The Ewe, Weston Green

The Ewe closed for business in January 2014. The site has been sold to the Co op and will open as a supermarket as soon as planning permission is granted.

The Ewe, Weston Green

Beers in the Evening is a great site where people can express views either positive or negative on an experience in a pub. The downside to such a site is that sometimes, contributors can post negative comments which can be untrue. By this, people can be too critical or not critical enough. There is also the possibility for some competitors to post negative comments in the hope that potential customers can be convinced to look at other opportunities in the neighbourhood. Therefore anyone using this site should read the comments, but perhaps still explore new places just in case commentators get it wrong.
I reviewed The Ewe last year. I would like to declare my interested in this pub. I am a regular drinker. I eat there a couple of day a week because it is very close to where I live. I do not work for the Landlord. In fact, I have never worked in the hospitality industry in my entire life.

The team running the Ewe have kept up the high food standards since I last posted to this site. Over the past year, I have learnt a lot about the Family running this pub. Declan and Catriona have been in the hospitality trade for many years. Declan is a qualified chef and rumour has it that in the past he was a qualified butcher. This massive experienced is proven by the quality of meat used. Beef is well hung which means that steak is always great. The mixed grill is one of the best I have ever experienced in a long time. On the rare occasions I have visited the pub during the day, I have noted a lot of deliveries of small orders from local supplies.

Small and regular deliveries give me a lot of confidence that the food is fresh. One example is the veg its not 3663 or Brake Brothers, its Rob from Hinchley Wood. Not the cheapest option for a business, but veg is well prepared and cooked properly.

Beefburgers are homemade and full of flavour. I am very partial to the combination of mushrooms and blue cheese. Whilst this is not a feature of the menu, it will get served if I ask for it, no questions asked.
This is a pub which happens to sell some very good food. One of the most important things about a pub is the drinking and the general ambience. The standard brew is 6X and as a real ale drinker, I would like to see a different house beer behind the bar. Whilst 6x is not my favourite, it is the most popular real ale in this pub. The management needs to sell what will not sit on the shelf.

There is often guest ale on the tap. 6x is sweet and the proprietors are smart enough to ensure that the guest ale is not similar. In the past I have drunk London Pride and Bombardier. The current guest brew is Youngs very nice.
When its just 6X, I will switch to lager or a glass of red from a very wide selection of wines. I have heard good comments from the white wine drinkers.
The Ewe is only lacking one thing and that is more people.

Catriona and Declan go a long way out of their way to make people really welcome. There are locals who drink in the bar who engage with strangers in conversation. This is really a breath of fresh air compared to some of the Clicky places I have been to elsewhere in this country. The proprietors work very hard to ensure that all staff is signed up to the welcoming ethos of the Ewe.

Compared to some places, its not a fantastic location, but the warm welcome and good/booze food more than compensates!

The Ewe, Weston Green

I moved house within Thames Ditton quite recently and the Ewe is my nearest pub. When I moved in, it was closed. A few months later, I seen some activity inside and heard rumours that it would soon be back in business.

Wihtin the first week of opening, I wandered in and was greeted by the new landlord, Declan. I was impressed with prices of the food and beer!

I am amazed that Wheelspj, could arrive at his conclusions and then burst into print without even eating in the establishment. If Wheelspj had eaten there, he/she would have experienced food which is homemade. Nothing is bought in pre-prepared. The chips come from potatoes which are peeled on the premises. The chef makes the burgers and meatballs from scratch. There is very little in the way of fried food. Yes, the choices on the menu may be a bit short, but long menus will require stockpiling and thats where you will not get fresh food!

Declan and his team run a family friendly pub in a calm ambience. I often take in my 11 year old daugter for a quick lunch. When I arrive, the bar team engage her in conversation as well "How is your new school? Whats the teachers like?"

Clearly this is a place which is run on old fashion public house values where the publican is a major stakeholder in the pub and takes a real interest in the clients who walk through the door. Its a big change from the trend where the big brewers appoint managers who have no interest in getting to know the clients as they know that they will be sent to the next position soon.

So to conclude, give this place a try! You will enjoy it.
