Lord's Tavern, St John's Wood

OK, BITE, you can chuck all of the 2004 reviews out of the window.

While the decor didn't exactly give me a sense of the history or cricketing significance of the place, the beer selection was small in quantity but high quality, and the food was out of this world. Prices aren't cheap, but much less than you'd expect, given its location, and very reasonable compared with its local competition.

We went there on a County Championship day which meant that we were probably the only non-cricket players/spectators/pundits in the house, but we felt out of place probably for a maximum of about 30 seconds, until I went up to the bar and was put at my ease by the very friendly and helpful staff. I'll definitely be back.

The burgers, by the way, were top notch.

The Pembroke Castle, Primrose Hill

used to come here regularly in summers gone by, and it was a very pleasant place. not perfect, but not bad. went back there recently however and the new management have made a lot of changes which have made it a place to avoid. the tv in the corner now shows a computer generated aquarium instead of sports. now if that's not a huge waste of electricity i don't know what is. the main problem is the totally unwarranted rudeness dished out by the manager on a routine basis to the customers. it's a shame because the rest of the staff are very pleasant. won't be going back.
