As we needed to eat in a hurry last night, we opted for bangers and mash served with a reasonable pint of Silhill Brewery WOW for £9 at this archetypal Wetherspoons. They still sell Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best and Sharp's Doom Bar and the other guest ales were Silhill Hop Star and North Star, Byatt's Jester and New Buildings Farmhouse (which cost £2.46 and was average). Half an hour later and we were off!

This Wetherspoon's enjoys a prominent location on a corner opposite the imposing city hall. It's much smaller than you expect on the inside and unusually toilets are on the ground floor. It was busy on a Saturday lunchtime. But I just about managed to find a spare table. They have the 'spoon's staples - Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharp's Doom Bar. But there were also 5 guests - Byatt's XXXmas, Grainstore Rutland Osprey, Purity Saddle Black, Wychwood Hobgoblin & Long Man Inn Keeper. Broadoak Perry was in a box in the fridge. The pub had the usual range of customers, from lunchtime alcoholics like myself to families with babies and ladies who lunch. The better of the two Wetherspoon's pubs in the city centre.

Ticking off the GBG 2019 pubs of Coventry. This was #1.
All the bad thing you expect from a JDW - filthy tables, angry queuing at the bar, inexperienced bar staff shouting "who's next" not exactly helping.
What was a real disappoint was the beer. Elliswood Royal Standard was very poor.

Trying to tour Coventry on a wet Sunday meant ducking from pub to pub between being soaked as you admire the cathedral & other sights. The only pubs that appeared open were the Wetherspoon's as far as I could tell, and I won't hear a bad word about this one, as I was cold wet & cranky & it was open before lunch. A pint of Doom Bar was satisfactory & only 2.00. Friendly staff & if the customers were the Wetherspoon's usual demographic, thirsty elder citizens, well so am I.

So imagine you're in a typical Weatherspoons - no atmosphere, horrible waiting room decor, lots of people sitting alone.... Now, put the prices up a bit, reduce the beer range and assume that nobody has attempted to clean the place or collect glasses for a few days - welcome to the Earl of Mercia.
It looks quite grand and posh from the outside, don't be fooled. The clientele is the usual Spoons advocates, I.e. people who can't afford to drink anywhere else and those who can but are too tight too.
The Captain can't defend this. This is not a pub. 4/10.

Good selection of beers and excellent service

Popped in despite our general dislike of Lloyds as had been failing to find any beer. A Drop of the Black Stuff was very good.

I suppose that it had something to do with the Real Ale festival being on (and perhaps because it was a Monday night), but this seemed more like a normal Wetherspoons than a Lloyds No. 1 bar. Anyway, the beer was good, the atmosphere was fine, and I find it hard to understand the current low rating.

Visited on 28th October (the night it was snowing). Had a decent meal here and the [recorded] music was at a level which enabled comfortable conversation with the locals.
Standard Lloyds No. 1 pub conforming to corporate operational models.
Only disappointment was two advertised ales were, in fact, not available despite their clips facing forward. I ended up drinking soft drinks and saving capacity for the next pub.

Called here a couple of times during a recent weekend visit. The place has a �used� feel to it, but is clean. The cask beers were good and food adequate & well-priced.
More of a disco at night, sometimes charging entry.
Would go again [fine in the daytime].

Good music, nice doorstaff but why so many fights? Cheap food, cheap beer, I s'pose that is why the trouble.

great dj and music on friday and saturday. karaoke bloke not that good , but not a kean karaoke fan .
