being perverse thought I'd try the "one to be avoided" no redeeming features, staff clearly wanted to be somewhere else (probably a Saga holiday), strangely quiet on a busy day in castleton, only reason I didn't take beer back was I couldn't bear to contribute further to barman's state of depression

quick update - back in village last weekend - they've done up the restaurant, new everything, smart - beer still ok as well (!)

good traditional pub, best in village (of the 5 I visited anyway!), excellent real ales, wide range of food at reasonable prices (I had the beef and Stilton sandwich - VERY nice!). They advertise a Monday quiz and weekend carvery.
