The Star Inn, Lockwood

A derelict back street pub, as recently as 2002, The Star is now a genuine freehouse which is held in high regard on the Huddersfield ale circuit. Owner and landlady, Sam, has created a warm & welcoming traditional community pub, with the emphasis very firmly on the beer. Expect a varied selection of micro brewers' offerings, warm fires, and plently of locals propping up the bar. But don't be surprised if a mini bus pulls up outside to drop of a visiting CAMRA branch! The pub isn't very big, so it can get busy, but its only 5 minutes down the road from the Rat & Ratchet, so it makes a nice little run out of, or into, town. Also, look out for the occaisonal beer festivals - approx. 60 handpulls in the large marquee in the yard, making The Star the best pub festival in the area.

The Slubbers Arms, Huddersfield

A street corner local which is owned by Timothy Taylors of Keighley, so expect the Taylor's range plus one guest beer. A new landlord took up the reins, just before Christmas 2008, and has smartened the place up a little and introduced a lunchtime menu which is proving popular. The Taylors Golden Best is particularly recommended. Some words of caution to first time visitors, though. The pub is close to Huddersfield Town's ground and is rammed with supporters whenever Town are at home, so check the fixture lists. Also, the red light district is nearby, so be careful if walking from town late on an evening. And, finally, the new landlord has significantly upped the prices - expect to pay 2.50+ a pint in an area where 2.20 - 2.30 is standard.

The King's Head, Huddersfield

Located at the very end of platform 1 or accessed from St Georges Square, the Kings Head (renamed from the Station Tavern in 2008) is easily missed. That makes it all the more surprising that its usually so busy. The building itself comprises of a large room with two smaller rooms coming off. Its a bit rough & ready, in terms of decor & facilities, but the saving grace is the beer. Always a decent selection of handpulled beers, at competitive prices, and always on good form.
