Comfortable enough on a quiet Thursday afternoon, looks to have had a refurb and is slightly food orientated with prices to match. Five handpumps but only had Doom Bar and Oakham Citra on, no contest really.

Visited the pub today, very friendly lady serving who was quite happy to let us have a sample try before you buy. They had Amber Gold, St Austell's Tribute and their House ale brewed in Wirksworth which seems to have improved in taste since my last visit. Nice warm fire to match the warm welcome.
Also visted the Black's Head nearby, a surperb little pub, again with a very friendly lady at the bar who was also happy to let us sample the ale before buying. I can't see this pub listed on the site but I do recommend it to you. had a nice blonde ale brewed by Greene King as well as a guest ale by Milestone.

Visited yesterday and thought it very good...warm (coal fires lit) and very friendly. Excellent beer in the form of Wirksworth brewery and another local which I forget.
Handy for the railway and the local farmers' market

Is this the worst pub in Derbyshire? Probably not, but it's doing its best. With fireless fireplaces, stone cold radiators and the foulest beer (which, apparently, "the locals like"), it was unsurprising to find the bar empty. There's absolutely no need to visit this pub when the much better 'Black's Head' is only 50 yards away and 'the Royal Oak' is just around the corner.

Two distinct halves to this pub, one half full of families and the other full of youths who seemed to be either very drunk or high on something; -seemed a bit early in the afternoon for that to me. Anyway the front bar seemed to attract a rum bunch but the pub's own ale is very nice and the pool table only costs 50p so I had a lovely time. Also, the sozzled youngsters were putting some excellent tunes on the clearly fantastic juke box so we were glad they were there.

Me and my brother called in here yesterday after a quick visit to the EVR railway and we enjoyed a wel-kept pint of Batemen's Summer Swallow and their locally brewed house-beer Anchor Bitter which was perfectly acceptable. The staff were friendly and offerred us the chance to have a sample taste of one of the beers beforehand. We also and a reasonably priced excellently cooked roast beef dinner, a very pleasant visit and based on this experience we would certainly return.

Very deifinitive bar & lounge set up.The 'public' is naturally the lower street facing bar. A mix of the 'lower order' in the bar, (who am I to be such a patronising twat - but hey... we all see it as it is according to us ). Pool table and indigenous dog owners in the bar. Four ales on - Tribute, some Storm brew from Macclesfield and two local Wirksworth brews : Anchor Bitter & T owd Man. The T'owd Man was a nice pint but the general ambience of the place wasn't conducive to me having another.

Cerationly central to Wirksworth nightlife ! Very lively with a youngish crowd, but decent beer range and friendly staff

Dominant position in village at bottom of very steep hill and next to the most lop-sided market place I've ever seen...three separate bar areas, although two of them are knocked through to accomodate the main bar and the pool table area. Good selection of beers on, including Anchor brewed for the pub by the Wirksworth brewery. I can imagine this can be the central attraction of nightlife in this large village/small town.

The public bar is dominated by TVs and is a good place to watch sport. The lounge bar is quieter. We visited twice last week. The first time there were three beers from the Wirksworth brewery across the road. The second time was all change and St Austell Tribute was accompanied by Batemans XXXB and Amber Chilli Beer. The food is standard fare from a short but all encompassing menu. Worth a visit.
