The George Abbot, Guildford

FANTASTIC! On a night when every other pub in central Guildford seemed to have run out of beer and be absolutely dead, this place had atmosphere, plenty of well-kept ales on offer and fine food (try the roast beef wrapped in a huge yorkshire pudding) offerings on 2-for-9 deals (plus a wider menu). It features sport quite heavily, hence much of the trade tonight, but God - at least there's a pub in Guildford that takes pleasure in what it does, does it well, and will still be standing at the other end of the recession!

Auberge, Guildford

Interesting to hear this used to be a car showroom, as it feels like an airport lounge. In a place no one flies to, or ever leaves. How does a place that's always so empty stay open? I've been waiting for it to shut down and re-open as something decent for 2 years. And owners - please note: the chairs are dirty and need replacing; when you do, don't get the same horrible blue. It clashes with the rest of the furniture.
Gave it another try this evening out of Christmas charity - and spent 10 minutes waiting for the lone bar-girl to try to change the Leffe. She couldn't. We left.

The Kings Head, Guildford

This pub is appalling. The furniture is absolutely disgusting - the stains and grime on every single seat and every inch of carpet in the place must date back decades; and don't lean on the tables unless you want your jumper to get stuck and unravel when you lift your arms up. There is apparently a decent range of ales on offer, but the pint of TEA we had was absolutely dead. The lighting is also dreadful - ancient lampshades with energy-saving bulbs sticking over the top everywhere you look so you've got glaring lights in your eyes. You really wouldn't take your mother in here, and you really really wouldn't take anyone you were trying to pull in here. Stay well clear and wait for a refurb. Or a deep clean at the very least.
