Not to many positive comments. Popped in yesterday as we had a half hour wait for our next train and it was fine, just had the one pint of Stella (which was good). barman seemed a friendly enough bloke so would recommend it for a pint on route from Hither Green to Hastings.

Friend and I came in here randomly one Saturday afternoon and cant say we were overly impressed - took take an age to get served and place just seemed in need of a dettol bath. Good points are the bus stop outside and train station just up the road to make a swift exit

Awful pub, full of druggies. Best avoided.

Like the last correspondent, I foolishly gave the Maxwell a go on 5 December 2014 - mainly to see the band playing. The band were great, but the pub is sadly very poor. If it were not bad enough that local drunks fell on me, the landlord appears not to know anything about wine. I asked for a dry rose wine, and was given a SWEET wine !! Bad enough, but when I complained, the landlord stated "that was what you ordered" and walked away. Maybe a spot of customer service training is in order, but I doubt it will happen. I think I'll stay away - for ever !!!!

I rather foolishly gave the Maxwell another go last week.........
Wish I had not. There are now bare walls where pictures used to be, an even more basic choice of drinks and a pub full of kids thinking they are local faces on one side and miserable old fellas on the other. The barmaids preferring to chat instead of serve.
A sign the pub has changed for the worse? Lots of lovely notices about the pub not tolerating drugs. Mind you I reckon ever the most discerning druggie would balk and the poor standard of the bogs.

Open again, although the new manager appears to have overlooked the fact that the toilets are a health hazard (as they were under the previous "management") and the clientele is less than pleasant. Not a pub to go out of your way for (in fact I would advise people to walk past this one!).
|
Sadly predictable. Hopefully whoever takes this on (I believe someone is taking over) will make a go of this once great pub.

Another crushing low in a series of crushing lows that is the Maxwell...........
Walked past yesterday and there was a sign in the window saying thatthey had NO draft beer! They did have bottles but even they looked like they were not many in number.
So is the number up for the Maxwell. I gather thatthe Landlady Anne has moved on so does the pub have a future.
It seemed that a while ago all of the bits of the jigsaw were falling into place, the pub was packed out (particularly when sports were on, it started to serve decent ale (and the local CAMRA crew were even starting to sniff around and support this,) and it was good value. Then something seemed to go very very wrong and we now have an empty pub with no beer. If it is true and Anne has left the pub, I wish her and her family all of the best. I hope the Maxwell does not close for good, but fera that this might be the case and whoever takes it over has more luck, it is the only pub in the area and has a fairly large catchment area as it is near transport and houses.
I had many happy days there but those days were a while back, I and a few other would go back but may not get the chance to it seems.

Often no real ale (and when there is it is out of condition. )No sky TV now for ages. Less and less choice of food and now does not accept cards so looks like even the bank is getting twitchy. A pub that limps on and as it gets ever more dilapidated and empty of stock it gets ever more empty of customers. It seems only a matter of time before it gets put out of its misery. I don't want this to happen mind and maybe something might change. This pub was so much better a few years ago and still could be but I really fear for this one as it goes downhill very very fast

looks lovely pie shop from outside and the cask ales wordings especially drew me in,sadly this was not to be...six handpumps=blank ales=bottled in fridge and full selection ie had fuller chiswick bitter (3),food menu=various dishes crossed out, gents=out of order and alternative signposted, all in all really getting run down i just hope i quaffed here on a bad day.so much potential 4/10

Oh dear! Going from bad to worse! Since my last post bemoaning a lack of lovely or indeed any draft ale,I now see that the pub no longer has Sky Sports. Thus the 2 reasons myself and a fair few others used to go there are now gone. The Maxwell used to be a decent boozer but now is clearly on it's uppers. All a bit sad really. My heart says support the place but my head says there is nothing now to make it worthwhile

Very disappointing, as stated above no real ale and when I popped in the other day they were starting to run out of other drinks as well.
Hope this will not be long term but the pub management needs to get this sorted. The pub was beginning to make a name for itself on the real ale front and this could be lost if the problem continues.

Currently have a problem with cooling system in the cellar so no Real Ales which, aside from convenience to Orpington Station is normally the attraction of this pub.

Nice pint of London Pride.
|
we now have a great selection of real ales with a choice of at least four at any one time.London Pride,Bombardier,Broadside,Cumberland and some exciting guest ales coming in.
|
Looks to be all change at the Maxwell.
The landlady Anne has (I gather,) bought the pub from the Spirit group and so now really is the guvnor!
New range of beers and ales on tap.
Lets hope all goes well for her in a brave new world of owner management

Top pub and certainly not typical of the grot you normally find near a station.
Only drawback is a lack of decent ale. They usually have Green King IPA (passable,) but have now moved away from a choice of 2 or 3 that they had a while back.
So come on Anne get some decent beer in!
Food is very good value.

Went in there 2 years back or so, and was alright but wasn't blown away by any aspect it. Then again it was just after opening so explains why it was empty. No idea what it's like at night, but I've no inclination to really try it now. Certainly wouldn't bother walking there from Olaves every lunchtime ;) (only joking fellas)

This pub was our frequent haunt until it became a 21s only, we came in here many a time for lunch and a pint. It was never too busy and the staff were always friendly and helpful. Good ales on tap but no more Speckled Hen which is a personal favorite of mine.

In the same breath that God decreed Jodie Marshs brain should be no bigger that pinhead, He also let it be so that the closer a pub is to a railway station, the greater the content of shit per square yard. No idea why I`ve always assumed it had something to do with getting back at Satan, who after all has to be a major shareholder in Railtrack or whatever privatised nightmare we currently live under.
Most railway pubs are as a consequence simply pants: overpriced dives serving pre-heated midget piss in surroundings that veer towards the disused abattoir look. They survive on the laziness of people like yours truly, who cannot be arsed to walk too far for a tipple after a fitful connection journey and duly hand over enough cash to keep these festering crapholes in business.
It is therefore difficult to be too harsh on any pub that breaks this stereotype, which the Maxwell certainly does. Located within a two min walk of Orpingtons platforms, the Max serves a reasonable range of well kept lagers and ales at affordable (and sometimes dirt cheap) prices. The interior is a moderately sized and clean affair, but extremely bland, with a range of wooden fittings and a solid floor that grace far too many similar pubs across the country. I cannot fault the staff nor the well priced, if unoriginal menu, and for the most part the clientele are fairly pleasant, if as sedate as a horse with an arse full of tranquillisers.
As anyone will notice, I`m not exactly gushing about the Max and really a short summary would describe it as a bit non-descript. However, compared to most railway pubs its an Eden and in general it does the job, if without much flair. 6/10.

Went into here on an end of term do at school - Attempt to crawl to bromley. Pleasant atmosphere, although for a Friday afternoon seemed very very empty. Seemed like a group of teachers were sitting in 1 corner downing a few pints of ale - good stuff. 3 ales on tap, although 2 ran out when i was there, which was discracefull. Darts board and a pleasant outside seating area, where you can watch the world go by.
|
although the atmosphere is quite old it has recently become better due to good entertainment. i am now a regular because on sundays there is a pub quiz, with prizes such as DVD players, a darts competition on thursdays and many other things. the service is brilliant with jane being the best bar maid, we love you jane!! they also have sky which shows most sports including the current darts competition. Really good pub and deserves its props.
