Profile information

The original 'Sir Paul Pindar' was demolished in 1990, it stood at 213, Bishopsgate, on the corner of Pindar Street. Originally it was called the 'Kings Arms' but when my family and I took over the tenancy of the premises from Charrington on 21 November 1979 we investigated how Pindar Street gained its name at the local Bishopsgate Institute. We had nine very, very happy years at the pub and made lots of friends there. However when Rosehaugh Stanhope came along to redevelop Liverpool Street Station and create Broadgate the Brewers decided to accept their offer which included the leasehold interest of a new pub close to the site. The ground floor bar was a truly traditional pub with a great atmosphere and busy every session (in those days we closed at 3.00 p.m. and reopened at 5.00 p.m. Monday through to Friday. On the first floor we opened 'Nice One Cyril's' which was the first type of Sports Bar of its kind in London. We showed all England's matches from the 1982 World Cup on a giant screen suspended at one end of the room. The first game saw Bryan Robson score against France in the opening minutes in a 3-1, win. The bar was absolutely packed to capacity and because it was during 'closing' we only served soft drinks. 'Nice One Cyril's' had 3 pool tables and a half size Snooker Table in the room and on Tuesday and Thursday nights we had our own Pool League, 'The City Traders' Pool Association' and local firms such as Merrill Lynch, Winchester Bowring and Brinks Mat all had teams in the competition. Around the room we had t.v. monitors showing the pool matches that were filmed by a rotating video camera suspended from the ceiling. It was a great pub with fantastic customers, especially those who participated in the 24 hour pool marathon from 9.00 p.m. Friday to 9.00 p.m. Saturday during one Summer in the mid-eighties. Hope someone reads this who was a customer from that time and if you are I say thank you for being part of a pub that became a legend in its own lunchtime.

The Sir Paul Pindar, Bishopsgate

I am so sorry to read some of the comments about the current Sir Paul Pindar pub. The original was a really great pub but was demolished in 1990. From 1979 to 1990 we served quality I.P.A. and Bass as we were Charrington Tenants. We also served doorstep sandwiches and the most popular filling was Salt Beef. Does any remember the original pub from that period? If you do please let me know.
