The Frog And Nightgown, Faygate

Pleased to report that the F & N is open and a must-visit for those who enjoy unpretentious rural pubs serving a good choice of well-kept ales in beautiful surroundings. Our visit on a hot Saturday afternoon found beers from Harveys, Dark Star and Long Man breweries, all in excellent condition. Fuller's London Pride was also available.

The pub has been smartened up a little, without sacrificing its former character. Food is served and the building now includes a tea-room, providing another dimension for visitors to enjoy.

The well-maintained garden is enormous and has far-reacing views across the surrounding countryside. No car park apparent but there's easy parking on the quiet lane outside.

This must be a contender for the perfect country pub.

The Olde Plough Inn, Bere Ferrers

Time for an update on this beautifully-located gem. Staying in the area on holiday and was delighted to find this friendly pub just around the corner, with views of the nearby Tavy estuary from the pleasant garden.

Run by a lovely family with a comfortably relaxed approach, totally in keeping with the laid-back atmosphere of Bere Ferrers in general. That said, if you're eating here, you won't be disappointed with either speed of service or quality of the good-value meals.

Three ales on offer and great care taken to ensure that customers are happy with their pint.

The pub is also on the Tamar Valley Line Rail Ale Trail, the local station being just 10-15 minutes' walk away. You can't go wrong.

The Royal Oak, Rusper

Visited the superb Royal Oak over the recent bank holiday weekend and again yesterday (not least, to show 20-year-old daughter what a proper rural pub is all about) and found the ales, service and ambience absolutely top-notch, as usual.
If you simply want to enjoy a good range of well-kept beer or cider (excellent soft drinks, too) in idyllic surroundings, this pub sets the benchmark. You won't be disappointed.
