The Admiral Rodney, Calverton

We have eaten at the Admiral Rodney before and enjoyed an excellent meal, however, today we booked a table to celebrate a 96th birthday and have to say we were bitterly disappointed.

After telling us what a successful jubilee he'd had the landlord made us shout our order over to the bar because he was too busy planning the next event to take our order properly. The table at which we were seated was sticky and none too clean. Mushy peas served with the fish were almost cold, chips were lukewarm and greasy (served in a posh little basket but rubbish nonetheless). The gammon served with eggs was all too obviously left over from the weekend etc, etc.

Our plates were cleared, neither puddings nor coffees were offered; we paid the bill and left feeling as though we had inconvenienced the landlord and paid a high price for it. Needless to say, the Rodney has lost at least 8 customers today.

Jolly Scotchman, Holdingham

We booked to eat at the Jolly Scotchman on Saturday 20 December to celebrate mum's 83rd birthday. When we arrived I visited the Ladies toilet, it was none too clean and the toilet seat had fallen off.

We were the only diners in the place, and it very soon became obvious why. We ordered haddock, chips and vegetables (scampi was off and most of the other choices on the menu involved cheese which we do not eat). When the meal was served the haddock was of the 'supermarket' variety ie triangular, inferior batter and greasy. The chips were of a cheap and frozen variety, undercooked and the vegetables consisted of CABBAGE!!!!!! and sweet corn.

We were asked whether we would like any sauce, requested Tartare and had 4 plastic pots of tomato ketchup dumped on the table.

The Christmas trimmings around the restaurant had obviously seen many years hard service and the floor under our table was filthy, as was the carpet throughout the Jolly Scotchman.

An experience we will never repeat. Absolutely disgusting and a total waste of money.
