturday teatime had a few children in, I guess it can get worse. Large outdoor area with a bit of a playground. Dont get the impression its much of a drinkers pub, its a bit characterless.

I hadn't been in years but called in one Saturday afternoon and what a change. Beer choice was great and well kept, didn't try the food but I'll take the wife. If she thinks we're going for a meal she won't think I'm just interested in the ale.

A real find. Thought a beer festival must be on, given number and variety of beers, but apparently this is normal. Quality ( a dark beer too) was excellent, so real turnover must be high. A lot of character too, and a great Lancashire location.

Called in today for a meal, and had a lovely curry. Chose this pub for the array of real ales it had on last year when we visited the area, and were not disappointed this year either. 12 handpumps, 8 real ales, 1 empty and 1 with cider. Good choice of both light and dark beers, and weak and strong beers. We enjoyed Cottage The Underdogs, Brains SA Gold, and a new beer for us, Downton Honey Porter. All the beers were in great condition served by pleasant staff. It was a lovely clean pub with a bar serving large areas around it. There was a screen showing sport in one area, but it was not obtrusive. Enjoyed my visit.

The best pub in Bury-simple as that. 10 real ales and food all day. Landlord is very knowledgeable and holds beer festivals throughout the year. Beer garden at rear.
|
Another visit to this excellent pub that served great food and good quality real ales. Brilliant selection too. Another that local CAMRA have missed from the Good Beer Guide like the excellent Trackside in Bury. Always come here when staying at nearby Burrs Park.

This is a fantastic pub and we called in a few times while on holiday for both the real ale and the food. Great selection of beers changed between visits and all well kept. Staff friendly and they have a lovely garden area too.
|
Large (9 on yesterday, 10 hand pumps avaliable) selection of good real ales. Very reasonable food. Worth a visit.
|
A large pub, refurbished on a modern style inside.
Good food is served until late at very reasonable prices.
Several well kept real ales available, with a useful board to indicate their type (light-dark etc). Got the cask marque accreditation.
A very handy location for buses etc, well worth a visit.
